My job also closes at 2PM on Wednesday? and then ostensibly “plays games for morale boosting” 2-3. But my crew conveniently gets “lost” and goes for snacks/drinks instead.
I have off school so I’d like to work extra, but since google gives their real employees pto around holidays it usually means there’s no work available for us lowly subcontractors.
I get Thursday and Friday off. This year, I decided to take Wednesday off as well.
Then the robotics teams at the high school invited me to their annual Thanksgiving party, so I took Monday afternoon off. (I’ve got an important meeting Monday morning, so I cannot just take the whole day off.)
Then the retina of my left eye tore and the first followup visit for the surgery was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, so I’m taking Tuesday afternoon off as well, tho it will count as sick leave rather than vacation. Right now, I’m thinking that I should just cancel my Tuesday morning meeting and blow off that day completely (tho if I do so, I should use a vacation day rather than sick leave)
Re: the eye… the retina in my right eye has torn twice (~2 years ago and earlier this year). No pain, just a shit ton more floaters (suddenly, there are vague shapes like dragons and snakes and globs in my vision). Then about three weeks ago, same thing in my left eye with a fresh new batch of floaters…
The3 whole getting away for it thing has to happen quite a bit more than usual, since I’ve got to use 43 vacation days by August 31 or else I lose them. Of course, this has to happen without doing less work.
@jbrookebarrow And you get to be a real-life superhero. I salute you and those like you–as much of a first responder as police and firefighters. You’re awesome!
@curtw4 Aww. That’s super nice of you but I’m nothing compared to those folks. I don’t run into the burning buildings or step into the line of fire. They’re the heroes. I’m just the boss lady that tells them what to do.
@jbrookebarrow Okay so seriously, why do they not double staff? What the hell when two calls come in at once - one gets to listen to hold music? Is there a roll-over??
@Pavlov Some shifts do have two working but it’d have to get really wild for the one person to not be able to work effectively. We do have a lot of shootings and stabbings around the holidays, though. 'Tis the season
We don’t have hold music, thankfully. The calls will roll over to another agency if too many come in at once, but I’m pretty quick about getting what I need and letting callers go if necessary. I’ll stay on with the person as long as possible most times though. It’s the days leading up to a holiday that are crazy - school’s out, family in town, people are in close quarters drinking and getting fed up with each other - it can get hairy but it’s a rewarding job. Been doing it almost 7yrs now.
I close the store (convenience store / gas station) at noon on Thursday, and stay closed til 6 pm same day so that everyone has a chance to eat dinner, etc.
Doesnt seem like a big deal, but we’re within throwing distance of a shopping mall, and across the street from a Toys-r-us (which likes to open at like 4pm on Thanksgiving these days…)
@KMakato isn’t it depressing that everything is starting to open on thanksgiving? The holiday is becoming more and more about shopping instead of family.
@KMakato I still won’t shop on Thanksgiving but I have stopped railing against the retailers that open on the holiday. I have had too many people tell me they depend on the holiday pay to make ends meet.
@Boiler3k That’s a good point that I’ll always keep in mind now. Some people need the holiday hours/customers just to put food on the table. (I imagine a Bob Cratchit scenario - makes my heart hurt).
@RiotDemon It is, indeed. The thing that gets me is how people will stand outside in the freezing cold (sometimes freezing rain!) just to save a few dollars.
@Boiler3k It’s places like Toys-r-us and other big box stores that are just being greedy. I’d have no problem with smaller retailers trying to get in a few extra sales, but these big companies, especially the ones that are supposed to be supportive of the family environment, pushing the envelope year after year. shrug
I normally get Thursday and then another random day off since I work a normal 40hrs.
This year however, I got terribly sick last Thursday, so now I’ve gotten extra time off that’s rolled over into this week. No need to be bringing sickness to work. Nobody wants this.
@cranky1950 I had to read your comment about three times to make any sense of it. I was reading “driving home” as “driving home from work”. (which didn’t make any sense with the rest of your comment)
I assume you are traveling out of town for Thanksgiving and don’t want to make the return trip on Sunday? (still not sure I understand why that would be stupid)
@DrWorm I think maybe they mean they work Wed-Mon, then they’ll be off Tues-Sun but they’ll have to drive all the way back home (from out of town relative, maybe?) just to work the last day of their work week, Monday.
@DrWorm I think the ‘driving home Sunday is stupid’ bit is, perhaps, because everyone else is also doing it and therefore nasty nasty traffic? So, take off Monday to drive back then? I like this game.
@cranky1950 This is what we try to do. Drive on Wednesday and come back the following Monday. The traffic on the following Monday is much easier than on Sunday. (And we drive from Chicago to Virginia so it is a hike)
I only take Thursday and the “so few people at work on Friday it’s like a free day” rings true at my work place. But I don’t take Wednesday off either because so many people knock off early on that day. Taking off either Wednesday or Friday is like wasting a vacation day because you aren’t getting full value.
@DrWorm Yeah, I hear you. I’m taking Friday off because I’ll be traveling back from Philadelphia. Easier to just stay the night and blow off work. Besides, if I don’t use my floater days, I lose 'em.
I work in the arts, and we got performances all week, except Thursday, so someone’s gotta be here. Not me, though. I’m using one of my floater days on Friday.
I work more, because I work for a rather large online/on air retailer and this is our busiest week/weekend of the year. In return, management sends an email saying how much they appreciate their hard work.
@hollboll +1
Since i’m in retail (brick &mortar, not on the interwebs) there is no time off for the holidays. all hands on deck. in fact, Thusday I go in @ 5:30 am(off @ 2p), Friday I get to go in @ 2Fam*(off @ 10:30am), during which time I am Supposed to roam the Store from 2-6 trying to sucker people into signing up for a store credit card(20 something % interest). then at 6a(when the Ad starts) i get to do my actual Job, ringing up the heathens purchases.
Happy Fucking Thanksgiving.
I’m not bitter about the credit card thing at all…no…
@earlyre Sorry I hate what stores have started doing to workers around the few times that most people are finally able to put their feet up for a minute. Black friday is the worst.
Used to have to take Friday off due to lack of train service, but now they make those poor folks run them on Friday (and, a lot of actual holidays) so… I’ll be going in. Should be a nice, quiet day.
It’s like she knows she’s a cartoon who only exists for the sake of the callout graphic, and she too is thoroughly enjoying said callout. It looks like a solid auto-reply message; I can see why she’s proud. Maybe in her universe, they actually had to remove that chunk of her screen in order to make the callout, and now this is the only way for her to review it. Maybe her eyes are actually holographic projectors. There’s really no way to not enjoy this image.
@brhfl LOL. Its like they took the notion of characters who look up at their thought balloons when they are thinking, and then took it up like 3 or 4 notches of ridiculousness.
Thought I would be the only retail person here. I’m working 7 days straight (today was Day 6) and it feels like each day gets longer and longer. You’d think being constantly busy would make the days shorter.
Tuesday-Friday
What is this ‘work’ of which you speak? I’m retired.
@OldCatLady
Same here … only I got bored, adopted a couple of at risk kids … and now I’m working harder than ever!!
The whole year. (no job)
My job also closes at 2PM on Wednesday? and then ostensibly “plays games for morale boosting” 2-3. But my crew conveniently gets “lost” and goes for snacks/drinks instead.
Almost all of my coworkers are taking the week off, so I have to work M-W.
I have off school so I’d like to work extra, but since google gives their real employees pto around holidays it usually means there’s no work available for us lowly subcontractors.
Actually the only day of the year I work
@MehnofLaMehncha
Are you Thankta Clause?
Tuesday-Friday, and I don’t get paid for them yet…
I work mon-tues
After that I have off till December.
I get Thursday and Friday off. This year, I decided to take Wednesday off as well.

