Hanger Games: Are cashews nuts ... or not?
10Going to draw back the curtain just a little bit and give everybody here in the forum an exclusive behind the scenes glimpse of what the CS Team is abuzz over today.
By that, I mean I’m going to unceremoniously throw this grenade to all of YOU here to try and hash out a solution.
It’s kind of driving us, well … nuts. Or seeds grown on the outside of fruits. WHATEVER.

I think they are technically legumes.
I’m still with my vote: cashews are apples
@riskybryzness The cashew tree ALSO produces apples, yes.
Cashews, almonds, and peanuts are not nuts. And tomatoes are not vegetables. But cereal in milk is soup.
@rockblossom Soup is not food.
@lisaviolet My soup is food. String cheese-in-a-can is not food, nor is CoolWhip. Candy corn is definitely not food. But good soup is good food.
@lisaviolet @rockblossom Cool whip is gross. My dog likes cheese in a can.
@rockblossom Agree on all points.
@rockblossom Nope.
@lisaviolet @RiotDemon @rockblossom so does mine, I put it in his kong toy and he loves it!!
@lisaviolet
@lisaviolet @RiotDemon @rockblossom Want to know what Cool Whip is good for? Ice cream cake icing. You need something that can refreeze and thaw well. Just don’t put in on too thick.
@tinamarie1974 I bought a can of kong cheez and found out that it’s just cheez wiz with a new label so now I buy cheap store brand cheez.
@sammydog01 CoolWhip is sweetened whipped plastic, so It would be good icing on a plastic cake in Barbie’s house.
@RiotDemon my vet actually has the cheapo can cheese to distract the doggies while they get shots, toe nail trims, etc. She is the one that gave me the idea. I am still buying the kong PB b/c I cannot find regular PB in a can.
@RiotDemon So … wait … you buy imitation imitation cheese-in-a-can?
@RiotDemon @rockblossom
I think the proper expression is “Hol up”, not “So …wait”.

@lisaviolet That was going to be my answer too. @Weboh posted all about cashew fruits.
Well…
What something is botanically, is not necessarily how you eat it.
Tomatoes are botanically a fruit
But we eat them like a vegetable
Same with Avocados. You’re not putting them in your fruit salad.
I mean, coffee also comes from a fruit tree, ya know…
“Coffee comes from the seeds of a small tree in the genus Coffea and although somewhat surprising, is considered a fruit. The plant is a tree with evergreen leaves and a main stem that can grow up to 10 meters tall when growing in the wild.”
@Cerridwyn
Well then I guess people can justify 9 servings of coffee a day or something
/image jittery from too much coffee
@Kidsandliz
/giphy winner winner
@Cerridwyn I do frequently concede points of argument on the basis of cultural impact or syntheses through that lens. Like the technical outlie of them is well established but people’s everyday interaction with a certain item or topic is almost ALWAYS far removed from the annals of the lab or institutional norms. +1
I thought they were drupes
cashew is not a nut. tomatoes are a fruit. cereal is a soup. hot dogs on a bun is a sandwich.
fight me.
@carl669 Then what’s a taco?
@GetClosure hard or soft shell? if soft, flour or corn tortilla?
@carl669 @GetClosure
soft shell flour - it’s fucking delicious
@carl669
/giphy fight’s you
@Cerridwyn @GetClosure soft shell flour, then genus sandwich, species wrap.
@carl669 Separate foodstuffs into some binomial nomenclature system! That’s BRILLIANT! Species, phylum, CLASS EVEN?!
We need to work on publication. POST HASTE!
@GetClosure dammit man! i just down a two martini rabbit hole trying to actually come up with a system.
@carl669 One of my FAVORITE books: “Stray Shopping Carts of Eastern America” .
Would be a good goto for inspiration.
@GetClosure if it wasn’t $40, i would have bought this book.
@carl669 I didn’t realize it because niche!
Maybe a field guide for foodtype identification is what I was thinking. Like:
“S1-type, True Sandwich: Hoagie, Traditional”
"S2-type, True Sandwich: Hoagie, Non-conventional contents and/or bun.
“L1-type, Sandwich-like: Taco, Tortilla Shell, Hard/Soft”
“L2-type, Sandwich-like: Taco, Non-Tortilla shell and/or non-conventional contents”
“F1-type, Sandwich-like: Freeform, contents confined by bread, Unclassified”
I fear/delight that this is growing beyond this thread.
@GetClosure i feel like we may need to be more careful when defining confining items like bread or tortilla.
“F1-type, Sandwich like: Freeform, contents confined by flour based delivery vessel, Unclassified”
but you’re right, this may warrant its own thread and/or website.
@carl669 Very good observation! I concur with that idea very much.
I’ll see if I can post an expanded thread with some formatting examples, ideas a little later!
@carl669 @GetClosure This may be the first step towards Star Trek’s food replicator. You need to categorize it before you can replicate it.
