I really had to search the deepest recesses of my closet for suitable attire when I went back to bury my stepfather at the end of April. Thankfully I was able to locate a pair of dark gray pants that still fit, a decent white dress shirt and a matching charcoal tie. I haven’t had to “dress” in ages. I’m pretty sure this is the only outfit I own now. All my better clothes are much too large for me after my weight loss.
“they ask jidenna ‘why you dressin’ so classy?'
cuz i don’t want my best dressed day in a casket.”
always enjoyed that one, but truthfully i’m with you. and even then, i think i’d just like to be buried in something i actually wore. i mean it’s my funeral, i should get to wear what i want.
@Pantheist Yeah, I actually don’t mind wearing them, and think I look pretty decent in a good suit. I don’t mind wearing ties, either. I feel like I’m in the minority, though. Not that I go out of my way for opportunities to wear them, but I won’t complain. It’s been 9 years since I’ve worn a tie for work, except to shoot a story on the floor of the legislature. Actually, there was that one time I didn’t know I was going to and had to borrow some emergency spares from the press room:
@cinoclav Why yes, yes I am, and a Polo shirt with a clip-on tie. Cargo pants are the preferred choice for TV photographers; they’re ever so useful in the field for carrying all sorts of extras. I would not have worn them had I known I was going to the legislature that day, though, and I would’ve brought a jacket that fit along with a proper tie and a shirt designed to be worn with a tie.
I work from home in tee-shirts or pjs 80% of the time. But about every 2 months i have to go for a few days to a few weeks to the office and wear business casual or actual business.
Then skirts for church or date night, etc, but not even at level id wear to office for business casual (plain tee top often). I have about 5 “very formal” dresses ive worn but its been about 10 years since ive needed one of those. If i need on again and they still fit i can wear one since no one will remember the last time.
Rarely. Last time I wore a dress was at a funeral 7 years ago. I have been to a couple of funerals since where I wear what would be considered a ladies blouse and dress shorts.
I don’t even own formal attire (or business attire) in my size anymore. My last interview I wore nice jeans and a polo shirt. I got the job.
My last first date I went on, I wore jeans and a t-shirt from the Shining. No sense in presenting me as something I’m not. We’re still dating years later.
@RiotDemon same - if a funeral came up that i absolutely couldn’t avoid going to i’d have to go to the store for something. (including shoes.)
i used to have a pair of dress pants and two sweaters (one of which was a hand-me-down from a roommate in college when i got called for jury duty) and a pair of flats, this outfit would basically cover me for most occasions. but a house fire and getting fat put an end those clothing items, and i just never bothered to re-up. i also wear (nice) jeans to job interviews. if it’s a place that wants or expects me to be wearing a business suit or skirt and heels, that’s not a place i want to work honestly. i can’t afford it and i just feel wildly uncomfortable and thus it looks bad/sloppy anyhow. i don’t think i’ll ever lose the feeling that i’m playing dress up in someone else’s clothes when i wear that type of thing.
my day-to-day is a tshirt or tank top and leggings or yoga pants. i’m either working from home or housekeeping, so. actually the past few days it’s been a tank top and no pants, because it’s nearly 100 degrees and i don’t own shorts. i have one plain black v-neck tshirt, one plain black longsleeve cardigan, one plain black shortsleeve cardigan, and one pair of gray-black skinny jeans lacking any embellishment/destruction in the rare cases i need to look particularly benign. but then again, i have blue & green hair and a lip ring (which i always forget is there) so…i’m probably not fooling anyone too much.
going out is all nightclub stuff, one of many cut up tshirts, mini skirt or leggings, several layers of tights/fishnets, boots. jean or pleather jacket if it’s cold. most of my friends also come from this environment so traditional wedding attire is…not necessary. the last wedding i went to was last may, one of my bffs married his wife in the bar they met at. their save the date was a drink coaster and the invitation had tear off drink tickets attached
@RiotDemon this made me laugh as i wasn’t sure if it was sarcasm or not, and i realized both angles would be true. i tend to be either old lady or party monster without much in between, haha
@jerk_nugget It’s not so bad as an adult. Granted, given the choice between “going” and “not going”, I’d pick the latter, but it’s fun seeing all “the kids” get dressed up nice and seeing how they’ve decorated, etc.
I used to sing in a choir where the men wore tuxedos for concert. Mine was a retired theater costume someone gave me. The cummerbund was a piece of black fabric shaped like a cummerbund. The crotch of the pants goes halfway down my thighs and they’re kept up with suspenders. The coat is actually a decent coat but the first time I wore it I put a big rip in the sleeve just below the shoulder. A friend embroidered the rip shut with black thread in the shape of a comet. You can’t see it from more than a couple feet away.
The only other time I’ve worn a tux in the last 15 years was a few years ago at some friends’ 50th wedding anniversary where they asked my wife and me to do a reading.
Last weekend we went to a wedding reception in Virginia City, Nevada where “dressing up” is wearing clean black jeans.
I have been told that in Boulder, CO, these; black t-shirts and sweats, black fleece, black wicking performance wear, black hiking, running, climbing shoes, black ripstop nylon, black yoga and gym clothing wear - are all considered to be suitable formal attire.
Twice per week on a cruise, to weddings, charity auctions and other important non-profit events. Of course I live in the southwest so formal is still pretty relaxed.
Funerals, special church events, …
Basically anytime I want to feel and look good.
/giphy she’s looking good
I’ll keep this one.
Only for funerals.
Only if I have to be a pallbearer.
I should probably buy one of those

