@oppodude The reason it doesn’t melt is the styrofoam cup. Sonic, with their ice and cups, have spoiled me to the point that I have grown to be unable to drink a soft drink out of a paper cup anymore. Talk about your first world problems. If I go thru a fast food drive thru and that establishment serves their drinks in paper cups, I will make a second stop at Sonic for the drink(s).
@DrWorm well yah. Those cups rival the ones sold here! But there is just something about that ice which is so wonderful. More research is needed during happy hour!
@oppodude, you said it! I’ll drive miles out of my way to get a drink from Sonic, just because of the ice. My Siri knows my favorite request is, “where is the closest Sonic?” If someone can create a version for homemade Sonic ice, I’ll buy it.
Get one from the Amazon Warehouse, those are fine. Buy a sleeve for it if you don’t wanna get the paint scratched. Get a “straw lid” for it, cheap at REI if Amazon sellers are gouging today.
Pour drink into Hydro Flask and you won’t care what cup it came in. It will stay cold for days (in Death Valley in summer) so start asking for “no ice” or “light ice”. It won’t fit in your cup holder unless you buy an adaptor, but no worries, it won’t spill either. Easy one handed operation. The Hydro Flask Does Not Sweat.
Tell your family/friends to keep their paws off your your Hydro Flask. Eventually you will prob also want a 2nd one as backup that’s also just for you. Let other family members get their own damned Hydro Flasks.
@oppodude, I have a weird question for you. How much do you tip at Sonic? Say you get a Rt 44 during afternoon half price and it costs about $1.25, how much do you tip? For that I usually give a quarter…I go through the drive-through, but they do have to walk outside to serve me.
@texaridian I go a quarter or so - or to the nearest quarter … Sometimes they get jilted and if it is a carhop that serves me a lot (on the weekend mornings it’s usually one of two), every so often I tip a buck. …
@oppodude@travo@DrWorm@texaridian The ice Sonic uses is called nugget ice. GE has a home countertop version coming soon for $500. Otherwise you’re looking at a small commercial unit in the $2500+ range.
@DrWorm
If you use a hydro flask, most want less ice. More drink. But if you love the ice that much, get all-ice. Still better in a Hydro Flask.
By it won’t leak or spill, what I mean is: set it upside down on the passenger seat. Drive around. It won’t leak or spill. With either cap. If they’re closed.
The regular cap the Hydro Flask comes with won’t sweat. If you get a straw cap, one handed operation and all that, the straw cap itself will sweat, but only a tiny tiny bit. The bottle part won’t sweat.
Also with the straw cap, the drink does not stay cold quite forever, but still v v cold in the desert sun all day.
People start asking for “light ice” after they get a Hydro Flask, cause w regular ice the drink it too cold for most people for many many hours.
…
I thought these things were stupid expensive trendy BMW-yoga-mom fashion statements until I got my first one. Fucking necessity. Esp at 107F. Now I can’t imagine going back to cups.
The slings and sleeves you can get for them often come w shoulder or wrist straps, so free hands when walking around.
@oppodude Not so sure about that. They funded off Indiegogo and tripled their goal on the first day. On the other hand, I think it was supposed to release last year, and now they’re saying late fall 2016.
@capguncowboy Those don’t actually work do they? I thought it was the latent heat of fusion in the phase change from solid to liquid that makes water ice an effective cooler.
@miko1@f00l@mfladd I totally read this as, you like your ice to be ground up in cocaine while you soak your balls in Scotch. And I have to say, it sounds like you’re living high, you fucking one-percenter.
It depends. Ice from the fridge ice maker is fine for shaking or stirring. I use crushed ice from the fridge ice maker to chill glasses. I like to use spheres from my Ice Chest for cocktails on the rock(s). I’m going to start using this method for clear cubes and sticks. I just need to get a small cooler.
As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, the Blendtec makes the most awesome Grasshopper.
I like my ice from clean, frequently services machines, that will provide an end product free from big parts and teenage spit, or whatever that pitchfork-burn-Frankstein Nightline (or whatever, again) piece about how gross ice machines are.
Any kind, as long as it is clear, not the cloudy stuff that normally comes from a home faucet or ice maker. Bagged ice from the store, or home ice from really good water.
Nugget ice
@PenguinOnTheRox Coming soon (supposedly): The Opal Nugget Ice Maker for home use
Two words: Sonic ice.
@oppodude Like, pellets right?
@travo something like that. It just lasts forever. And is fun to munch on.

