@er1c I just reread it and it says nothing about that. It does however, say 'no trolling'. To me, posting multiple threads every day that either only have a gif in the OP or have only a few words (if that) seems to definitely be a form of trolling. Posting a meme that's six years old in the thread subject along with some question marks is not relevant to anything.
@PurplePawprints 1. Trolling is not synonymous with sharing a gif. 2. Sharing a funny question, which makes me laugh, to hopefully in turn make the community that is bonded around meh laugh, is not trolling.
@er1c You're right, they are not necessarily the same thing. But this isn't Pinterest or Facebook. If you run across a gif that's relevant to a conversation, then yeah, sharing it isn't trolling. But, posting every damn thing you run across that you find even remotely amusing comes pretty close on a forum that isn't a gif/meme sharing site. Maybe start one thread where you post all that stuff so those who aren't interested aren't having to wade through tons of filler.
The ideological lines are pretty evenly split on this topic of forum rules and moderation. On the one hand, there's The Idealists: The group that wants orderly, neat forums filled with approved content reducing time to peruse the many threads and knowing when they read a thread and/or post to a thread that nothing untoward is going to occur because if it does, THE NEOPRENE ENFORCER will swoop in and (with any luck) delete any offensive/off-topic/uninteresting/non-contributing drivel from the thread and all is right with the Idealists forum and e-commerce experience.
On the other hand - There are the Bohemians: The group that LOVE freedom of speech and freedom of expression who eschew arbitrary restrictions on the same. They enjoy the Forum's random and quirky experience and look forward to each day (and especially night) because they never know what random funny (albeit off-topic, potentially off-color,) REAL unfiltered thread is going to pop up (within BULLSHITTM guidelines.) They aren't here to hurt others. they are here for fun! Anyone's type of fun! Not the same old drivel that gets pumped out in moderated forums all over the planet...but yet...not as potentially harmful as other wild-wild-west-style forums.
So: I say again: "Be sure you know what you are asking for" I would like to direct those of you who have made it this far into the post who are also either residents of the United States orfamiliar with its culture to seriously consider the ramifications of limiting speech and expression. The United States has Freedom of Speech, yet we are not allowed to yell "Fire" in a movie theater or do things like threaten violence upon a President" and things of the sort.... in general, things that can harm others... (NOTICE: I did not say "offend", "bore", "annoy", "irritate", etc.) ...it's a "live and let live" society. There are **plenty of things that bother me about our culture, some things DEEPLY offend me... but I would never want the government to silence those people because of what happens when that starts (and all of you that are 6th grade and above know what I'm talking about).
In closing; I'd like to say,
Thank you for reading this far.
Please consider carefully what you ask for when you ask for increasing moderation
IF meh.com does become a sanitized woot.com type forum. Rest assured all the people that bother you will not go away... most will... but soon there will be others who play "mostly" within the forum rules and will find loop-holes to annoy you until that loophole is closed... and it will continue that way until even @thumperchick won't find anything remotely funny or interesting except perhaps the product descriptions since they are prepared and approved by the authorities. It will happen. Conversely, it's not all tulips and roses for the Bohemians - you may be offended if you read a thread (yes even I have been offended on this site, but I've never told you!) Some of your sacred cows might be slaughtered. You might find long-attention-whoring-preachy-off-topic posts to be BORING. But you never would want that type of sophomoric behavior banned, because, you realize that there are days when you would like to just hang out with a few people and shoot the shit. Each type of forum has advantages and disadvantages but realize THERE IS NO HAPPY MEDIUM Thanks.
PS: Here's a funny video I found as an illustration: Group 1(Idealists) should NOT watch this:
@er1c What caused me to make my initial comment was that I read it as a nonsense sentence with absolutely no meaning followed by three question marks (which is exactly what it was come to think of it). To me it came across as you throwing a spitwad at the wall and then looking at the rest of the community for a comment. Just looking - not saying anything about it - just standing there - staring at us - waiting for someone to say something - standing - waiting - standing - waiting.........
@unixrab "Only a Sith deals in absolutes." I dunno, I think there can be a happy medium. I was getting tired of all the posts of just "meh" or "bath" on the product pages, but if people keep it funny I'm still happy to see it, like @Foxborn's example on another page. Even if it's something stupid, but more than those abused words. I've enjoyed seeing @Barney expand the replies given to colors, particularly when we can see that account is clearly not a bot, or even @jrwofuga's posts. They're basically always the same, but he doesn't always seem to show up, so maybe that's why he still entertains me when he does. As long as it's in some way entertaining, interesting, or informative (even if not everyone finds it entertaining or interesting) I'm ok with it, and I think that's largely been the standard here and I don't get the feeling that's really going to change. Something that's obviously trying to hijack or disrupt the product thread is annoying, but I don't think it's been a major problem (maybe growing some, though, and the higher-ups wanted to nip it in the bud). As for threads like this that are clearly off-topic, I don't understand why people get up in arms about this. They're usually clearly off-topic from the title, and if you come in and didn't realize it's off-topic, leave. If you don't say anything and most people don't find it interesting, informative, entertaining, or funny, it'll soon slide down the topic list page to oblivion. I personally like a lot of the off-topic stuff, but maybe that's why I always hung out in the Everything But Woot part of the Woot forums.
@unixrab "Moderated to death" vs. "let your inner /b out" is a false dichotomy. I've seen lots of healthy happy moderated places -- John Scalzi's and Ta-Nehisi Coates's comment communities for two.
@unixrab I just named two. A third would be SomethingAwful, where moderation level varies by thread, but in at least some threads people can be hilarious without being assholes. Edit: Whatever you think about SomethingAwful, it is a moderated community and is by no means mealy-mouthed.
@er1c First I'm not, nor was I ever "angry" about your post, that would be just silly of me. I guess I was thinking of the following in JonT's recent post when I made my comment, " If you’re just going to post “meh” you should really think again – why is it meh? -snip- You gotta give us something." - I took the three ???'s as not giving 'us' anything and thus my initial comment :)
@cleverogre Thank you for teaching me something new today. I'm now decided to use, like even want to go/do/look more. Will have to share this awesomeness with my unenlightened friends and will let them know that you and @er1c are to thank for it.
Have you ever had a dream that you, um, you had, your, you, you could, you’ll do, you, you wants, you, you could do so, you , you’ll do, you could, you, you want, you want them, to do you so much, you could do anything?
@The_Baron No, sorry, can't say I've ever had a dream where I, um, I had, mine, I, I could, I'll do, I, I wants, I, I could do so, I, I'll do, I could, I, I want, I want them, to do me so much, I could do anything. But thanks for asking.
@Cinoclav Just the other day it was announced that they have learned how to unfry an egg. I am sure they'd be willing to try it out on your brain cells if need be...
Willfully attempting to wast people's time with meaningless bullshit is a passive aggressive form or trolling. Being defensive about it is just icing on the cake. Can we get a block user function?
@er1c Interesting response. Since you didn't in any way address the point and just post the old "well you didn't have to click" argument, that would seem to be a tacit admission of trolling. Carry on.
@Headly thinks: "hmmm this thread subject makes no sense... I shall click on it" @Headly reads nonsense @headly admonishes OP.
Clicking and reading something is your choice... don't pooh pooh it. That's inserting yourself into a thread that doesn't interest you & has nothing to do with you. EVERY SINGLE THREAD DOES NOT HAVE TO CATER TO/INTEREST YOU [ that's kinda trollish ]
@unixrab LoL. I guess I hit struck a nerve. Maybe it bothers you more than is should? You'll note that I didn't actually call anyone out with my original post. This is an open forum, right? Hey, if people want to waste time posting 6 year old internet memes, no skin of my noes. I got a rocket launch to watch. Carry on!
I get it - you're just testing @JonT aren't you?
@ilovereality I think he was one of the reasons for the rule clarification....
@PurplePawprints I think you are so right.
@PurplePawPrints @ilovereality @katblue Is that Korean?
@PurplePawprints No, that rule clarification was on the basis of bashing and personal attacks AFAIK. JonT <3s cat gifs.
@er1c I just reread it and it says nothing about that. It does however, say 'no trolling'. @PurplePawprints - ^This.
@PurplePawprints Oh! I'm sorry. I didn't know ALL of the conversation on this website is relevant to ecommerce or deals! Silly human.
@er1c @unixrab
@PurplePawprints preach
@er1c
speak of the devil and he appears
@unixrab *11 hours later
@unixrab wait..I am confused again..I thought we agreed in other thread that @jont was the devil? ;)
TL;DR: YOU'RE IN ONE GROUP OR ANOTHER AND BOTH HAVE CONSEQUENCES. CHOOSE WISELY
@er1c @purplepawprints @Kdemo @katblue

