I made a thing (DIY Wireless Car Charger)
14Here's how I spent my Friday morning.

TL;DR/Click:
I made a wireless quick-charge car dock for my new Galaxy S7 Edge. It was fun.

Neat. Do you really get a "Quick charge" from the cigarette lighter power source?
Edit: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00LJT2EPK
that thing seems pricey, but worth it?
@medz I'll blame you if @ACraigL doesn't....
@medz $12 is pricy? But yeah, phone reports fast charge is enabled when it's docked.
@medz $12 charger for your $700 smartphone is pricey?
@jbartus @ACraigL Yeah... all my car chargers are really cheapo things. I don't use it as much in the car like ACraigL does, so it's really just for emergencies. Plus, both our vehicles have USB ports that'll charge, so all we need is a cable. My home chargers are either power banks or my fancy USB hub smart charger thing that has like 8 USB cords plugged into it. USB cords are REALLY cheap, so I guess anything would be "pricey" to me.
@medz if you buy 'pricey' car chargers you'll probably find that they hold up better and you replace them yet. My mom keeps buying what I like to call 'gas station specials' and has gone through like 6 of them in the time since I bought my current Anker 2-port smart charger.
@jbartus @medz That and the quick charge versions are definitely getting premium value in the market. There's probably like an extra diode or wire or something driving up the cost. Or something.
@jbartus that should have said 'replace them less'
@ACraigL it's actually a chip from Qualcomm that makes it work. They've got 3.0 versions now FYI
@jbartus I know. I was just being 'meh' about it. Despite the Galaxy Edge being a really new phone it still uses the 2.0 version. Otherwise I would have (cover @medz eyes) spent EVEN MORE on a 3.0 adapter.
Oops, I read the title and thought you made something that could supercharge a Tesla from 200 feet away.
Still cool though!
@awk That would be cool. ACraigL Musk. Sweet.
That is a cool idea. I would do it if my phone had fast charging. Maybe next time I upgrade...
@hallmike This one might work for you now. I had it before but took on the project for fast charging.

It comes in desktop and vent mounting options.
@ACraigL I looked at that one but I don't like that it doesn't have a support on the bottom. I prefer to put my phone in loosely so I can get it out quickly without having to re-adjust the tension arms every time.
@hallmike Totally get it. I'm not thrilled with the time it takes to get my phone into the custom dock (which is really like a few seconds and way better than plugging in a cable), but I really like that it fast charges. Removing it is super-quick though, literally a grab-and-go.
I'm constantly on the lookout for alternate ways of mounting this thing. If I come up with anything else, I'll post back.
Here's one has fast charging, and is a more traditional holder:

The iOttie One-touch models may interest you, but they don't charge, just hold.

@ACraigL I added the first one to my cart - thanks! I also found an iOttie that charges: http://www.amazon.com/iOttie-HLCRIO132-Wireless-Standard-Charger/dp/B00UXS7958/ref=pd_cp_107_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0P87TR6SC2TZX2GPWAJE
@hallmike Thanks for the link. I saw that one and it's not fast charge, unfortunately. Otherwise I might have gone for it. But maybe not even then because I think it's so fun to build a solution myself.
There are so many brands of car charger for us, which one is better to me? I have no answers. Just listen to friend recommends, I bought an 400 watt power inverter from Bestek. I learned how to SPAM YOUR FORUM WITH USELESS SHIT from its guide. Maybe you can catch more detail functions about this tool on its official site - Bestekmall. Good luck to you.
