I have a few times. Went through a whole bunch of different products (CBD vs THC, tinctures, oils, edibles, etc) trying to find one that would help with my pain issues. Unfortunately, none of them worked out for me, so I don’t use any of it now.
Although it is legal here in CA, it is not as easy to find as one would think. The nearest place I could purchase it at is about an hour away, I am way too lazy for that!
@ConAndLibrarian It’s all delivery services now because “oh, the children!” Can’t have a dispensary near the children. Try the app Weedfinder. Anything you want at your fingertips.
I have a handful of times in both Washington State and Oregon. Not a big user myself, but like @Pony, I was hoping to find something to help with hubby’s neuropathy.
First time in Washington was absolutely surreal! Having recently become available at retail outlets, the lines were massive. After selecting one gram of ‘blueberry kush’ at the recommendation of the budtender, I then had to take a slip of paper with my order and wait in another line for the cashier. Near the end of said line were two police officers in full body armor. One actually asked to see what I’d selected and complimented me on my choice!
Very weird! The three visits (in as many years) since then have been exceptionally uninteresting by comparison.
Very different from my experience in Washington. The shop was a converted house off the main street of a smallish town. The only person in the shop was a very pleasant and helpful 20-something girl. No ID (I’m very obviously over 21), make my selection from a glass display counter, hand her cash, wish each other a pleasant day and out the door.
My understanding is that in Oregon they want to scan your ID as soon as you walk in the door, but I don’t know as I’ve never actually been in an Oregon shop.
@ciabelle I probably have at least 6 pot shops within 8 miles of my home (WA state). Little store-fronts in little strip malls & some in homes.
I went in to check one out & it was a clean little place. So, I got a teeny bag (asked him for something not too strong).
I took a couple puffs (and inhaled).
Shit.
I was on my ass & stupid for 5 hours.
(Stupider than usual…)
Sigh… I’m sticking with beer & good Scotch.
The pot in the late 60’s-early 70’s wasn’t ANYTHING like this.
(Not that I would do that activity back then)…
@daveinwarsh It’s my understanding that the War on Drugs has led to all kinds of breeding and growing techniques that make it much more potent.
Recently a young person expressed surprised that it was even possible to smoke the leaves. I, of course, never smoked any in the '70s, but if the people who did got a bud it was time to play the lottery, if state lotteries had existed then.
It was all leaves. It was also $20 an ounce, or so I’m told.
@craigthom Actually, $10 for a four-finger lid (baggie). Mostly Stems, seeds & leaves. Tai-Sticks were $12 ea.
(Learned that from the history channel)… lol
Funny story - The only thing my mom ever taught me to cook/bake was weed. Well process it actually I guess is more accurate. Remove the seeds/stems and lay it out on a cookie sheet. I was 5 or maybe 6. I myself have never done any drugs (unless you count my mom putting cocaine on my gums when I was teething?) my parents did enough for the whole family.
@ChompyGator About 30 years ago I had friends who processed and packaged weed. Her mother, A, had ALS, and it helped her symptoms. The husband, F., was a postal carrier with Crohn’s disease. Their daughter, M, was taught weights and measures, and a certain amount of bookkeeping for the family business. Nice people.
@OldCatLady Sounds nice, I am glad she found some relief! My parents were just high school drop outs who liked to party. By age 5, I did most of the driving for my dad, he did pedals, because:short, but I did all the actual driving because he knew he was too impaired. By 9 when I could reach all the pedals, I did lots of driving I should never have had to do. The worst though was around 12 when he would give me the keys and tell me to go to X place for Y thing. I always worried I would be caught, and knew he would sell me out in an instant. “I didn’t even know that she took my keys officer, I thought she was doing her homework in her room…” or something along those lines. I also did a lot of bookkeeping in my youth, my grandma was a bookkeeper, and I spent a lot of time at their house. she used to let me “earn” to add columns, or do quarterly taxes for some clients. The worst part? I totally fell for it…lol
Yes, I’ve only ever bought weed legally. A whopping 2 grams total, so far… There’s a shop a short walk from my house. I was bored one day shortly after getting laid off so I figured I’d check it out.
I haven’t had to. A former co-worker is Chief Scientist at a company that makes cannabis oil vape pens and gave me a bunch. At the rate I use it, it may last a couple years.
My experience is similar - I took a couple tokes off a spliff a friend of mine was passing around back in the '70s. No doubt he had obtained it legally. Though where he could have in PA back then is more than I can say! Still, he always struck me as an honest sort of fellow. After a few tokes he did, anyway.
@PocketBrain Oh look, if it ain’t Jefferson Beauregard Sessions the Turd.
Hope you’re just being facetious/pedantic and aren’t one of those who believes in states’ rights when it comes to discriminating against teh gays but not when it comes to the allowing the heathens their demon weed.
@DennisG2014 Much as it pains me to say it:
We have yet to fully legalize pot in the US. That’s why there is so much trouble getting the banks to even take deposits from growers/distributors in ‘legalized’ states…
@DennisG2014 Maybe it’s my hypersensitivity but I assume that the response was from someone (@PocketBrain) very proud to express how wrong and negligent Meh was in asking this question.
@snapster Do you by any chance recall a heated discussion of “Objective Morality” years ago on Woot that was sparked by someone’s indignation that you’d make light of marijuana use? (might’ve been on 4/20 or something)
Of the many fierce “internerd squabbles” (a friend’s label for one of my proclivities) I’ve engaged in, it’s one of my proudest.
