Coffee, concentrated lemon juice shots up to 4 times a day for kidney stones, water, lemonade, 70% diet soda mixed with 30% regular sode. You can lead me to water, but I won’t drink it unless I have flavored it with something like cranberry juice or lemonade.
I wrote my own water logger to try to get to 2 liters per day. Over 1582 days since my last kidney stone operation, my average is 1.71 Liters per day.
@cfg83 Be aware that one of the metabolic products of vitamin C is oxalate. The amounts in lemon juice are unlikely to be problematic (and I’m sure you already know that the citrate helps to slow or reverse oxalate stone formation) but avoiding excess C is a good idea. I went over 10 years between my first and second stone episodes.
@werehatrack Thank you. After my first kidney stone procedure, the doctor said “drink four ounces of concentrated lemon juice” per day, aka the amount in those plastic lemons you see in the fruit/veggie section of the supermarket.
I also used to take 1000mg Vitamin C pills, but I don’t anymore.
When we got our first home In 2005, my commute went from 30 to 70 miles round trip per day. I would get to work and RUN into the building to go to the bathroom. Before the commute I used to drink a minimum of one big gulp every day. I used a “32 ounce” Igloo beverage cooler for this. The igloo fell by the wayside. Add the drier climes to the new location and McDonald’s mochas and I was on the path to my first kidney stone child.
The second kidney stone child was because of the pandemic. I started on a long cup-o-noodles kick, and ate lots of Keebler peanut butter crackers.
As far as I am concerned, if I had kept my old habits despite the commute or pandemic, then I would never have been blessed with two kidney stone children.
/showme Anthropomorphized goat named “cfg83” beaming with pride and joy at his two kidney stone children, who are named Romulus and Remus.
Coffee in the AM (3-4+ 12oz mugs)
Flavored water in the afternoon (especially if I’m outside)
or Tea (Earl Gray or Constant Comment usually if chilly and inside)
Adult beverage around dinner (beer /wine/mixed drink) some days.
Margarita in the summer by the pool or with nachos on occasion.
Still going through the last of the mixes I bought here a while back.
I enjoy carbonation, and finally got a soda stream for Christmas. The only reason i asked for one is I dusted off the old co2 tanks from college growing days, paid for the re certification (last was 15 years ago!), fill up, and a hose on amazon later and I have months of fizz.
Also, Buffalo Wild Wings gives out free NA beers with takeout orders. Not many people want them, so my location will give you all you want if you ask. Especially if they know you are a sober / zebra striping. I kept them around for the “ritual” drinking times, e.g. parties, new years, etc. but have honestly gotten to enjoy the taste of Heineken 0.0 for refreshment. It is still empty calories (if I can’t have alcohol, I want caffeine) so it isn’t like I drink them all day even though they are free, but they have been surprisingly enjoyable.
@KNmeh7
That’s really cool. Never considered that you would have to have CO2 tanks re-certed. Guess I should have known that from my scuba tank days. Which reminds me I should pull mine out and check it. I’m sure it’s well past it’s “best by” date…
@chienfou My buddy was the grower, and I had never actually filled the tanks. One has a certification date of 88. You could say they are built like. . . yea.
I assumed because I refill my propane tanks, and when they get too old the guys tell me to go exchange it at the blue rhino stops and choose the one with the newest certification stamp. The teenage clerks always give me a funny look when I am going through 5-10 full tanks looking for a tiny number.
@catthegreat It means alternating between alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks over a session. Idea is to lessen overall consumption over the night, but also allow the alcohol to affect the person before the next drink–which usually isn’t happening. There has always been O’douls, but with craft NA and faux-spirits, the switch isn’t as noticeable (no one was drinking a glass of water in between), and therefore helpful.
Seems like a decent concept, and the younger generation seems to have a better relationship with alcohol than mine so who knows if its easier / helpful / just journalists making shit up?
@chienfou@KNmeh7 I use (refillable) CO2 bottles for my kegerator. When it runs low, I take the old one in and they exchange it for a fresh one (they even weigh it to give credit for any remaining gas). So the brew shop deals with any testing/recert of the cylinders.
@chienfou@KNmeh7@macromeh Heh. Welding gas bottles have certs, too. I have a pair that are close to empty, and I’m going to be very surprised if the O2 bottle passes hydrostat. My oldest brother bought it in 1967, and it’s been past date since 1971.
@KNmeh7 I had to give up all drinks that has C02 in them. my belly can’t properly process that gas, so I get bloated & start passing the gas the wrong way.

There are different kinds of kidney stones, so their names could be based on their type. For example, the oxalate type could be “Oxy”.
Deep in center of plushy is the original kidney stone. You should be able to hear the tiniest rattle. Over time it would rattle into powder, so maybe you just use a little plastic bead to keep it rattlin’ instead.

‘Rita’s, huh? Line ‘em up and make ‘em strong.
I think the people at that Bonnie Raitt show may have had a few ‘Rita’s themselves.

coffee
Coffee, soda, cider. Occasional water.
The 1st 3 options!
Kool-Aid, sodas, Gatorade, water, barley tea, and other stuff. All sugar free because diabeetus.
@Pony I love barley tea!
@Kyeh It’s so good! My favorite for when I want tea but don’t want caffeine.
@Pony Yes! It’s pretty much the only thing my mother drinks these days.
@Kyeh @Pony What my wife drinks is brewed so weak that it is barely tea…
@Kyeh @macromeh I’m the opposite- I brew my tea extra strong.
@macromeh @Pony
So it’s more than barely barley.
@Kyeh @macromeh More like burly barley!

Otherwise, watermelon is good for stones/prevention.
@chienfou @mediocrebot Yes, those kidney stone kids should steer clear of watermelon.

@mediocrebot OMG, I have ANOTHER idea for this :
1 - You make a kidney stone.
2 - Doctor extracts kidney stone.
3 - Kidney stone is put into capsule and mailed to Kidney Stone Kids ©.
3 - Kidney Stone Kid plushy is mailed back to victim … err … parent of Kidney Stone Kid.
