Beer Nuts, or anything bacon. Or, bacon-flavored Beer Nuts. Or, maybe just bacon; I can always forage for nuts. And if I can't, then I'll still have bacon.
I'm thinking that if there is a fresh water source (without it you're in huge trouble anyway), a salty snack would actually be a really good thing to have. The chances of sweating and being sunburned would probably be high and the sodium would be a necessity. (You could be stuck on a lake or lava, so salt water isn't a given).
It is interesting that you lump Triscuits, Wheat Thins & Sun Chips together. I don't think of them as similar things, if you added Fritos to the list it would be every single snack I hate.
@christinerenee What is it about those snacks you hate? Triscuits & Wheat Thins are a bit weak on their own unless they are a special flavor, but not bad tasting by any means.
@christinerenee@dashcloud (I love that I have to change it from @dashbuttevery time) I'm also mostly confused by the hate. Wheat thins are awesome and amazing even plain, dip them in some cream cheese with salsa (or raspberry chipotle) on top and look out. Sun Chips are just straight delicious, though I rarely seek them out I've never had a flavor I didn't like. Triscuits are the worst on their own though, almost no flavor and weird texture.
@dashcloud@JonT It's mostly the texture for them all. Triscuits are especially terrible in the texture department. It's like eating little bundles of hay or something. The others have weird textures to me too, though not as bad. But I will admit I didn't take dip into consideration. Even Triscuits could be OK if the dip is awesome enough.
I think the food that would be most useful for being on a desert island would be GORP. Largely because it's usually composed of raisins and salty peanuts, and some other assorted things. Those two ingredients though would provide some much needed sustenance that most other salty snacks might miss. The M&Ms would be a nice, added bonus.
@kazriko mmm gorp and scroggin, much better words for trail mix. Studentenfutter ("student feed") in Germany Studenterhavre ("student oats", in analogy of horse oats) in Denmark Studentenhaver (id.) in the Netherlands and Flanders Mieszanka studencka ("students' mix") in Poland Studentų maistas ("students' food") in Lithuania Tudengieine (Student snack) in Estonia Diákcsemege ("students' delicacy") in Hungary Študentska hrana ("students' food") in Slovenia Studentski miks ("Student mix") in Serbia Bwyd Dewey ("beloved food") in Wales Agil in Iran (thanks wikipedia)
@thismyusername Lots of countries referring to it as "student" food there. This reminds me. I should grab a bag on my way to work tomorrow. It's a good snack for programming too.
@earlyre Yeah, I have two cans left. I'm trying to have less than one caffeinated thing per week though, At one point I was down to one every 4 months. Lots of early morning meetings did that in though.
I was born without the love of salt gene. It's how my dad used to keep me out of his salted peanuts. He'd salt them more. (Daddy died at 58 - just sayin'.)
@lisaviolet I'm lacking that gene, too... My sodium is always low when I have blood work done. When I'm craving salty potato chips I know I'm in trouble.
@dashcloud Never ate much Chinese food. Maybe once or twice a year, but no more than that. It's not really a favorite, although there are some things I really like.
It's not that I can't or don't eat it, I just don't crave it and would rather not have it at all. I don't cook with salt. That was a problem when I first got married, but we went to Nutrisystem (back when they had walk in clinics) and my husband lost his craving for it. Which was good because I got tired of the comment "needs salt" about my cooking.
I always ordered my margaritas with no salt. The thought of that first sip of margarita through all of that salt just makes me shudder.
Pistachios. Not the red ones cause it takes forever to wash that shit off your lips and fingers. But if I'm stranded on a desert island, I suppose that wouldn't matter. BUT... because I'm all about vanity, not the red ones....
I went with the peanuts. They are a more compete food. I decide to interpret the question as meaning "the only thing you have to eat is "x". You would live longer on peanuts.
@givemeyoursoul If you only have the options on their poll to choose from, then peanuts are definitely the best choice. I still like my choice of gorp/trailmix with peanuts however