@DennisG2014 LOL duuuuude. It’s a fact. Federally illegal and therefore illegal in all states. That’s law. I make no statement of support for this law; the U.S. has had many terrible laws, like legal slavery for example. Some people say it should be illegal not because it is a hazard itself (and the best scientific evidence does not support this), but because it is a gateway drug. Sure it is, right after caffeine, alcohol and nicotine! But if you work for the fed or for a federal contractor, using it will cost you your job, regardless whether you have a legitimate, scientifically proven medical need for it.
So eat a brownie and chill; I think it should be reclassified and legal for medical use, if not also recreational use.
@PocketBrain lol Ok, my bad. We’re on the same side.
(don’t even get me started on that “gateway” thing…)
Guess I’m just a bit trigger happy after so many run-ins with so many ill-informed, boozy hypocrites.
@DennisG2014 Because many people are still unaware that while the states have legalized it the FEDs are still having a shit-fit. Until we get that dichotomy resolved the ‘legal’ states will be plagued with problems (i.e bank deposits etc) associated with being in limbo as to when the other shoe might drop at the fed level (which seems to be imminent lately) .
We are having a similar problem here in Alabama with gambling/electronic bingo/slot machines. It is a HUGE waste of time and resources, and one that no one seems to be willing to expend the political capital to sort out definitively.
As a child of the 70’s in college in CO I can’t imagine they have any more pot now than we did then…
@chienfou Maybe not more, but waaay stronger.
I might be the only marijuana user who misses the old days when it took more than just a hit or two to get totally fried.
One of the main reasons I’m looking forward to retail sales is finally getting to choose the potency of what I consume, instead of taking whatever one-hit-wonder-weed my “guy” has to offer.
I actually enjoy smoking it, and today’s stuff tastes fantastic compared to the old stuff, but I can’t really enjoy that flavor without becoming completely incapacitated.
Can’t wait to experiment with high CBD, low THC strains.
@DennisG2014 It turns out that your prescribing physician will give you glossy sales brochures from various companies, describing their merchandise. They also provide some helpful charts about strains and which pain receptors are affected by them, and ratios. I’m doing serious reading on the subject while waiting for my card. I blame @Pavlov for hauling the topic out into the forum, awhile back.
@OldCatLady I don’t want to get a card, i.e. put my name on a list as a marijuana user, because it is still illegal on the federal level and because we have an a-hole like Jeff Sessions as AG who thinks people who use MJ are bad hombres that should be populating his private, for-profit prisons.
@smyle I’m with ya. The couple times I tried it, I didn’t enjoy the experience. But a lot of people like it, and it seems harmless enough, so I don’t see any reason not to make it legal.
Even if that happens, though, I’ll almost definitely stick with the occasional whiskey (or whisky, depending on my mood) as my intoxicant of choice.
Noise, noise, noise, smokin’ weed, smokin’ weed, doin’ coke, drinkin’ beers. Pack o’ wraps, my good man, it’s time to kick back, drink some beers and smoke some weed.
If you have to do something to avoid reality, reduce stress of the inevitable, and invoke mental creativity with chemical catalysts, I would recommend THC over most other drugs. It is better than alcohol, or the human killer, opioids, and synthetic opioids. For most everything, moderation is the key; with the exception of opioids, that is. I feel very bad for good people out there who have been issued a death warrant with their first prescription of pain killers. RIP Chris Cornell, Tom Petty , and the 63000 + others who died last year from opioids.
@flooners I agree. However, it seems that is the human condition. Certainly displacing reality by watching a movie or attending a play, reading a fictional fantasy novel, etc. seems benign and somewhat healthy compared to ingesting a chemical to induce unreal thoughts and emotions. I typically rely on the former for my escape
Not to reopen any cans of worms history keeps unsuccessfully trying to shut, but although - like alcohol - cannibis can be a solo experience, for many people it’s a social, or even communal, one. Back in the day my escape of choice was used paperbacks (which I could obtain for a quarter the price of a joint and lasted a LOT longer) but that was a solo experience and I have good reason to believe that the people who were passing the weed at parties often made out a lot better than me.
At the risk of sounding all pop-sycho, I think that the real issue is people self-medicating their problems, and the focus should be on the problems, not the medication. FWIW I believe that we’re better off allowing users an unobstructed pathway to their drug of choice, track usage, and intervene when there’s evidence of abuse: with treatment though, rather than punishment.
Just waiting for shops to open here in MA.
Supposed to happen later this year.
Haven’t been able to find out where they’ll be, but hoping my city will have one.
Considering we have bars, liquor stores and/or Keno/tobacco parlors on every corner, I’m keeping my righteous indignation at the ready in case of an effort by hypocrites to prohibit pot shops.
Can’t tell you the number of hand-wringers I’ve encountered on FB who are terrified that their children will be destroyed by the demon-weed while their profiles invariably contain some kind of proud mention of the virtues of wine as a parenting aid.
Seriously, one woman who was convinced that legal pot would kill all the children actually had a home-made meme with a picture of a glass of chardonnay in her hand and the caption, “Mommy Juice”.
I’ve found that to be pretty typical.
I swear, there’s some kind of weed-fear:boozy-hypocrisy corollary.
@DennisG2014 Absolutely! In California they’ve pretty much turned the whole thing into a delivery service because of “the children!!” They really piss me off. The few dispensaries I’ve been to were no where near any kids, all in business parks.

