But for the completeness, in addition to the fireplace mantle, there is a mantle that is worn as clothing (plus specific religious and royal versions). It does not resemble a sock, though.

When I was a kid I tried several times to wear various Christmas stockings I had. They were terrible as footwear…
but boy did I look cute! And a mantle? Nope. I grew up in an apartment complex behind an aging Montgomery Ward store and there were no fireplaces and definitely no mantles to put anything on. What we DID have next to the Christmas tree, that we chopped down every year, was a tension-pole, floor to ceiling, lamp with decorative hooks. You know, with the old barrel style shades… It was perfect for stocking hanging! Or, the wine rack…! Don’t judge, it was the 70s.
