You probably can’t see or hear it from where you are, but I’m making that vague shrugging gesture and kinda high pitched “ehh” sound that indicates modest general approval of a thing. I’ll continue to do so for the next few hours in case anyone wants to swing by and witness it for themselves.
@ConAndLibrarian After “Man of Steel” and “Batman v. Superman”, I was at the same place, not knowing if I could give another DC movie a chance. I am glad I relented and saw “Wonder Woman”.
@DrWorm I saw a considerable chunk of ‘Batman vs. Superman’ while waiting to be helped in a Comcast store. I didn’t really think anything could make the experience of waiting around for Comcast any worse, but there you have it…
@gominosensei Your standards are too low. How can B be “average”? That’s fine and all, but I fear that society and the entertainment industry have so let you down that you’ve just resigned yourself to accept their awful shit.
@elimanningface Had discounted tickets the gf bought from work, then paid the surcharges for the recliners and Real 3D. It’s not an Imax style film but the Real 3D is always worth it to me.
@joelmw That’s the average grade I’ve given the superhero movies I actually bother to see. If movies were regularly doing worse than that, I’d have to reevaluate my selection criteria.
Saw it, and enjoyed it. Agree the final battle was kinda unnecessary, but it was a fun time out with the family. And man, is Gal Gadot easy on the eyes. Wowza.
For all the grief given when Gal Gadot was cast, it turns out she plays a rather great Wonder Woman. A fine mix of femininity and strength with a nice mix of innocence and humor thrown in. Absolutely recommended!
@cinoclav I love the casting of Gal Gadot because she’s not just another Hollywood Barbie doll. Overall I found the movie fairly boring. In fact as I sit here I can’t really remember hardly anything about it, it just wasn’t very memorable. As is often the case I wish they had given the secondary characters a little more to work with. Ewen Bremner’s character in particular seemed to be set up for a redemption story, and then it just never happened. Bremner is such a great character actor that he makes even small parts stand out.
Any movie that can turn David Thewlis into a superhero WITH A HANDLEBAR MOUSTACHE gets big points from me. Combine that with the terrific shots of Amazon island at the beginning and I give this a solid “Meh,” since it loses a lot of points for pointless and boring fight scenes and Chris Pine blowing up a weapon that can “destroy five square miles” at about 500 feet above Belgium, to no effect whatsoever (except possibly killing a certain character.)
The local drive-in showed The Lego Batman Movie and Wonder Woman last weekend. Sounded perfect, but I’ll wait until my son is in town to get my summer movie fix.
It’s a good movie, better than some, but I can’t give it a “great”. It’s on the upper end among DC offerings (hell, it might be the best that I can recall).
What most disappointed me though is that I expected it–based on the gushing reviews–to be a tour de force, singular, revolutionary, bold statement of feminist values. It is not. It’s maybe not as horribly sexist as other super hero movies and there are what feel like obligatory moments that say, “hey, you mansplaining, misogynist chauvinists, cut it out”. Whoop.
In fact my wife–who’s the fiery one between the two of us–was probably even more vocally critical of the movie’s lingering sexism.
@joelmw I’m pretty feminist and I was very satisfied. I didn’t think it was sexist at all. I loved it and I understand why so many people loved it so much. It was great to have such a badass woman starring in her own superhero movie.
@joelmw I haven’t seen it yet, but I’ve heard many similar concerns. Nothing like the leaked Whedon script, of course, but still… far from the feminist tour de force (stealing your words because my brain is mush) many were hoping for.
I do still hope to see it at some point. I was never into Marvel or DC comics, and I’ve yet to see a Marvel or DC movie that I’d be willing to watch a second time. But I think a lot of that stems from just how masculine the universes seem to be. Or something, I don’t know. Not terribly relatable.
Which I guess leads to a final thought which is that WW could fail on a lot of levels, and still come out as a net positive for all the young girls feeling empowered by this strong feminine force. No doubt in my mind that we can (and must) do better, but hopefully it’s a sign that maybe we actually will.
@carrieinparadis: I don’t feel strongly enough to argue too strenuously, which I suppose the world will survive. And I don’t think I could offer a better reply than what @brhfl (who does damn well even with a temporarily “mushy brain” ) said:

@nogoodwithnames on my way!
@nogoodwithnames Count me in too!
@nogoodwithnames I did want to witness it for myself, but, ehhh, I’m sure the way you’re doing it is just fine.
@nogoodwithnames So is an “ehh” a higher rating or lower than a “Meh”?
So, where are all those spoilers @mediocrebot promised, so I won’t have to go see it?
@phendrick Soylent green is made of people.
@phendrick spoiler alert!!!

@sammydog01 yeah, I figured that out even before Charlton told me!
After the last few terrible DC movies, I was very pleasantly surprised this movie was quite good rather than borderline awful.
General movie: A- (average is B )
Blowout superhero fight ending: D+ (Average is C-)
Feminism: A- (average is C-)
@gominosensei Batman v Superman ruined me. I do not know if I can give another DC movie a chance.
@ConAndLibrarian Do it. Wonder Woman is worth the price of admission.
@cinoclav regular admission, imax admission, real 3d admission, or matinee?

Spoiler alert: Luke Wayne is Superman.
Saw it, and enjoyed it. Agree the final battle was kinda unnecessary, but it was a fun time out with the family. And man, is Gal Gadot easy on the eyes. Wowza.
@ACraigL Chris Pine isn’t bad either.
@RiotDemon “Above average” as I understand it.
@ACraigL very much so.

I liked the movie. Saw it last night. I’m not going to absolutely rave about it, but I enjoyed it and didn’t feel like I wasted my money.

@sligett I’m jealous you have a local drive-in theater. The closest one to us shuttered a few years ago and there are none nearby at all.

I’m sick of settling. We can do better.

@joelmw - There’s a terrific review of “Valerian” by MaryAnn Johansen at FlickFilosopher 1
I would say a LOT of it can be applied to “Wonder Woman” on the same grounds.
@aetris That was fun to read. Thanks.
