Goat Day 8: Achievement Unlocked
11For years, I’ve always wanted to be able to plant something, anything really, and have it not die. I was always scared to take up a new hobby, especially one that I knew nothing about. I grew tired of always wanting to do it, but just letting the summer slip away. This year, I just did it (no Nike affiliation).
Maintaining a vegetable garden is no joke, especially when you are starting from nothing. I wanted to plant a large variety of things, and just see what grew. After a lot of research, I decided to make a “Square Foot Garden”, which is basically cramming a lot of stuff in a tiny space.
I grew all my plants from seed (although I started a little late in the season), and had mixed results, but the important thing is, I have results.
Rather than show you the garden, here are a few things I made today with some of the ingredients that I have a ton of. In addition to this, I’ve got peppers, squash, zucchini, green onions, beans, carrots, and some other stuff I can’t remember.
Garden Salad:
Cucumber Salad (Pretty much just vinegar/sugar/tomatoes/dill/red onion)
Cucumber version of Tam Mak Hoong (Spicy)
I ran into some issues, like thrips, bottom rot, Japanese beetles, and these fat nasty tomato worms:
With each problem, came a lesson, which I will use for many growing seasons to come.
Do you have any recently acquired skills or accomplishments you are proud of? Or do you have any gardening tips for me?

I tried to have a garden. Anything that grew ended up being for the rabbits or squirrels.
I gave up.
@narfcake
Did any of the squirrels have a green hat?
@PlacidPenguin Nope, though I’m pretty sure one that didn’t have a mouth flipped me off.

Started thinking about HTF.

Planting from seeds can be rough. My wife is an excellent gardener and so is her mother, but they still struggle sometimes starting from seeds. Our location is very hot and sunny though, so that makes a big difference here, since it tends to burn out a lot of young plants.
Nice looking veggies! We had some wonderful Japanese cucumbers turn out this year, super crisp and tasty. Hoping our raspberries will go strong!
@luvche21 Most of it was started indoors under some cheap LED lights since we have a shortish growing season. I think cucumbers and squash/zucchini were the only ones I sowed directly.
@lichme that’s a good idea if you have the space. Plus cucumbers and zucchini do really well from seeds too. Our zucchini last year grew all on its own, we didn’t even sow a seed… Then it grew huge and gave us 42 giant zucchini.
We can barely keep a potted basil plant from Sprouts alive

@compunaut About 4 months ago, my work put on a lunch class on how to grow succulent plants. I signed up because I thought it was about food that tasted good (I was wrong). They provided us with everything needed.
I no longer have a succulent plant, couldn’t keep it alive. At least I use the container they gave us to hold my cherry/grape tomatoes in on the counter.
I’m just starting my own garden. I’ve killed many a tomato plant in the past. I have no tips really. I went to my local library and picked up a couple of books specifically for Florida gardeners. I also have watched what feels like a million hours of gardening videos on YouTube.
My personal favorite I’ve found is an Australian guy named Mark. His voice is very soothing and I find his videos interesting even if I don’t necessarily want to grow what he’s showing. He says his climate is very similar to Florida.

Hopefully in a few months I’ll have some produce to show.