@Ignorant It took me 11 hours to type! :-)
@mikibell Pretty sure that @joelmw labeled me Satan of Meh
@unixrab TL;DR
@lisaviolet yeah right... busybody ;-) however: I did include the top line for you xx oo
@unixrab Yeah, like you read everything I post. lol

@ilovereality You make it sound like if I had called the thread "Question" than wrote the questions in the thread body you'd be less angry.
@unixrab "Moderated to death" vs. "let your inner /b out" is a false dichotomy. I've seen lots of healthy happy moderated places -- John Scalzi's and Ta-Nehisi Coates's comment communities for two.
@Ignorant HEADSHOT
@unixrab you missed me so much, that you dragged my name up in another thread to put words in my mouth? I'm flattered.
@lisaviolet i do
@Thumperchick
@jqubed i am a Sith (called Darth Rab at work) (true story)
@madamehardy i be never seen any unless you're including sites that are about one specific topic.

@cwolfpack3 I really can't tell if you are being sarcastic or serious.
@cleverogre both? The meme appeals to my quirky sense of humor and I'd never heard of it before.
I have..!

Every day.
Good boy, Danny.
@SSteve Right in the lumber yard.
@SSteve me no, you do.

Er1c actually Jayden Smith?
Your posts are slowly killing my brain cells. Stop slowly killing my brain cells. Stop. Just. Stop.
@Cinoclav I'm sure your brain cells are fine; calm down.
@Cinoclav Just the other day it was announced that they have learned how to unfry an egg. I am sure they'd be willing to try it out on your brain cells if need be...
@Kidsandliz It was how to unboil an egg...
@Kidsandliz i read that!! fascinating!
@er1c oops - you are right
