Bidding may exceed $50 million for recording of stage musical made in 2016
“Hamilton” may be coming to movie theaters, exactly as audiences saw it on Broadway.
Hollywood studios are currently bidding for the big-screen rights to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit musical about founding father Alexander Hamilton, according to people involved in sales talks. But in an unusual twist, the “Hamilton” movie won’t be a filmed adaptation. Instead, it is a recording of the show made in 2016 with its original cast, including Mr. Miranda in the lead role.
The world-wide theatrical rights for “Hamilton” could sell for more than $50 million, two of the people with knowledge of the deal talks said. Representatives for the production have recently screened the recording for interested buyers.

…
But studios are betting “Hamilton” may be a special case. A massive hit and a cultural phenomenon, it has grossed nearly $400 million in New York since opening in 2015, according to Broadway World. It has won 11 Tony Awards, including best musical, as well as a Grammy and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It has long played to packed houses on Broadway, despite an average ticket price of $229, and plays in Chicago and London. A U.S. tour began last year.
…
According to some reports, massive multi-camera film-production-quality recordings have already been made in 2016, of the existing NYC stage show, on successive nights.
Netflix and Amazon are rumored to be interested in the rights, as well are traditional film production and distribution companies.
If this filmed stage musical came to the big screen near me, I guess I’d happily go see it.
I would also go see a film-theater presentation of this musical, broadcast live.

@ChadP Here you go!
I would totally go see this. I haven’t been able to catch it on stage.
I’m planning to catch this both in Dallas and New Orleans next year…but would LOVE to see it in the theater!!!
Hamilton Is heading to the movies? I didn’t know he was still alive.
@OnionSoup
I’d even go to the local movie theater to see this. Over and over. Then I need the album. Thanks!
I cannot get enough of this music. And it does not fit my normal musical tastes at all. I normally dislike both musicals and rap/hip hop. But I can’t get this music out of my head. I hope this becomes a reality!
@luvche21 I bought the mixtape when it came out. It’s changed my perception of hip-hop. Then Miranda did the ‘Hamildrops’ (his lyrics, music by others.) Here’s Ben Franklin’s song, not on the original. Variety has a good backstory.
@luvche21 Youtube has many of the Mixtape videos. I particularly like ‘Immigrants (We Get the Job Done)’.
@OldCatLady Thanks for the links!
@luvche21 I guess this time two wrongs do make a right haha
@stardate820926 ha, good point!
In that first picture, it kind of looks like he’s holding a rubber chicken.
Could be Hank’s changed up his act?
I am super excited about this. Like… crazy happy.
@debraae So am I. I’m still trying to get Hamilton tickets. Been listing to Hamilton soundtrack on Spotify and I love it!
@Enigma I’ve been lucky enough to see it 3 times; twice in Los Angeles and once in Orange County. It’s AMAZING. Like…usually the hype for things makes actually seeing it a let-down, but that is NOT the case with this. I hope you get to see it live!!!
Hmmm… I’ll wait until it’s on Netflix.