@Pavlov ... Beernuts? Is that anything like calf fries..?
@unkabob http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_Nuts
@unkabob She's a real ball buster . . .
@Pavlov ... She should have worked on a higher table. As she bent over, my attention span suddenly became variable (LOL).
@unkabob @Pavlov We call them Rocky Mountain oysters.
Definitely Doritos.
Bacon. Just bacon.
Papadum
Peanuts. They have protein and, with very little effort, can magically transform into a sweet treat of peanut butter.
Olives
@Teripie I can snack on black olives all day.
Does salted chocolate count?
@techdeviant I voted peanuts, but if this is an option I would like to change my vote.
Popcorn.
Or Cheetos.
But really none, unless they come up with a low salt salty snack.
@KDemo This. Salt is a very strong flavor. A tiny but goes a long way.
I was going to ask about salted chocolate caramels. :)
Salted Nut Rolls, gotta love the sweet nugent center. (Yes it's a real candy bar, look it up ya perves!)
@Ayer87 Oh, my. Haven't thought about them in years!
@Ayer87 Is Ted Nugent in there? Not so sweet.
Lays Wavy Roasted Garlic and Sea Salt.
Gotta be plain kettle style chips
Chocolate Salty Balls
@rand3y

If I was stranded on a desert island, I would want to be dead ASAP so I would eat CHEETOS® Crunchy XXTRA FLAMIN' HOT® Cheese Flavored Snacks.
@SSteve The snack that burns twice.
@thismyusername just like wings .... ugh
Hot and spicy Cheez-its!! They're my current food obsession.

@kazriko according to the old internet meme coding requires mountain dew code red.... so grab some of that as well.
@thismyusername !false
@thismyusername I prefer Surge myself to Mt Dew products. Though, these days I usually just drink water.
@kazriko did you know Surge is back! I've only seen it on amazon so far, but if you have prime, it's $14 for a case of 12, 16 oz cans.
@earlyre Yeah, I have two cans left. I'm trying to have less than one caffeinated thing per week though, At one point I was down to one every 4 months. Lots of early morning meetings did that in though.
good chocolate
good vanilla ice cream
good chocolate chip ice cream
Does banh mi count as a salty snack? Om nom nom nom!
Can I cheat and go with pretzel crust pizza, just to make sure I have a ready supply of pizza?
My mom's homemade Chex mix (:
@atravis6 My thoughts exactly. My sister makes me tubs of her Chex Mix every Christmas.
Potato chips NOT made in a microwave.
I'd say corn chips/tortillas. Especially if I could find some salsa.
peanuts quite easily in a survival situation.
French Fries. They are quite possibly my favorite.
Wibs. I wuv wibs
@Jdub do wibs come from pigs and cows?
Spice. I would take lots of spice.
Combos, specifically pepperoni pizza or 7 layer dip flavored.
I was born without the love of salt gene. It's how my dad used to keep me out of his salted peanuts. He'd salt them more. (Daddy died at 58 - just sayin'.)
I'll be making my tater chips without.
@lisaviolet I'm lacking that gene, too... My sodium is always low when I have blood work done. When I'm craving salty potato chips I know I'm in trouble.
@lisaviolet So, did you stay away from Chinese food as well then? MSG usage is down a lot now, but it hasn't always been so I'm curious.
@dashcloud Never ate much Chinese food. Maybe once or twice a year, but no more than that. It's not really a favorite, although there are some things I really like.

@lisaviolet Thanks!
@dashcloud Makes Stuff Good
What salty snacks could I use to build a raft?
@rockblossom - Pretzel logs?
@KDemo Tied together with licorice laces and string cheese?
@rockblossom :) Yes, or fused with pre-chewed bubble gum.
Blue corn tortilla chips
Oklahoma Joes (now Joe's KC) burnt ends or Sonnny's Georgia Style Sliced Pork with mustard based BBQ sauce ... or Pizza (Johnny Jo's)
@unixrab burnt ends from Oklahoma Joe's is my favorite BBQ. Great pick
@Broseph woooooooooooooot! er...uh.. YEAH!
Beef Jerky

I was wondering, does anyone else share my love for double-salt licorice? It's not my favorite snack, but definitely in the top 5.
@cercopithecoid never had it... but now I must.
@cercopithecoid Go easy on it. It can cause serious complications and health issues. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/236780.php
Crap! Unable to sleep so reading the forum at 3:00 am and now this thread has made me hungry.
