Ideal Phone
1What specs would your ideal phone have? For me, these are my musts:
Front facing speakers
Fingerprint sensor
Wireless charging capabilities
IR blaster
At least 32GB of storage or 16 if I have the option to use a micro SD
Sadly though I don’t think i’ll ever get this combination. My current LG G3 only checks 3 of those boxes with the IR, wireless charging, and storage. I love watching videos on my note 10.1 tablet because of the front facing speakers and would love them on my phone. I guess fingerprint sensor would just be a nice to have since i’ve never had one before (except for my work laptop). I don’t heavily use the IR blaster, but I use it enough that I would miss it a ton if I didn’t have it.

Do non-iOS phones have user profiles? I would love to be able to have different profile options on my phone.
I use my phone all the time at work, and rather not mix work pics with non-work pics.
@conandlibrarian yes. Android phones that are like version 4.2 or greater will have a profile or account feature on it. You may need to create separate google accounts for personal/work to have all the features under each profile. I think you can share apps across profiles on the same device if you purchase an app… It will store separate app data for each user, but I don’t know about paid apps. (I don’t buy many apps)
@conandlibrarian This is for nexus phones but should apply to many other phones: https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2865483?hl=en
64GB storage would be my minimum instead of 32.
Waterproof
Replaceable battery
64 storage
Floating would be nice too
Oh and good camera
@CaptAmehrican If you need it to float you really shouldn’t be using your phone! (Unless you are in the Deadliest Catch)
@ELUNO I spend at least half my awake hours on the water. Yes waterproofing and floating would be nice.
makes phone calls and doesn’t cost more than my 55’’ tv.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@username i bought this for $6 as a backup
@communist nice. I’m kind of disappointed at general availability of a decent rugged phone. one or two come along every few years but with horrible reviews. you’d think there would be a larger market.
@username there is the galaxy s active series buts thats on att only(with an s5 version for sprint as well)
on verizon you got the droid force with Shattersheild display(its 4 layers of plastic instead of glass so the screen cant shatter even if you drop it on concrete. )
other than those phones
there is the keocera phones that are waterproof and android.
Fuck fingerprint sensors, and fuck facial recognition too while we’re at it.
Not only are they both easily fooled / bypassed, but you can be legally compelled to provide your fingerprint (or your face) to unlock a device (via warrant). IF LE doesn’t have time for a warrant and they claim exigent circumstances, they’ll just hold you down and unlock the phone or the computer. Sure, whatever they find may be eventually thrown out as a warrantless search - but they’ll act on it anyway and the damage they inflict probably cannot be undone. If you’re a business or individual with sensitive information on a device, you need to consider this . . .
Not to mention that bad actors have been known to occasionally just flat out cut off your fucking finger to unlock a device, or knock you out to point your face at the camera (you’ll be lucky to wake up from a hit on the back of the head like that - real life isn’t Hollywood).
Encrypt your devices and use other strong credentials.
@Pavlov
What are you saying here? Are you saying that if I get myself killed or something I can’t just hire JJ Abrams and reboot the franchise? What about lens flare? Won’t that save me? Huh.
/giphy lens flare reboot
@Pavlov The freakin iPhone bio scanner won’t unlock for ME 9 times in 10. Good luck to the moron who diced off my digits trying to access Flappy Bird and my Jethro Tull collection.
My ideal phone would have a removable SD card and removable battery, but still be very thin and lightweight. The FM chip could be activated. The built-in speaker(s) would have good sound quality. It would not come with any bloatware, or it could be easily uninstalled without having to root the phone. And, most importantly, the exterior would be purple.
