My trunk is my overflow closet. Whenever stuff gets cleaned out of the house it goes in my trunk. The premise is that it’s heading over to Good Will for donation. The reality is, I’m not 100% ready to get rid of it all even though I have been directed to do so. The first flat tire on the freeway will end this stupid process.

I learned the hard way on a return trip from 3 weeks overseas that my RAV does not have a keyhole in the tailgate. The battery had run down in the car so I couldn’t get in without the use of the physical key in the driver’s door … then we had to crawl through the vehicle to reach under the floorboard to get my jump starter kit out. Of course it lifts from the tailgate side so it was a real PITA to do. Thankfully there was nothing sitting on the floorboard! That jump starter pack now lives under the front seat.
On trips when we packed the back end and it’s to the ceiling I’m always worried that I’ll have to make a stop and get something out of that space underneath. The thought of having this giant mound of crap outside my vehicle while I rummage around under the floorboards is frightening.
I have a RAV4 so technically no trunk. The under floorboard storage space is pretty organized including a jump starter battery pack, battery powered tire inflator, basic tool kits, a sweater, tarp, and even a half gallon jug in case I get stranded in stopped interstate traffic for an extended amount of time and have to pee. The space above the floorboard is clear of anything except for a large insulated grocery bag with some additional reusable totes tucked into it, for trips to Aldi, Sam’s, etc. Will occasionally keep an empty wine box back (with the insert) there to store bottles in while we are shopping, as needed. While the back end of the RAV is spacious and practical, I truly miss the (more) utilitarian space of my old Vibe .

I thought you said the jug in your trunk was half empty, not that it was a half gallon, so I was curious what substance was in it.
@chienfou@kittykat9180 Those jugs for use in emergencies are called “Trucker Bombs” At least that’s we called them on the Adopt a Highway cleanup crew. Surprising what you find alongside the highway. And there are a lot of Trucker Bombs out there. Absolutely disgusting!

Actually, I’m pretty sure I see a lot of bottles full of urine during my walks/runs/rides. I find interesting things around the city, including cash.
People are massive litter bugs. There’s actually a social media account about it for the city of Albuquerque on Instagram and Facebook called Alburquerque is Trash.

Yeah that would be pretty nasty. Not what I’d intended to use mine for. I figured in a pinch I would use it, cap it, and then throw it away at my first opportunity. Seems like maybe a better alternative than just wandering off the side of the highway and a line of 2000 cars to take a leak
@chienfou@kittykat9180 I can tell that you are not one to discard a Trucker Bomb on the roadside. I would like to believe most truckers dispose of their bombs properly but enough don’t to make it a disgusting mess to pick up on the side of the road.
@macromeh My old Jeep Grand Cherokee which had fallen into disrepair but still works (if I charge the battery) has become a “storage shed” in my driveway. Which I’m sure the neighbors are not happy about. It was going to bring stuff for donation and to a recycling center. Then it became an “oh it’s going to rain, let me put XXX in there to keep it dry.”
@pmarin Yeah, I have an old 90’s vintage Suburban parked in my yard. It runs/drives, but has some issues. I recently inherited my late FIL’s pickup, so the Sub has become pretty much redundant. At some point in the near future the plan is to donate it to whatever charity is willing to come get it.

I don’t have a trunk, but my SUV cargo area is very organized with my expandable organizer.
The only trunks I have are the ones I swim in.

My jumper cables are splayed around it but it’s otherwise empty. So somewhat not at all?
The only thing in it is my folded up organizer. It stays empty, so I can put my golf clubs in when I play.

The trunk of my sedan is clean and free of clutter.
The back of my wife’s SUV… well, that is an entirely different matter…
