So for anyone with a Sphero BB-8 out there I watched some teardowns and learned that his head is controlled by two magnets with opposite polarity. I found some Neomymium magnets at Home Depot (12 for $4) and made BB-8 a new head- it faces forward so Santa is always going in the right direction. I would post a video but I need another phone for that and I’m not sure if anyone really wants to see it.
Great Job!!! I love it. You will have to make a variety of holiday heads now. There is a bad joke in here somewhere, but I am staying away from it since I am full of good cheer
I want to see if you can make a BB-8 head of Muppet.
This would be awesome!
@Pony As an aside, and please don’t directly answer this - I’d rather use my imagination, what series of events led to you having, as you described them, “some itty bitty Santa hats”…?
@shahnm It’s a sure thing that your imagination will provide a much better story. But putting them on random things around the house at Christmas has been tradition for me for a number of years now.
Someone put a smartwatch into a BB-8 head to make him talk and I though I would try the same thing with a bluetooth speaker fidget spinner. There’s a little receiver and speaker in there, right? There are indeed but they are imbedded into a circuit board shaped like a spinner. So I made a little ugly tree and hoped to make it play carols. It appears on my bluetooth list but won’t connect. I probably fried it with hot plastic. Or maybe it’s the neodimium magnets next to the board? Oh well.
@sammydog01 watching again where it smashes the camera, I got a better view of the LEDs. Were those the ones from the fidget spinner? Did they stay attached or did you have to resolder them?

In other words, I have a new hobby!
Neomymium? You mean NEOFANTASTIC!!!
Fancy!
@therealjrn There was supposed to be a D in there.
Glorious!
Turns out BB-8 does animations in his cradle without the app open so here’s a video clip.
A - MAZ - ING!
@sammydog01, that is so cool! Apparently there is no limit to your skills and imagination.
@sammydog01 The term “hack” doesn’t quite do this justice! It needs a name – HackB-8? SantaB-8? ElfB-8?
@mehcuda67 @sammydog01 SantaB-great
That’s awesome!!!

@mfladd I’m pretty sure I couldn’t do that precious ball of fluff justice but I may try.
@sammydog01 Yes!!!
@mfladd @sammydog01
Then don’t forget the magnets!
That’s awesome. I have some itty bitty Santa hats- I should stick one on my BB8’s head.

@shahnm
@Pony @shahnm
that is seriously awesome
@Pony @shahnm I have a santa hat for my gargoyle but don’t know where it is.
I took a video of him patrolling.
I guess I should use my phone sideways.
@sammydog01 looks like he’s been into the eggnog …
I also made this horrendous thing.

@sammydog01 you forgot to turn the phone.
It’s kinda creepy. Don’t know why. Very creative though.
@RiotDemon It’s coming to get you Barbara.
@sammydog01 stop it!
@RiotDemon I got the speaker working. Jingle Bells or horror movie music? I’ll decide when it’s charged up.
@sammydog01 I’m excited.
@RiotDemon @sammydog01 I wait with bated breath. I love the holiday-tree-bot.

There are more combos but I’ll stop now.
The speaker cuts off after a few seconds. Oh well.
@sammydog01 That’s awesome. The possibilities are endless!
@sammydog01 what a cute drunken tree!
I love the shot at the end where Drunken Tree comes in for it’s extreme closeup!
I laughed, I cried, it was a real emotional roller coaster.
Those are truly awesome. Fantastic creativity @sammydog01!
I made a special one for @riotdemon but Youtube blocked it for music copyright infringement. Damn, they’re good.
I can see it now. Maybe they decided it sucked and let it slide?
/reported
@sammydog01 haha, smash!
I wonder if they let it through since you’re not trying to monetize the video? Not sure. The system is broken.
Thanks for the video!

@ruouttaurmind @sammydog01 @RiotDemon Go home, Christmas tree, you’re drunk. lol

@RiotDemon Everything was attached when I pried the board out of the spinner, so bonus lights.

@sammydog01 it didn’t look like all that stuff was attached. Nice work.
