Great , Hurricane Harvey last month and now this..I blame the Goat
8So parents home was flooded and they lost their car too in the recent Hurricane Harvey disaster in a suburb north of Houston. I realize that was last month but it foreshadows this months latest ‘event’.
I was stranded in Houston (during Harvey’s torrential rains) and tried to get home but IH-10 east was under water, as were all highways to my hometown, including highway 90. My parents were rescued by several heroic men (in a canoe with their small dog) and I managed to pick them up after they were rescued before the Grand Parkway toll road flooded over too.
When I couldn’t get to my home from Houston (spouse was stuck inside our home for over 5 days before the water receded ), I took my parents to my daughters home and we stayed there for several days. Her subdivision was also surrounded by flood waters and finally, after 4 days, I was able to drive my parents out of the area to the greater Austin area. Consequently, we have been staying here in this area ever since Harvey!
Long story short, mom had fallen several times after the hurricane hit so she is currently staying in an assisted living facility right now. They are trying to get her rehabilitated so that she can walk again on her own. Dad and I checked into a hotel (they lost their car so dad needs me to drive him around this area) and we have been staying at this hotel for weeks since my parents home flooded. Their home still isn’t livable and we have been working to get a contractor to start trying to repair all the damage to their home. Thankfully, we had kind volunteers tear out the damaged Sheetrock, insulation, cabinets etc. in their home but my parents can’t go home until their home is rebuilt.
Anyways, to top it all off, yesterday , well technically now the day BEFORE yesterday, we were told by the hotel employees’ at the hotel we have been staying at, that everyone in the hotel had to leave immediately! This is where the GOAT blame game comes in --they wouldn’t tell us exactly what was wrong but I heard from another guest it had to do with the pool. That didn’t make sense to me so I googled possible things so dangerous that an entire hotel could be shut down that involved water. Well.after researching this matter I even posted on my FB account my suspicion of what the problem could be. I even called the local health department this morning to find out why the hotel we had been staying at was closed. They declined to answer my question but tonight (well last night now) on the local TV station my suspicions of what I thought it might be were confirmed and what I posted on FB I thought it might be was right…People have contracted Legionnaire disease at the hotel we have been staying at, thus the reason the health department closed it down!

Really not a joking matter at all but I am trying to be optimistic about the situation especially since I had to take my elderly dad to a dr. this morning BEFORE we knew why the hotel we were staying at was closed. He hasn’t been feeling well for several days…Geez is all I can say

Gosh way too many hard things happening to you, your parents… I hope it is just he is not feeling well for other reasons.
@Kidsandliz me too my friend - a bit overwhelming at times I’ll admit -
Ouch… That’s a lot to take blame for.
Hope your dad is ok and everything starts looking up.
@RiotDemon yes a little harsh but went to Meh for my comic relief so hope you don’t mind —
@attyvette So sorry for all the calamities and setbacks you and your family have had to deal with recently.
Here’s hoping to an uneventful rest of the year.
@dashcloud thanks for the kind words — we need a break, that’s for sure !
Here’s hoping that all will end up well for you and your parents.
@narfcake thanks my friend. This is definitely a marathon event not a sprint
@AttyVette Sorry to hear of your string of misfortune! I had to opportunity to go to Houston twice and volunteer with CrisisCleanup.org. I was one of the thousands all doing to same thing. I am glad your parents were helped, hopefully it prevented the issue from ballooning with the mold! Good luck on NOT getting Legionnaires disease!
@tightwad , First of all, I want to thank you for volunteering to help others who have lost their homes and their cars, just like my parents did. There have been so many wonderful people (like yourself) who have helped people who were affected by Hurricane Harvey ( Hurricanes Ike and Maria as well) like my parents were. The need is still great all over Texas ( Florida and Puerto Rico too).Thank you again for caring about others— people like you are my heroes!
@AttyVette
Wow.
I hope you have people in Austin and in the Houston area who can help with putting things back together. I sure hope your dad and you are ok and that your mom recovers.
@f00l thanks for the kind response— son lives in Pflugerville and daughter lives near Humble- and brother lives in Spring and is meeting with a contractor at their home today. Unfortunately, there is mold in the house as the kitchen and bathroom cabinets (and some furniture) wasn’t removed for awhile . The contractor already told brother that after they begin work on the house, it will be 6 to 8 weeks before they finish and that doesn’t count cabinets being ordered and then installed ( nor does it count flooring being replaced throughout the house ) .
I know it is tough on everyone who has lost homes, possessions and their vehicles. But my mom just isn’t grasping the enormity of the situation because in their area, as a lot of people are in the same or similar situation ( no flood insurance or insurance on their property inside the home). She thinks that we should be able to get their home rebuilt in a week at most and I told her that isn’t realistic!