@giphy, you ding dong! Those are goats not cats!
@ruouttaurmind Yes, they are goats, but they stole the pajamas from the cats.

Dang! @giphy must be having a good day. Got that one right on the very first try.
When we go to the ballet or theater… When I perform weddings… Funerals, too.
As infrequently as possible.
/giphy How about never?

@ruouttaurmind Congratulations.
On your weight loss, not on the death of your stepfather.
@cengland0 Coincidentally, the amount of weight I lost was very close to what he weighed when he passed.
To a funeral, and I’m the one in the casket.
@daveinwarsh reminds me of a lyric…
“they ask jidenna ‘why you dressin’ so classy?'

Wow, formal Friday is a real thing and apparently it is hip…four years ago.
I wear jeans every weekday. And most weekends unless it is summer.
I dress up a bit for parent teacher meetings, kids’ concerts, and anniversary dinners out… by adding a jacket sans tie.
The only thing that gets a suit on me is immediate family weddings.
Does nobody dress nice for church anymore? That wasn’t even an option in the poll!
@jqubed We all look naked to God.
@jqubed I do! I’m gaining weight, and I’m trying really hard to not buy a new suit and still use the one I bought 10 years ago
@jqubed With one exception, I’ve only been to church for weddings and funerals.
@jqubed Maybe you’re asking the wrong question. You should be asking “Doesn’t anyone go to church anymore?”
@PocketBrain Does that mean he can’t see my funny t-shirt?
@luvche21 Relatable, except I’m trying not to fit back into the suit I wore 3 years ago, but the suits I bought 2 years ago no longer fit.
@cengland0 I thought of this after I posted…
Suit up! For job interviews. Otherwise, no.
Every Sunday for church!
When I have the money for more than the one I got married in I’ll wear them more often. I look damn good in a suit.
@Pantheist Yeah, I actually don’t mind wearing them, and think I look pretty decent in a good suit. I don’t mind wearing ties, either. I feel like I’m in the minority, though. @jqubed Are you wearing -cargo pants- with a jacket and tie???

@RiotDemon is right.

Now stop being serious this second!

Weddings (sometimes), funerals (sometimes), job interviews, and prom (my wife is junior class sponsor, so I “get” to go to prom every year).
I think I can safely say that covers every instance of me wearing a suit in the last 15+ years.
@smyle having to go to prom year after year sounds like what my hell would be. i didn’t even want to go to the one i attended as a senior.
/giphy hork

My office attire is jeans, t-shirt and chucks.
My home attire is jeans, t-shirt and chucks.
My wedding/funeral/interview/fancy date attire is nice-ish pants, a nice-ish top and whatever flats or heels I find that somewhat match.
I don’t even currently own any dresses or skirts. I feel completely awkward anytime I wear one.

Why was “All the time” not an option? I even garden in a button-up and sleep in pinstripe…

@f00l Yeah, basic black. That’s about all you need.
I absolutely love that I wear scrubs every day. It’s like wearing pajamas to work.
