@gwrankin Approximately what size rooms do you use them in? I'm considering buying one or two, but I live in an older house with tall ceilings and rooms at least 10 x 12 or larger.
Mountain Cedar season has taken hold and it will make my allergies so much worse. I could really use something like this for some much needed relief.
@TheTexasTwister You didn't ask me, but... I have one of the large ones in a pretty large room (older home, 23 X 19ish) and it works pretty well. I have animals and it takes some of the dander and dust out of the air. It's loud, but if you can stand the noise, it works pretty well. The filters are expensive, but HolmesProducts.com has two for one deals, sometimes with free shipping. Get on their mailing list and you'll be notified of the deals. Hope this helps. (Dallas, here). Merry Christmas!
@Tadlem43 Thanks, that does kind of help. I'm thinking of purchasing two of these and placing one in each occupied bedroom. I'm just hoping that the rooms aren't too large for these obviously smaller devices. Since cost is an issue purchasing what is available from Meh is important as two from here is nearly the same price as one from Amazon.
@TheTexasTwister I use one in our bedroom (13.5ft x 13.5ft) and one in my office where the cat litter box is (11ft x 12.5ft). My wife needed to clear up her allergies in the bedroom and she's been fine ever since we put one in there. They also work very well and rather quickly for bad smells. In fact, sometimes we bring one into the kitchen if our cooking is especially pungent and it clears the odors out in about 2 hours. I'm definitely a satisfied user.
@Tadlem43@TheTexasTwister I just found a GREAT deal on a full season filter 4 pack. Buy one get one free for $44.99 w/free shipping! That's less than $6 a piece and they average $13-$17 at Amazon.
@gwrankin You're very welcome! My larger one take two filters. They have a double pack on sale for $30 then get 2 more free, plus free shipping. (the blue HEPA filters). That's about half of what they are on Amazon. If you sign up for that sites e-mails, you can catch their sales, esp. with free shipping. I love 'em!
good timing - our old purifier just shit the bed last week. Got one of these last time, works very well and with 2 perhaps we can get quantity discounts on filters. One word of caution - the ionizer works, around and on the cleaner is a fine coating of dust (a common ionizer 'side effect'
@RedOx I noticed that. I also notice that I don't sneeze my way into every day since I run these 24/7. First time changing the filter was horrifying. Yech.
@OldCatLady yea it was gross but that means it's working! I actually replaced the foam pre-filter with a charcoal prefilter I had left over from our dead one (Amazon search for "Carbon Pre-Filter Cut-to-Fit") keeps the mail filter cleaner for longer and the carbon helps with odors.
This deal is for homes that need to be purified - wasn't there a show "homes""on Holmes --well close enough? So for all you people that smell a deal tonight..have at it as the order button is calling your name.
More likely they were turned into the California franchise tax board for failure to comply with one of the (imho) more onerous California tax laws. To wit:
"Online Purchases - California Sales and Use Tax
California residents are also required to pay a tax when they purchase tangible property that will be used, consumed, or stored in California. California law requires tax on in-state purchases, and also requires tax on items purchased out-of-state for use in California. Tax collected by the retailer here in California is called sales tax, and the retailer is responsible for reporting and paying the tax. When an out-of-state or online retailer doesn't collect the tax for an item delivered to California, the purchaser may owe "use tax," which is simply a tax on the use, storage, or consumption of personal property in California. Items that are exempt from sales tax are exempt from use tax as well. Use tax liabilities are often created by Internet or mail order purchases with out-of-state retailers not required to collect the tax." [...]
Generally you can file a letter with the seller stating the item is "not for use or sale in California" and they are allowed (but not always willing) to waive the tax. E.g. You're buying a chainsaw for use at your ranch in Baja California or solely on your boat outside state waters. You would not have to pay sales tax on that item to comply with the rule.
There's actually a line on the California state income tax return. It says something like, "we assume you bought $1,600 in online purchases and are assessing an imputed use tax in the amount of 8% against your withheld earnings unless you (a) check this box and (b) provide a different amount for online purchases and calculate your own 8% tax burden."
I'm paraphrasing but the 2015 form has it all in line 91 and the instructions are page 22 of the 540 booklet.
@2palms I bet if online retailers stopped selling and sending to California specifically because of that inane state law that law would get repealed REALLY fast. Of course, no one wants to lose all that income from California so it won't happen.
@2palms All that says is that if you buy something from an out-of-state retailer that doesn't collect sales tax (which they don't have to, being out-of-state and all...), that you have to pay the tax yourself. This is law in many, probably most, states that have a sales tax. Most people just have no idea.
@immaterial Still kind of a dumb law. Though in California it seems that they are a good deal more aggressive about collecting. (At least from what 2palms has written, providing I've read it correctly).
They are extremely aggressive, like @thetexastwister says. I have another "fun" story. We once received delivery of a shipment of cabinets, and were hired by a contractor to install them. Several months later, we started getting phone calls from the CA "Franchise Tax Board" looking to collect sales tax on the order! As near we can figure it, someone at one of the weight stations reported our address as the consignee of the shipment of cabinets, and since the order was shipped in from out of state the FTB came looking to us for the use tax.
Since we didn't purchase the cabinets I think the FTB ended up collecting the use tax from the contractor. But I was flabbergasted that someone at the FTB "cared enough" to track down our contact info and try to collect use tax for a single (maybe $60,000?) truck full of cabinets that would have otherwise gone unreported.
We've got two of these — from last time, I think. They work well in small to mid-sized rooms and are effective at mitigating dust. Filters aren't cheap, but Holmes is always running BOGO sales.
So what level of purification are we talking? Just Satan's minions, or more inner circle full demon cleansing? Let's say - for example - an Ouija game went really, really wrong; can this handle it? Thanks!
Christmas present for myself. Since most everyone speaks highly of this and the Amazon reviews are good, I bit the bullet. Also having 5 cats and 4 dogs kind of tipped the scale for me....yeeeah.
@jbrookebarrow I have one of mine setup directly next to the 'top entry' litter box we use for our two cats. It works fantastically.. when I scoop the litter I turn it up to '3' and any dust gets sucked into the filter instead of into my nostrils. (preferable). It's also great to leave it like that for when you're adding new litter. No dust means you don't keep smelling it for the next hour...

