Good job Amazon.

But there was this gem of a response on Ars:
qazwart
I actually expected Amazon’s email to end like this:
Quote:
Frequently leaked together: …
Sponsored leaks related to this leak: …
Customers exposed in this leak were also exposed on: …
@blaineg don’t forget the comparison table of this leak and other similar leaks
@blaineg @stolicat I’m waiting for them to ask me to rate my leak, indicate if the leak was a gift, and whether I want my leak to be used for future recommendations.
More technical glitches with streaming services.
I’m sorry I missed it. I would have loved watching an episode of Dr. Who set in the 17th Century with the captions from another episode about robots (and technical glitches) set in the future. I just hope someone, somewhere, recorded the whole thing with captions on.
A bit OT, but Amz related…
Catching up with an old associate this afternoon. She is in a situation which nets her (usually) reliable information from the Amz inner sanctum.
A couple things Amz is reportedly evaluating in a “how and when can we implement this” stage:
Free Prime shipping becomes “best way” (read: slow sampan) for orders less than $25
Prime Video programming with commercials, and an option to pay for Prime Video upgrade without commercials
I guess $130/yr Prime isn’t performing to the overlord’s satisfaction, and this is how Amz makes more profit without increasing subscription fees again.
100% rumor at this point, but from what has proven a very reliable source in the past.
@ruouttaurmind - When we first started with Amazon, we got everything we ordered within two days. Then they introduced Prime, and until we got it, it was taking three days or more to get anything. Then we got Prime, and for a year or so we got everything within two or three days. For the past year, though, it’s been taking three days or more to get anything.
@ruouttaurmind One has to wonder how much is enough when a company is making 852gazillion and have to gouge you some more.
@lseeber I wonder if Bezos actually sees a ceiling, or is so focused on what’s beyond that ceiling he’s going to splat on it while reaching for the sun.
Like Achilles, the hero who forgot his heel, or like Icarus who, flying close to the sun, forgot that his wings were made of wax, we should be wary when triumphant ideas seem unassailable, for then there is all the more reason to predict their downfall.
@ruouttaurmind So, they like the Hulu model and are considering a pivot to that? Pay for commercials, and pay extra for no commercials.
@dashcloud This. If Prime didn’t already come with a premium price, I wouldn’t balk. But for $130/yr I’m not tryin’ ta watch commercials too. Their website is already saturated with ads and search result manipulation. Next, will I have to watch a sponsored video before I can view a product listing? Or maybe my Audible books will have “limited commercial interruptions”?
@ruouttaurmind The “Amazon recommends” has become a joke. That “recommendation” shows up even on search terms that return a single result.
@blaineg No, it makes perfect sense. Amazon recommends… you search for something else so they can better manipulate your purchase!
@ruouttaurmind Oh yea, I know Amazon’s primary interest is Amazon, not me. But I’ll use them as long as they are useful to me.
Here’s a helpful hack. Append this to a search results URL to sort it by review rank AND the number of reviews. That helps filter out the “single 5 star review” results.
&sort=review-count-rank
@blaineg Thank you! That will be very helpful.
Now if only there was a way to filter out the sponsored products when sorting…
I just got my love note from amazon…
Oops, I guess.
