I went to a comedy show years ago and a black comedian started that song, and after a couple of audience responses stopped and said, “White people love it when we sing that song”. Cue embarassed laughter. I was annoyed, I like that song and ever since when I hear it the first thing I think is the implication that my enjoyment is somehow racist.
Terrible movie, IMHO. And it bombed at the box office. Much better to read The Purple Cloud by M. P. Shiel, which the movie was based on . . . Decent little novel for a rainy day. Several movies have been based on that novel. If you are curious about the film in question, better (again, IMHO) to read the Wikipedia synopsis, and pay close attention to the details of the final scene.
Yeah no kid.

So it seems that your inlaws have one or two virtues …

If you’ve never seen “The World, the Flesh, and the Devil” now would be a good time to check it out.
And by now I mean 2017.
