I turn 45 in two weeks. Looking for ideas to celebrate.
2I am hoping to be able to take my SO and I whale watching. But being 3 years and 3 months into this work injury, no more disablity payments business means that money is super tight. I don’t drink, I live in inland Southern California. I am (was? Idfk) a special ed teacher and I live with an elementary school library media assistant (the schools librarian.) We are nerds.
Ideas? You guys always seem to have cool ideas.
Thanks in advance!

Star Trek TNG marathon
@medz The Expanse marathon!
@medz Awesome idea, thank you!
POPSOCKETS! ROAD ROCKETS! SONNY CROCKETT! AWESOME!
@ChompyGator
Sleep in.
@Stumpy91 That is happening for sure!
Drive out to the beach.

@djslack this is making me giggle like a toddler
@djslack I grew up at the beach, and now that it takes me two hours to get there, I miss it more than anything! We may have to do a tv marathon at the beach with yummy cake! This day is shaping up. Thank you!
@ChompyGator @djslack Wait a sec, do you live in… West Covina?
@djslack @mossygreen No, I’m in the Central valley.
Is there a makerspace nearby? Or do the municipal/county libraries there offer access to (f.ex) 3D printers? Take a class and make some cool things.
Do any of the libraries loan out astronomy equipment/telescopes? Or do you have a telescope or even just decent binoculars? Get a ways out of town some night with a sky atlas and look at the stars, ID the planets, see if you can spot a satellite.
@duodec Those are all great ideas, thank you. I live in a terrible place that has horrid adult literacy and is seriously considering closing the libraries, so no real money has been put into them in years. It’s so sad.
But I do have friends with those things, so I think I can still swing one or two
@ChompyGator @duodec
Have a get together to make a Little Free Library. Basically a DIY honor system public library in a public place or on a curb for easy access. And then fill it with books.
@ChompyGator @duodec Put “sky map” on your phone before you head out. Line up your phone with the part of the sky you are looking at and it IDs all those little bits of light you can see.
Best “real” book of star constellations IMHO is by H L Rey (yep the Ccurious George author)
Drive out to Torrey Pines (sp?) and just enjoy a sunset and each other’s company with some guilt-free (but modest) take out of your choice. Hopefully you’re close enough to make it an easy drive.
@zinimusprime I’m not sure what/where that is, but will look into it. Thank you!