@baqui63 Get well soon!
@baqui63 Heal! You clearly aren’t doing the ‘getting away from it all’ thing this year.
@baqui63
Well shit. Sorry to hear!
@f00l, @lljk, @OldCatLady
Thanks.

I don’t work Fridays normally (and don’t get paid for them either), and I will be off on Thanksgiving day also.
Why does “none” have a frowny face?! I’m getting 2 days of holiday pay.
Sigh. I have to work. 13.33hrs as a 911 dispatcher, alone, overnight. But at least I get holiday pay.
@jbrookebarrow And you get to be a real-life superhero. I salute you and those like you–as much of a first responder as police and firefighters. You’re awesome!

@jbrookebarrow
911 call takers have an important job: keeping callers calm.
@jbrookebarrow I’ve had to call 911 twice for my mother. Y’all do great work. Thank you!
@jbrookebarrow Okay so seriously, why do they not double staff? What the hell when two calls come in at once - one gets to listen to hold music? Is there a roll-over??

@RiotDemon I refuse to do any shopping on Thanksgiving. I won’t even open a retailer’s email the day of. Nope.
@KMakato I still won’t shop on Thanksgiving but I have stopped railing against the retailers that open on the holiday. I have had too many people tell me they depend on the holiday pay to make ends meet.

Wed - Monday, we get Fri off as a holiday. Driving home on Sunday is stupid.

Air retailer? How does your employer’s air compare to the famous “Meh Texas Air”?
What is this “time off” you speak of?

*the F stands for FUCKING
@earlyre for real. I’ll never forget those 3AM and 5AM Black Friday shifts. Hope it goes as well as it can for you!
