I had a night blooming cereus at one time. It only blooms at night then the bloom dies in the morning. I set up a time lapse camera to film it and caught the bloom process once, but can’t remember where I stored that file! Smelled amazing as well.

“CO native, the cold hardy lace cactus (echinocereus reichenbachii.) What even IS that little green doohickey in there with the stamens?”
@G1@Kyeh Not an expert just a big fan. If you want experts head over to the cactus subReddit but I warn you, all the amazing pics can keep you there for hours.
Wait for it!!
BAM!!
@yakkoTDI oh that is beautiful
Wow - spectacular!
@Kyeh That is all on one day. The downside is that it takes almost 2 months for the buds to from and bloom.
I need a wider pot for these as that would allow for more plants and thus more flowers at once. This pot is about 12 inches wide.
@yakkoTDI So you can’t leave town when those buds show up for fear you’ll miss that one day!
@Kyeh Even worse are these from my friend’s cactus I am babysitting. Also from last year.
These look good enough to eat. (I wish I could make chicken of the forest – a type of succulent mushroom.)
How long do the flowers last once they open??

@chienfou The two I have posted last about 2 to 3 days.
I have two others that have bloomed for the first time this year. One lasts about a day and a half and the other seems to last about 5 days.
Smaller flowers last longer and can bloom multiple times per year.

@Kyeh That’s a nice one. It also reminds me I need to upload more pictures. I will try to get at least one more post up by the weekend.
@Kyeh @yakkoTDI So, what the heck IS the little green dohickey in there?
@G1 @yakkoTDI Well, I assume it’s part of the cactus but yakko is the expert - do you know?

@G1 @Kyeh @yakkoTDI
Basic plant biology - it’s the pistil surrounded by stamens.
@G1 @rockblossom @yakkoTDI Yeah, I kind of figured and so did the OP - it’s just weird-looking, not nice and neat like the one in your photo.
Wow. What a bunch of pricks in here!
I took this photo in 2016 and it hasn’t bloomed again since.
@cengland0 I got one that looks like that except your flowers are bigger.
And this aloe plant bloomed in 2019 and not again since.