I have a painful medical condition, but pot makes me depressed. I did find this awesome spray that I really liked, but they don’t make it any more. In California it’s so easy to get a “recommendation” that anyone who wants to buy pot can and has been doing it for years. The only change is now some doctors who make cash on the side writing recommendations will have to do something else.
If it’s a drug that only affects yourself, go for it. Weed, cocaine, LSD, whatever. If it’s a drug that fucks over everyone in your life, like meth, fentanyl, or k2, please stay the fuck away.
@JoetatoChip
You know cocaine kills.
I know very well and talk about fucking up a whole family…forever!
It is not ok, nor LSD and all the others you mentioned. Destroys lives.
I have never read of someone dying of pot. So to each his own.
@Kidsandliz …same goes if you drive tired… should we legislate how long you must sleep at night? Driving while is impaired is driving while impaired.
Anyone that gets behind the wheel while not 100% is fully to blame for whatever consequences come of that choice.
@kdemo It’s annoying to me that there’s a picture of Bob Marley on it, when it’s clearly not a Bob Marley song (except to those who think all reggae songs are by Bob Marley).

@shahnm I, like, found them in the fridge when I got the munchies.

@wmbarr Bro, I think you’re so baked you confused artichokes for batteries. Righteous…
@shahnm Those are some fat nuggets
I have a few times. Went through a whole bunch of different products (CBD vs THC, tinctures, oils, edibles, etc) trying to find one that would help with my pain issues. Unfortunately, none of them worked out for me, so I don’t use any of it now.

$5 back then. For a lid of Mexican cough-a-lot happy dope.
The potency was nothing compared to today. I can’t touch it today. Too strong, even if I wanted to. No way.
But still. Ah, those HS years.
@daveinwarsh Everybody sing along:
I prefer to grow my own.
Just got my medical user number this week, so it’ll take a month or so for the state to issue my card.

@kdemo It’s annoying to me that there’s a picture of Bob Marley on it, when it’s clearly not a Bob Marley song (except to those who think all reggae songs are by Bob Marley).
@craigthom - Good point, also pointed out by many in the video comments. I should have posted a version that credits The Toyes.
@kdemo Some of those comments on the video are by me under my pseudonym from The Front Page.
