I gave up right before the correct word! I did really good with 15 trys then just got stuck. So close and yet SO far! Thanks for posting this game/riddle or whatever it’s officially called, i’m just bummed that I have to wait until tomorrow to try again! Of course i’m going back to try my skills on the harder word! Thanks again for the cool new thingy!
BTW; I’m not even a gamer kind of girl! …jus sayen.
It took me more guesses (18) than everyone here who got it it, but substantially less than the average time (39 s)
I don’t think that was a conscious decision on my part (trying to optimize speed versus minimize guesses), but I did get start to get antsy if it took me more than a second or two to type the next word.
@DennisG2014 There’s a bit of vocabulary skill involved, especially in the hard category, as only valid words are allowed for guesses and when you get past the first four letters it gets tricky to keep coming up with real words. A little bit.
Yes. I think once you understand the process, your time will improve to a certain extent until you reach a limit based on typing time vs blunt luck in word choices. Sudoko or solving a Rubik’s cube is sort of like that. If you understand the mechanics, it makes it easier.
(wish I knew the overall parameters for the word though… 3 letters, 4, 5? That could be a big difference in my word choice/guess)
@tinamarie1974 likewise. All the ones I posted above are my legit attempts. I only found out you could “cheat” accidentally when I was doing some other stuff at the same time and had to shut down my browser at work.
@mike808@stolicat normal, but I keep meaning to hit up a real paper dictionary at the house to see what the median word actually is. (as well as the intermediate ones from there) Just because a letter is in the ‘middle’ of the alphabet doesn’t necessarily mean there are an equal amount of words before or after that letter.
You flew through that one! I think i only got it twice in one minutes time. I am totaly addicted to this now. I go back through the calender an play weeks worth of words at a time. It’s AWSOME!! Thanks to whoever posted this game, you rock!!
Someone smarter here can correct me, but assuming you used a binary search algorithm of sorts and assuming there are approx. 170,000 words in the Oxford Dictionary, it should take a maximum of 18 guesses to find the correct word? Granted this is assuming no human errors in using this method, but it is interesting to think how little that number is.
@TrevorAM Having a good vocabulary to start with gives you an idea of the spelling distribution of words which is not exactly a binary search in a strict sense. Words are constrained by vowels and letter pairs for the most part as well.
@Kidsandliz Yes, i spent what could be considered “too much time” trying to build a tree of guesses, with no luck . I originally thought starting with a word beginning with “M” would be correct too, but now i am curious how the alphabet might skew either direction (i.e. more words start with “A” than “Z”).
@TrevorAM I was mostly thinking of Ma only because there is no word M. Actually thinking about it we could start with I for the same reason - no other word starting with I is shorter. I don’t think M is in the middle. I was mostly trying to figure out how to eliminate and entire alphabet litter and either to the right or left of it. There is, as you say, probably some systematic way to figure this out. Calling Watson!!
