Historical High Fives.
3There is a belief that the high five started in the 1970s during either a Dodgers or Cardinals game. Some say it started as far back as the 1920s coming from African-American culture and the “low five.” So that means it could be even further back but it hasn’t been recorded or understood as a “high five” today.
What are your theories on the origin of the “high five” and share a picture or gif of your favorite “five” to offer?

I’ve heard that the high-five could not have been invented by one person due to the nature of the gesture, but I reserve the right to point out the awkward but still functional self-five.

The earliest (unsuccessful) attempt occured a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

@ircon96 I may have done something similar once, but lower. Super awkward.

Good topic for the curious. It is so sad to see the over use of the gesture today.High five for every routine event in sports especially.Made a free throw…made a tackle…caught a fly ball…walked onto the court/field without falling down…put on your own athletic shoes…Yup…High Five because you’ve done something that warrants congratulations. It is pathetic. My theory on origin is that it occured by accident when two people were trying to kill an insect on a wall before the invention of the fly swatter
Parent was trying to spank a kid. Kid turned just in time to smack the parent’s hand to push it away. Parent was surprised so the kid managed to escape. Another kid in the family witnessed that, congratulated the kid for avoiding being spanked, told all their friends demonstrating the high 5 and, well, the rest is history (grin),
My good friend @GetClosure shared this with me, so I thought I would share it with you. Here’s more information than you need or could ever want about High Fives.
