I’ve been to NZ but I don’t know anyone there. It’s a beautiful country full of nice people, I’m sorry this tragedy has come to them. I especially hope the wonderful Middle Eastern family in Rotorua that treated us to a great evening in their family restaurant is all right.
Friends of my officemate moved to NZ a couple of weeks prior to our election. Last week, they were expressing relief at dodging the fallout and other BS resulting from the election.
Now, they are not so happy about being there. (They survived without injury or any significant property damage.)
My Sister is more inland, and everything is OK. Seems to be a 10 mile coastal thing. EMS and other Services are doing a fantastic job. I got worried about my Sister for a second, but, she, like every other New Zealander, is pulling together.
I’ve been on South Island for the past week, but I was well south of the Christchurch/Kiakora area and felt nothing. Some coastal towns 50 or more km north of Christchurch are isolated, unreachable by car due to severed roads, and they are talking about evacuating tourists stuck there, etc. But all in all, much less damage (and fewer deaths: 2) with this one than associated with the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, due to the fact that the recent one was located much further from higher population density areas (like Christchurch) and was a deeper quake.
All my family is okay! A little shaken up but okay.
@hollboll
I don’t get it…
@PlacidPenguin My family is all okay.

wow…
Sister and three nieces (and families) in NZ. Haven’t heard from them yet, but all are in North Island, so likely OK.