@texaridian They just need to add a tipping feature to the mobile app. I usually have zero cash on me and I feel bad for the carhops. Come on Sonic!
@DrWorm
Hydro Flask
32oz or 40oz or 64oz
Get one from the Amazon Warehouse, those are fine. Buy a sleeve for it if you don’t wanna get the paint scratched. Get a “straw lid” for it, cheap at REI if Amazon sellers are gouging today.

PS these will last approx forever.

@f00l
But the ice is the best part.
@texaridian I go a quarter or so - or to the nearest quarter … Sometimes they get jilted and if it is a carhop that serves me a lot (on the weekend mornings it’s usually one of two), every so often I tip a buck. …
@f00l @DRWorm At Sonic, use “EZ Ice” and you get less ice and more drink and the ice usually sticks around for quite a while (1/2 day or so).

Smaller sizes work great at Starbux.
@jqubed Coming to Meh in 3 years for $250
@oppodude Not so sure about that. They funded off Indiegogo and tripled their goal on the first day. On the other hand, I think it was supposed to release last year, and now they’re saying late fall 2016.
@jqubed looks cool. Just can’t justify 450 for ice. And an overly optimistic schedule for crowd funding? Say it ain’t so.
@f00l You’re comparing a $35 steel insulated cup to the Styrofoam one that you get at Sonic for like a penny?
/giphy shame on you
@compunaut
No, suggesting he consider getting a nice flask and dumping his cup quality check forevermore.
/giphy quality check
@oppodude Sonic happy hour, every day. I love the ice so much.
When ARE you going to sell these? I keep waiting!
@capguncowboy +1 for whiskey stones. I have a set.
@PocketBrain I always wanted some when Woot sold them but I missed out. Kept waiting for them to list 'em up again, but they didn’t
@capguncowboy Those don’t actually work do they? I thought it was the latent heat of fusion in the phase change from solid to liquid that makes water ice an effective cooler.
@SSteve I don’t think they work as well as an ice cube, but they don’t water down your drink either
@SSteve Water also has a mad high specific heat.
@capguncowboy I got some in a bag o’crap a few years back.
Shaved ice. Like Bahama Bucks or Eskimo Hut.
/giphy shaved ice
@2many2no but it melts. Chill.
Crushed, like my spirit.
Most ice “cubes” aren’t really cubes.
Bologna
Just say’n
@mfladd Excellent. Great subtitle. I needed that laugh tonight.
I carve each ice cube into a tiny ice sculpture before depositing it in my drink.
Cold.
@Pavlov
Not vanilla flavored.
@fucker You are a (your user name).
crushed in coke and balls in scotch
@miko1 is that why they wear kilts? For scotch balls?
@mfladd
Think I need to visit Scotland.
@miko1 @f00l @mfladd I totally read this as, you like your ice to be ground up in cocaine while you soak your balls in Scotch. And I have to say, it sounds like you’re living high, you fucking one-percenter.
/giphy soaking my balls
@joelmw I don’t understand why the confusion. That is exactly what I meant!
@miko1 Envious, that’s all.
@joelmw
This little indulgence needs a name!
Gimme a single-malt Scotch Iced Balls In Coke.
Like Sputnik, spherical yet pointy in parts
Crushed cubes cool the drink faster, but then keep getting in your mouth as you drink. I’ve never seen ice in a cylindrical shape, though.
@DVDBZN
@Pavlov very interesting video
@Pavlov
If I order this ice equipment for home use, pls tell me I can get the music-free ice machine.
That music would be deal-killer.
@Pavlov
Thank you. Now I can die in peace.

i like my ice like i like my women
i will take what ever i can get
@communist Great Line. I’m going to have to steal it.
I like my ice from clean, frequently services machines, that will provide an end product free from big parts and teenage spit, or whatever that pitchfork-burn-Frankstein Nightline (or whatever, again) piece about how gross ice machines are.
@vanslaterco that’s supposed to say bug parts, people.
I like dirty ice from dirty lovers
Just sayin’.
I bought 8 sphere ice cube molds from you. So I like them boob shaped!
/image icesical in drink
@medz
/giphy oh you fancy, huh?
Shaken and then strained out. Who wants ice in a martini??
I like those little soft pellets of ice you get at hospitals.
Dry. Shaken, not stirred.
@f00l I like dry ice too.
Frozen.
Ice belongs in a cooler, on an injury, in rink form I guess, and inside a Boston shaker… and that’s about it. Otherwise, I like my ice melted.
Any kind, as long as it is clear, not the cloudy stuff that normally comes from a home faucet or ice maker. Bagged ice from the store, or home ice from really good water.
@KDemo No need for a chess timer when your pieces are melting…
