Maybe it’s time to lock that topic at some random and unannounced moment, and thereby create a “winner”?

That topic always crashes my mobile browser now. Does that mean it’s time to close it down?

- @Ignorant I managed to get it to load for a minute before crashing. There is just way too many giphys on one page I think. Some of them rather large.

  My forum view settings currently are:
  A limited # of new posts and replies plus all new posts and replies.
  (since some coder cruelly removed pagination as an option)
  
  The prev similar topic was locked by @thumperchick, after people commented that opening the topic started crashing mobile browsers regularly.
  
  No one know she was going to do that.
  I happened to be the last post before she did, and so I “won”. (Whoopie!)
  
  And then, per her suggestion, I started a replacement topic.
  (I disavow all responsibility for the result)
  
  Perhaps it’s time to “randomize a winner” for the current topic?
  
  Or not?

It is slow loading on my laptop which is older and is about 3 system updates behind (thus the browser is behind too), but it still loads. Twice I was the last post on this one for months - at one point around 6 months, this last time I think it was since early September and then someone goes hunting and pulls it up again and it is then like, “oh yeah I forgot about this thread”.

The toothbrush thread has nearly as many posts as this one does. Well except the tooth brush saga is mostly words and not giphy and image. I would imagine this is turning into a test of how robust meh’s servers are? So maybe don’t lock it until we crash those? I mean they’d never be able to get that much junk on one thread if they actually asked us to do it…

Hmm maybe there is a Guinness world record out of this somehow? Now that would be ironic. Meh’s website in the world record book Maybe don’t lock it until we find out?

Why is a collapsed thread:
- Taking up server resources and timeouts for broken image links generating the collapsed portion of the thread?
- Surely the “stops” at the latest 5, 10, 15, 20 threads can be pre-calculateed and pre-cached by the server?
- Turn the “uncollapse” button into a second round trip to the server to send the full thread to the browser?
- Clean dead links (giphy, image, etc), and broken youtube takedowns from the thread (Pssst: Put a space in front of the “/” and it won’t trigger the image/video replacement and will leave the poster’s intended trigger text.)
- Stop putting the topic rendering calc on the user’s browser computing power and move some of it back to the server.
- Give your servers and the browsers hints in meta-tags for each post to help them quickly avoid bad/broken/non-responding links (last reported good date?) Or collapsed threads.
- Use these threads as stress-tests for trying out faster-rendering techniques and measure both the server resources and the browser resources and get back to your Mediocre Labs roots.
That’s enough to offer a good start.