@AttyVette
This deal stinks!
@AttyVette Pure coincidence.
Lol @ Fotomat. I remember those.
Wow, not tempting. Think I'm good. Thanks for ringing in xmas eve sans yet another stupid purchase, meh!
I still have the 3 I ordered last time. I like them a lot.. I think 3 is enough for me...

Elf on a shelf next to this deal...I smell a sell for last minute shoppers..well not really --even elf there can't get it delivered on time..

Can you get it here before Christmas?
@densa Nope!
@densa well you didn't say which Christmas...bet it could be here by Christmas 2016..
This deal is for homes that need to be purified - wasn't there a show "homes""on Holmes --well close enough? So for all you people that smell a deal tonight..have at it as the order button is calling your name.
Air ye air ye..this deal is a quite a cleansing one..aww the smell of success
So when you factor what replacement filters cost (at a minimum) the purifier itself is selling for $10.
I'm beginning to think I show up daily for the critique of item numbers.
Bought this for $28 in April.. Quite decent for small rooms, but noisy at max setting. BTW - Did Meh move to CA?

@TheTexasTwister That includes Texas [http://comptroller.texas.gov/taxinfo/sales/faq_use.html#use3].
@immaterial Yes, I can't see anything in the code I quoted above that says meh should be collecting the tax! In fact it says they're not required to.
All I could find this morning was references to when Amazon made this same change back in 2012, based on a compromise they made with the governor a year earlier. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/13/amazon-tax-california-res_n_1882441.html But my google-fu is failing me when it comes to finding the actual imperative.
@immaterial Still kind of a dumb law. Though in California it seems that they are a good deal more aggressive about collecting. (At least from what 2palms has written, providing I've read it correctly).
@2palms You have GOT to come to one of my cocktail parties, you lively meh-er, you.
LOL Yeah I'm a real hoot IRL ;)

I AM SO IN THE MARKET FOR THIS
THANK YOU MEH

@mcanavino We're filtering like Scientology does to people's bank accounts.. [and souls]..
(Disclaimer: my wife read me a part of Lisa Rinna's book today and it utterly fascinates me)