@ChompyGator The view from the cliffs is awesome
MEALS! DEALS! EELS! AWESOME!
@zinimusprime, I live right by there, and concur. (Feel free to stop by and buy me a beer )
Of course, anywhere also the SoCal coast is pretty awesome to catch a sunset. Or just walk along the beach.
LEGOS! EGGOS! STRATEGO! AWESOME!
@haydesigner if I lived not on the east coast, I would. I was there for a business trip over 10 years ago and I still remember it like its was yesterday.
@haydesigner @zinimusprime I usually go home to Ventura, but I definitely need to Branch out coastal visit wise. When I do make it there, I’d be excited to buy you a beer.
@haydesigner @zinimusprime the pics on the Google link look like that places is just perfect. In a stunning display of irony, after 10 years + of trying to get SD Comic Con Tix, I finally did get them this year for the 2020 con. I have to find a way to get the money for a place to stay, and more importantly to kennel my dogs. IF I can get that together, I will totally be spending an extra day, if I can swing it, there for sure! And you’re in for the beer.
I also have a nephew I. s for Marine bct, or whatever they call the first phase in the Marines, so I might get there before July.
Have you considered a birthday vasectomy?
@Limewater don’t think she has them parts… Just guessing…
@Limewater I would, but yeah, missing the correct parts for that. I play video games with a group of friends, and one summer all 4 of the guys I regularly play with had vasectomies. It was amazing because we had a week of just playing all day.
@ChompyGator I don’t understand all these guys taking a whole week off for a vasectomy.
I have young kids. I had mine on a Friday morning and took the day off, and didn’t have to help with the kids too much on Saturday, but by Sunday I really had to pitch in again, and Monday morning I was back at work.
@Limewater depends on the type of work, I suppose. A desk job would be pretty easy to go back to, my manual labor jobs would only exacerbate things. I think I had 3 days counting the weekend, but I just sit or stand in front of a screen all day.
@medz Yeah, that’s true. I’m either in front of a computer or in front of a workbench most of the time. I think I took a week or two off from weightlifting. I wouldn’t have wanted to go back to something involving heavy lifting or climbing right afterwards.
@Limewater @medz I had 2 days off before my wife started giving me the “really?” look. lol
@Limewater @zinimusprime Buddy of mine was doing light yard work the following day…maybe he had better pain killers…
@medz @zinimusprime I didn’t take pain killers after the first day. I don’t trust them. I want to feel it if I’m hurting myself.
All of those ads for Aleve and Tylenol and Advil or whatever featuring people taking them before playing sports or exercising tick me off. Unless you’re a pro athlete before a competition, that’s a very bad idea.
@Limewater in middle school, I had Osgood-Schlatter disease something fierce. Knees were so painful, I could not participate in track meets without taking at least four 200mg ibuprofen. So, I can see how those ads would be effective marketing.
@medz I had Osgood-Schlatter in one knee when I was younger. I was able to manage it with stretching.
I’m lucky, though, because my father was a professor of Kinesiology, so he knew a lot about this sort of thing.
@Limewater Thanks. That makes me feel better… I don’t recall our small town doctor ever telling me to stretch them. (beyond normal stretches coaches had us do)
@Limewater @medz I get bad migraines and recently have gotten back into running, specifically run-commuting. At the beginning I was getting bad shin splints. One day I had an especially bad headache and had taken about 16 ibuprofen to make it finally go away. I had also done some really good stretching after my morning commute. On my run home, I was feeling amazing and thought it must’ve been all that good stretching I did, until I remembered that I had consumed enough ibuprofen to kill a household pet.
The lesson? I love ibuprofen.
@medz @zinimusprime I’ve had shin splints, too, though not in many years.
For shin splints, you need the opposite of stretching. You need
a) to take a bit of a break from running, or at least stick to soft surfaces if you can
and
b) to do weighted toe raises.
I’m not finding a great description online. You want to be able to sit on something with your feed dangling off with plenty of clearance. Maybe your kitchen counter. Wear your shoes. Get a bucket you can hang over the top of the toes of your shoes.
Now, try to raise the toe/ball end of your foot. You’ll feel the muscles contracting on either side of your shin bone.
Add a little weight to your bucket and do, like 3 sets of 15 reps per foot. Try this three times per week. It should burn pretty good to get to 15 reps. As it gets easier, add a little weight to your bucket.
I’m not a professional, but I don’t know who the heck has time to go consult with their doctor for every little thing. And I expect your doctor has more important things going on anyway. And would probably just refer you to a physical therapist who would tell you what I’m telling you.
@Limewater @medz Yeah, I do calf raises and rolling along with stretching. Thanks for the advice!!!
@Limewater @medz @zinimusprime Since I was hit in the head by a student a little over 3 years ago, I have suffered from daily debilitating awful headaches. The last time I went to the ER for it, A- it was scary because even the morphine they administered did not stop the headache, but B- they told me to take 2 benedryi when I take my migraine meds. It has really helped me, but of course you should always check with your health provider.
@medz @zinimusprime Calf raises are completely different than the exercise I described. They are a complementary movement that won’t do much of anything for your shin splints.
Though it sounds like they might have gone away on their own at this point anyway.
A few friends over. Have everyone bring 1 mystery ingredient. Everyone puts their names into a hat. Divide into 2 teams by you and your partner each picking teams. Each team gets the mystery ingredients the other team brought. Both teams must now in 1 hour make a dish or dishes containing the mystery items. May put from pantry basics as well
Basically one of those chef challenge games at home.
@CaptAmehrican That is an awesome idea! If not on my birthday, we will the next day for New year’s eve!
POPSOCKETS! ROAD ROCKETS! SONNY CROCKETT! AWESOME!
Nerds?
Do you game? just do media? read?
Get a bottle of your favorite whatever it is (or even a pot of coffee). Weather’s not been super nice most places lately, so do you have a fireplace and can you use it?
I recommend a bed, music, food, wine/coffee/whiskey, and your favorite nerd activities.
One thing that can be a bit silly romantic is a tray of finger foods and a book. You cannot feed yourself, the other person must feed you, alternate reading aloud chapters of the book, and oh, you can’t clean your own fingers either
Enjoying a day is what you make of it.
Just enjoy being alive.
(I’m snarking a bit, but also serious a bit.)
@haydesigner Yep, that’s the plan. I get stuck in a rut sometimes and in order to get out of it I was curious what other mehtizens might suggest. It’s been very awesome, and I am thankful to be part of this community.
POPSOCKETS! SPA KITS! POLLY POCKETS! AWESOME!

@daveinwarsh I picked this up at my local bookstore, it’s pretty cool- https://www.russosbooks.com/book/9781632171740
Just kidding. Life is great.

Move from California, as it’s too expensive to live there. When my son lived out there I couldn’t believe a fixer up home was 400k and up! He couldn’t afford to buy a home there so he moved back to Texas (thankfully). Anyways, if you move to a state where it’s cheaper to live, then you’ll have extra money to do something you really want to do on your birthday ——you could take the extra money you save on expenses and go someplace special on vacation.
@AttyVette Unfortunately, what little money I do get is tied to me living in California.
