Woot is currently selling one of these electric skateboardy things. Pretty good price @ $220 (+ tax). If it actually works.
Can anyone give a review or comment for its use by a teenager (or perhaps a nutty adult/parent)?
Over a decade ago I had a gas powered skateboard like this:
Thing was a damn death trap. One of my friends took off the air cleaner and said it should be faster, and sent me off to find out how fast it was. It was faster all right, and got into a high speed wobble that wound up with me going down hard and flailing with one foot stuck in the foot loop. Surprised I didn’t break anything, but walked away with a knot on the back of my head the size of a softball.
The next thing I did was sell it.
Lesson learned: those things are for kids, and I’m not a kid any more.
@djslack I saw a guy riding one of those to a liquor store. Made sense. It looked like it would be tough to ride away carrying all of the booze that he bought, but I think he had a lot of practice.
@djslack Yikes. These electric ones generally top out @ 12-15mph; that seems about normal skateboard speed.
In any case, a helmet would be helpful, if not mandatory.
@Pavlov Yeah, I ran across these a while back - really nice design. But there’s no way I’m dropping that kind of coin on a toy vehicle unless it can replace my car for commuting. I’m only 3.6mi from home to office, but the traffic in between would be crazy for this or even a bike.
Plus, my current 10min ride would turn into 30min. And it’s been known to be hot as a blast furnace here at times. I blame the summer goats.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I see ZERO reference to this passing UL 2272 standards.
NOT RECOMMENDED.
@narfcake
Well I mean, Sears is selling this, so…
I bet it only runs on 20 D batteries too.

@compunaut
Weirdly designed skateboards go well with excellent health insurance.

@Ignorant Good read, though this is a slightly different model: belt- vs. direct-drive (like the old turntable argument!).
https://boostedboards.com - best board, but over a grand.

I don’t have the balance for these contraptions, but it’s the same price at walmart with free shipping. https://www.walmart.com/ip/ACTON-30004-Blink-Lite-Electric-Skateboard-Black/54833653
or cheaper and comes with a backpack (same price without membership) at sam’s club with free shipping. http://www.samsclub.com/sams/acton-blink-lite-sb-backpack-bundle/prod20943998.ip
@Pantheist I’ll bet the sellers at Amazon Market (or whatever it’s called) aren’t too happy with this price since it undercuts them by over 40%
