Iced or Cold Brew
11So, I suspect some of us that weren’t able to take the additional day off for today are or on their way to work. You’re about to hit that coffee machine or your local spot hard after yesterday’s festivities.
Are you an iced or a cold brew person? What is the difference even? Luckily, I found an article that can help us understand:

Does it really matter? It’s morning.
https://shirt.woot.com/offers/catffeine
I’m a cup a day coffee person so cold brewing is easiest since it lasts a few days. Then I put it in the microwave because air conditioning exists.
I’m still drinking Dunkin Donuts pumpkin spice because it was 80% off.
If it’s cold and caffeinated - I’ll have two, please!
neither! Water or hot tea in the morning
Cold and black, like my heart.
@therealjrn
Your heart wants to be burnt orange.
Just give yourself a chance. Instant Bliss!

@f00l Lady, you must be burnt smooth up.
@f00l @therealjrn is that a nose/mouth with a handlebar mustache?
@chienfou @f00l If yer talkin’ Texas, then yeah, it’s a big mouth, because them there be runnin’ it all the time when they try to dis our mother’s boys playing for Oklahoma.
God I miss caffeine. I was an iced coffee drinker a few years ago before I lost the ability to tolerate the sweet glory that is caffeine.
@sarahjewel Well, you still have methamphetamine, right?
@sarahjewel I’m to the point where I have to quit caffeine by mid afternoon. Before long I’ll be eating dinner at the 5 pm early bird special.
@sammydog01 @sarahjewel
Ouch!
Can’t live without it.
@sammydog01 @sarahjewel
Oh what the hell… it’s 5 o’clock somewhere
Coffee in just about any form is enjoyable for me. There are so many varieties of just iced coffee and cold brew… here is a rough list of my preferences:
@mschuette I’m going to have to try nitro cold brew this weekend. I usually go for the lattes myself. Coffee and milk, perfect.
@mschuette
This is a good list:
Basically, any good cold coffee. Milk or almond milk or cream or whatever is an ok additive.
A little cinnamon or nutmeg is ok (not the flavoring. The spice itself.)
V light use of Sugar/sweetener if you must.
Nothing else please!!!
I do like the trad iced coffee at Vietnamese places.
Please let otherwise-fine cold coffee not be so glopped up with syrups and whipped creams and crazy flavorings that it starts to resemble a DQ “mix-in” item or a milkshake.
As for frapps:.
Sure, they taste great, from a “kiddie dessert perspective”… If you are cool with 3 days worth of caloric intake (mostly sugary stuff) in one afternoon’s drink.

@f00l Forgot about Vietnamese iced coffee. That’s a solid 2nd or 3rd on that list. Let us ice the coffees and then drink the coffees. Huzzah!
Iced. Favorite: Venti caramel frap, please. Yes, I want the whip cream. If I pay 5 bucks, I want the topping.
Why do I pay 5 bucks for coffee?
@PlutoIsAPlanet
@PlutoIsAPlanet I mean, how many people say no to the whipped cream? Stop asking already.
@PlutoIsAPlanet @sammydog01 I do whipped cream during Christmas time on the mocha mint latte.
@PlutoIsAPlanet @sammydog01 @Targaryen exactly. I’m a mocha-once-a-year kind of fella w.r.t. gratuitous sugar in my coffee.
Now excuse me for a sec, I need to go to kitchen for another brownie. (I mean…if I go to sleep now they’re just gonna go cold, and that would be a waste.)
@PlutoIsAPlanet that’s not a coffee. It’s a milkshake. But it’s ok. I enjoy those milkshakes too!
Neither. Coffee = bleh.
@cinoclav
You poor thing.
I blame you for your suffering.
@f00l I only suffer when I drink it. I’ll take a cup of tea any day.
@cinoclav @f00l So you must be loving the tea content lately.
@f00l @Targaryen Following it for recommendations!
Brewing my first pot of cold brew…will get back to you on this.
@mikibell I hope so I’m genuinely curious.
@mikibell @Targaryen I tried Grady’s cold brew (it comes in the mail via a “kit”, but not the kind of kit that’s a baby fox), and it was fine. I liked the convenience.
@Targaryen soooo… I only tried cold brew because morningsave sent me this “deal” on a coffee brewer, which turned out to be sold out! Then I heard it was easier on the stomach, and read a science article that says there is no truth on the lower acidity. I am no coffee aficionado.
I bought this coffee from amazon :
https://www.amazon.com/Stone-Street-Coffee-Colombian-Coarsely/dp/B01HFK955I/ref=pd_gwm_rp_1?pf_rd_s=grid-2&pf_rd_t=Gateway&pf_rd_i=mobile&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pd_rd_wg=RKmcI&pd_rd_r=7GY98S3V84YD2PV2Z7V9&pd_rd_w=qB9ck&pf_rd_r=VFBDYA2V3Z1AMCT8AKX6&pf_rd_p=a53a4f91-7287-42f1-a44f-3b58703bb31b&pd_rd_i=B01HFK955I
without noticing it is dark roast, I am a hazelnut mild roast type of coffee drinker
I also read that cold brew coffee was more concentrated than hot brew. I may have cut my coffee with twice as much milk as normal, but I didn’t add any sugar.
With all that said, my drink was comparable to a starbuck’s ice coffee, minus the ice.
I did enjoy the cup, better than ice coffee. The fact that it will last a week or so is not half bad. I am not sure I would pay extra for a cold brew if I were purchasing it out. I don’t know about the belly impacts yet. So, yeah, cold brew over ice coffee.
Cold brew is good and consistent and often easier on the stomach than iced coffee.
Iced coffee, brewed and poured over ice is dilute and meh.
So if you have an awesome, say fruity Ethiopian, you make a batch and let it cool and make ice cubes. Then you make the next and pour it over the ice cubes made from the same coffee.
Beats cold brew all the time
But is a lot of work
Black Blood of the Earth if I have to pick though
LEGOS! EGGOS! STRATEGO! AWESOME!
@Cerridwyn Um…”black blood of the earth” is the most metal thing I’ve heard all week, and I’ve been listening to Mick Gordon’s Doom soundtrack a lot this week.

