@f00l Too bad your not close by. I have tons of Fentynal patches and pain killers on hand. RRMS is a cruel bitch to your nervous system, pain receptors and spine/brain. In the future maybe I can have my robot walk (or drive if they get that far) to you. However, this whole thing brings to mind Terminator and the Will Smith movies so maybe I won’t be owning a robot…hhmmmmm.
I was thinking of fentanyl not in terms of its legit uses; rather in its effects as a social and, moral, biological, and economic poison.
It’s can be so dangerous that police officers who got lightly exposed to fentanyl dust have wound up in the ER for extended stays. It was not certain they would live.
And numerous drug addicted persons have OD’d because they thought it was heroin.
Message to the Govt:
A wall won’t stop it, idgits.
It comes in from China on container ships along with iPads and clothing and kitchen tools.
It comes in from China visa the USPS. (you can mail order it straight to your house).
It can be made locally. In a chem lab.
It’s not grown in the Andes or. something. It’s manufactured in a lab anywhere in the world.
Hey White Hoise!
You know how you have great influence with the Chinese leaders?
How about using that incredible influence you have to get them to squeeze N Korea a bit?
They’re strongly considering taking humans out of the loop on certain weapons systems and allowing an algorithm to make real time kill decisions.
Artificial intelligence is the next arms race and components are already inexpensive enough that within a few years a terrorist organization will be able to release an AI based autonomous weapon that will kill anything that moves and be difficult to stop and there isn’t much of anything to prevent it from happening. .
We’re all gonna fucking die.
We (human beings) have ruined this place since we showed up on the timeline . . . we are the invasive species that will end the world, and the machines will outlive the end of our sun.
@Pavlov The bright side is that it’s unlikely we will actually end the world. Oh sure, we’ll make it uninhabitable for humans (and probably all vertebrates), but the world will heal over the course of a couple hundred thousand years and new forms of life will emerge. They may even last millions of years like the dinosaurs instead of wiping themselves out in some thousands like us.
@Pavlov Don’t worry; folks are so single minded about computer = wintel they’ll probably make all the terminator AIs run microsoft windows without any consideration of the alternatives. The failure modes will be epic thought the damage they do on the way down will likely also be…
If they choose a real OS, then be afraid. Be very afraid.
@Pavlov I’ve used signal processing and machine learning for my algorithms for over 10 years. I have many other parameters to account for and I never completely remove the human component. So far, no one has died (but I agree we’re doomed for other reasons). It’s improved performance, but it’s very expensive to implement AI. Consider the hardware, data costs, data retention and archiving, latency/bandwidth…Oh Fuck! You’re right - it’s expensive to me because I have a $10 million burn rate per year…but governments don’t.
@Pantheist Maybe a few will last for awhile. I doubt it will be much of a life. I wouldn’t want to have to live through any part of it. I hope that my son doesn’t. He’ll hope the same for his children - and so on, and so on - until the conga-line stops, one way or the other.
Yup. Kill a few zillion species, create a few zillion more.
Nothing quite like really understanding what we’re doing to the future, is there?
But it is so very cool all the same.
Hey, someone! Gimme another shipment of antibiotics and hormonal disrupters and perhaps some fentanyl!
Running low here.
@f00l "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should. " Ian Malcolm, Jurassic Park
@moondrake
Story of our species, I fear.
And scientists think more about the future scenarios than just about everyone else does, excepting a few philosophical types.
That also is one of the stories and characteristics of our species, I fear.

Or shut down some mail-order fentanyl labs?
Or offer a few more human rights?
Use those deal-making skills!
youtube about it
too bad they figured it out just after the sold off the robots to softbank
@thismyusername I’ve been there man.
nah this is the future of robots
AI learning to navigate
Part 1
Part 2
End result
Ah, intelligence. It’s the best.
@mfladd
@mfladd
Hello, @mfladd.
I am HAL9000.
Let me sing you a song, @mfladd.

Wow. I just re-read that post and realize I probably need to find a different strain to smoke tonight.
@Pavlov
Fun times, eh?
Technical question here.
Is that correct, given your state of mind and circumstances this evening?
Or should it read;
"We’re all gonna die fucking.
Am asking both factually and philosophically, here.

/image cheer up sucker
@SSteve I’ll bet pockets of vertebrates (maybe even a few humans) last. We’ve known J curves aren’t sustainable for a long time anyway.

Yup. We’re fucked.
@f00l Both, both factually and philosophically.
@Pavlov
Good to know.
Gotta up my game to be a worthy contestant on End Of Humanity Extravaganza.
@SSteve
Sooner, I fear, than many may imagine.
@AccusingEwe Yeah sure, who needs a computer in their home anyway, hell you have to build a mansion to house it.
@Pantheist Maybe a few will last for awhile. I doubt it will be much of a life. I wouldn’t want to have to live through any part of it. I hope that my son doesn’t. He’ll hope the same for his children - and so on, and so on - until the conga-line stops, one way or the other.
/giphy conga line monkey
I was going to change the image to an actual conga line of monkeys, but that is just too good . . .
Anyway, found this:
I’ve seen the future of robots and they are shitty bartenders.