@UncleVinny @Targaryen
google it
try it
I dare you
@Cerridwyn @Targaryen @UncleVinny Up to 40x times the caffeine? Ok, I’m picking up a bottle if I can find one.
/giphy caffeine
@stolicat @Targaryen @UncleVinny
have to order it
@Cerridwyn @UncleVinny But I want to sleep sometime that week.
@Targaryen @UncleVinny
sleep is overrated
personally I prefer an
/giphy ICE COLD BREW
The bagel place around the corner has nitro cold brew that’s intense, chocolatey, and amazing. Too many people with the day off today though, the line was to the door so I went without.
Cold Brew, the Real Iced Coffee.
Drinking the stuff in New Orleans since the 80s. Lived a block away from Community Coffee’s roasting warehouse. Nectar of the gods, after Belgian beer.
@mike808 I’ve had the Cafe Du Monde coffee. Is this comparable or is one better than the other?
@Targaryen CDM is for tourists mainly, and hardcore chicory lovers. Community is the local choice in stores, they own the CC’s cafes you see around town. PJs is the OG cafe chain. Generally, coffee in NO is as common as in Seattle. It’s great that I can get Community nationwide and in the different roasts now. For flavored, my go to is the King Cake or pecan. Look for the samplers, it’s a commitment to get a pound of flavored for me.
For making your own cold brew, you can be flexible on beans/cost. It is nowhere near as bitter (no heat to release the bitterness), and why Starbucks burnt over-roasting turns out decent when they make it. If you grind whole beans, use a very coarse grind.
@mike808 @Targaryen
Blue Bottle out of SF makes a pretty fine NOLA coffee for not being in NOLA
There is even a distillery up that way that makes it into a liqueur
@Cerridwyn @Targaryen
Sources for the real deal outside of NO:

And I see that Community is getting into the game too.
Thai iced coffee.
/image Thai iced coffee 5
@eonfifty Never had Thai iced coffee. I have had the ice tea. That’s tasty.
@eonfifty @Targaryen a close relative is the Vietnamese iced coffee. Intensely good!
@eonfifty @UncleVinny Story time, a Filipino friend of mine dropped off a bottle of Vietnamese coffee with almost no translation after he’d heard I’d never had one. So, a few days later I cracked it open and with some difficulty drank the entire container saying to myself “man, Vietnamese coffee is almost like a thin milkshake consistency.” As the ultimate power of the gods flowed through my veins and I felt like I could fly or maybe karate kick through a brick wall I thought “wow this is strong stuff” and read the front of the bottle and tiny tiny English print I saw -concentrate- so I’m familiar with Vietnamese coffee now haha.
@eonfifty @Targaryen “the elixir of life”, we called it, back when we were still in custody. For more on these fervid topics, see @cerridwyn’s discussion above of “the black blood of the earth”.
@Targaryen
So could you?
I don’t mind iced coffee sometimes but in general I drink hot black coffee in the summer just like the rest of the year because I’m an absolute madman.
I prefer hot coffee. But I switch to the less-acidic cold brew coffee on those times when I get hyper-acidic.
Hot coffee… only.
I bought a cold brew setup from meh a while back and experimented with several batches before I came to the conclusion that I prefer a little acid and bitterness in my coffee. The cold brew just tasted too bland to me. I gave the hardware to my son, but I think he eventually came to the same point.
So it’s hand ground beans and the Aeropress for me, one cup at a time.
@macromeh
you would like iced coffee better, because it is just hot brew over ice. (make coffee ice to prevent dilution
My favorite bottled cold brew when you want something smooth or if coffee’s stomach reaction gets to you comes from: http://koffeereinvented.com/ They sell it at this little healthy market next to where I work.
My next favorite is Secret Squirrel - the black (from same place actually, but I’ve seen it more places, including target.
https://www.squirrelbrew.com/
I can’t do squirrel at night, it has just too much caffiene, but before 5…
/
@Cerridwyn Oh man, Secret Squirrel is damn good stuff. A little pricey (in the Seattle burbs anyway), but one of the best packaged coffees I know of.
@mschuette
/
Another fave. Carried by Target.
About three weeks ago I built a nitro kegerator for serving cold brew coffee in my workplace. We’re still playing with roasts, but it’s delicious. Watching the delightful cascade followed by a mule-kick of caffeine is a pleasant start to my office mornings.
