Goat Day #7: Music, Then and Now
8I’m not gonna lie. For the most part, music I listen/know about to is on radio. I’m not hip or with it when it comes to artists/bands. Occasionally, somebody will recommend a band or song to me. I’ve come across several of my favorites that way. I like a good easy tune.
If I am listening to a generic playlist, it’s going to be 80’s Pop, or Top Country. If I’m listening to an individual artist, it’s going to be Jack Johnson (I liked him before he was cool, and even caught his show).
My favorite song growing up/during high school:
Not current, by still currently my favorite song:
Favorite song to sing in the car by myself
What’s your go to song? Anything that you would recommend? Link it below, and I’ll try to give it a listen.

Rush. Always Rush when I need a go-to or pick-me-up. Favorite band since I was 11. I buck the norm with my favorite song of theirs. It’s Manhattan Project, which somehow seems fitting in the chaos of today’s world.
I still love superman’s dead… great song design.
Here is some new(ish) musics for ya
@thismyusername I feel like somehow I’ve been brainwashed after watching the 2nd video.
@lichme Big Ballet knows no bounds… be vigilant.
Anything David Bowie. Golden Years is probably my favorite though.
I love a LOT of different music, but I’m getting kinda old so most of my favorites probably won’t be very recent.
First into my head is Billy Joel’s Piano Man: it’s like a 5 minute screenplay, with multiple fleshed-out characters. Amazing.

I’m a big fan of New Orleans music: jazz, funk, brass band. The rollicking piano of Big Chief by Professor Longhair defies you not to get up and strut/swing to your own second line.

Love Bruce Springsteen - my first college roommate introduced me to his music in 1981. I really like Glory Days, another example of ‘story song’, but my favorite is Open All Night from the Nebraska album. The simplest rock song imaginable, but that driving solo rhythm guitar combined with those evocative lyrics can give me goosebumps.

I’m also interested in big band music; probably a consequence of playing in concert band and/or orchestra starting in 4th grade until I graduated from college. My fave is Sing, Sing, Sing (with a Swing) by the Benny Goodman Orchestra. The Grammy-winning version released in 1937 is almost 9 minutes long, taking up both sides of a 12in, 78rpm record (practically unheard of at the time). The ‘complete, definitive’ version recorded at Carnegie Hall in 1938 clocked in at 13min! Love the ‘short’ version, too
/youtube Sing Sing Sing - Benny Goodman
TL;DR: There’s tons of great music out there!
@compunaut Piano Man was the second song on keyboard that I learned to play, after Eric Clapton’s Tears in Heaven.

Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiich!
this doesn’t have any words, but it’s one of my go to songs when i’m pumped up.
@carl669 Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarl. I like it, although there are several parts where I could swear it’s the beginning of where the vocals should start… but then the don’t.
@carl669 @lichme some San Antonio metal
@2many2no @lichme and here’s some Indian street metal
@2many2no @carl669
And here is some periodic metal (in yellow)
I worked in a music store as a young adult. I really do enjoy all styles of music (there are some things I don’t consider to be music). Everything from Bluegrass to Country, to Rap and everything in between. Queen is probably my all-time favorite band. Freddy Mercury is, hands-down, the greatest songwriter of all time.
When I was in my early 20s, I had a friend that insisted I start listening to ska. I was familiar with it, but after going to Ska-is-Dead tour, I fell in love with it. Something about the off-beat tempo makes me want to dance (and I’m not the dancing type). Since then, I’ve traveled all over the US to see my favorite bands. My favorite is probably Streetlight Manifesto. Tomas Kalnoky might be the best song writer since Freddy, but he doesn’t have the vocals that Mercury had.
They’re worth checking out. I honestly didn’t like this album when it first came out, but it grew on me. There are so many great lyrical and musical lines
@capguncowboy I’m mixed on it. I like everything about it except the sax/trumpet, which may very well be a big part of that style of music.
@lichme it is. I admit, It’s not for everyone. They do have an acoustic version of that album if that’s more your cup-o-tea. His acoustic singing voice is definitely better than usual
/youtube toh kay
@capguncowboy Definitely something I would/will listen to in the Acoustic version. Thanks!
@capguncowboy I’m definitely liking this.
I’m very mood-dependent when it comes to music, I have favorites in all genres. It’s hard to nominate particular songs because USUALLY me liking a song depends on NOT hearing it too much. Here’s kind of a random playlist:
Morning pick-me-up : Raining Sunshine by Miranda Cosgrove
Drive-to-work: Symphony #3 in C by Charles-Camille Saint Saens
Start-work: Perfect Day by Hoku
Midmorning-work music: any 60’s+ light pop, maybe 98.6 by Keith or something by England Dan and John Ford Coley
Lunch Music: just about anything from Hang On Little Tomato by Pink Martini
Quittin’ Time: Beautiful Day by U2
Drive-Home: Ride of the Valkyries as performed by Anthony Newman
Home-post-dog-walk: Box of Rain or maybe Uncle John’s Band
Dinnertime and after: just about anything by Burt Bacharach, maybe some Trini Lopez
Bedtime: The finale music to Mystery Science Theater 3000
One of my favorite artists from the past decade is Joe Bonamassa. He’s a true guitar wizard, and can play the crap out of any guitar be it acoustic or electric and performs every style of music from blues, rock, country, bluegrass, classical and almost anything in between. Here’s a couple of my favorites…
Song of Yesterday (w/ Black Country Communion)
Woke Up Dreaming (Acoustic in Vienna)
@tohar1 I’m totally jealous of the guitar skills.
@lichme @tohar1 I love it even more with a cello (!)
/youtube Bonamassa - Woke Up Dreaming (Live At Carnegie
@compunaut @lichme That chick flat out gets after it on the cello doesn’t she? I have a good friend who was invited to the taping of that concert performance, and she said she really enjoyed Tina Guo’s playing.
@lichme @tohar1 My cousin is a professional cellist; I’ll have to remember to ask her how she likes Tina Guo.
This song inspired the Tenacious D song “The Best Song in the World.”
One
This song will melt your face off, if you have any left after the last song. I did a MAD APE DEN of it. It’s been remastered, and the remaster sounds a lot better, but this one has the music video.
HOLY WARS… THE PUNISHMENT DUE
108 time signature changes. Technically not a “song” as it’s an instrumental.
The Dance of Eternity
@Limewater Have you ever watched any of the Lost In Vegas reaction videos? They’re a couple of primarily rap guys who’ve been capturing their reactions to almost any kind of popular music that you can imagine. They are very fair “free thinkers” & offer up their honest opinions. Some of their reactions surprise the heck out of me, including their video for “Megadeth–Holy Wars”…
@tohar1 I’ve seen a couple, but not this one. I’ll have to watch it later. Thanks!
@Limewater @tohar1 Think my favorite thing is that they loved Gojira from the very first time they listened to them. Sad Mastodon didn’t strike a chord with them, though. Glad they somehow stumbled upon Oceans of Slumber.
@Limewater @ThomasF I actually enjoy these two quite a bit, to the point that I support them on Patreon.com. They are asking for only $1/month, but I’m in for $2/month. You get early access to their videos, as well as other content not available on YouTube. Though I’m primarily a “metal guy”, I do appreciate their open-mindedness, and their willingness to try anything.
@ThomasF @tohar1 OK, I watched it. It really kind of gives the song new life to hear these guys listen and enjoy it for the first time. Thanks!
I’ve only ever heard a couple of Mastodon songs. They actually didn’t really click with me, either. I’ve never listened to Gojira, but I’ll check them out.
@tohar1 Glad to be introduced to these guys. Of course I searched them listening to some Rush songs. And of course they love Rush.
@cinoclav Not sure if they’ll release it to YouTube, but on their Patreon channel they did a reaction to 2112.
@tohar1 It was on YouTube, I watched some of it.
I first heard this as hold music:
My introduction to Rai:
I love the song and the video feels very of its time:
Feels melancholy and I can’t help but sing along:
@riotdemon Post Amorphis, you coward!
@ThomasF
@ThomasF haha. I read the OP and figured it probably wasn’t up his alley. I posted Amorphis in the celebrity thread instead.
Pretty much everything that The Tea Party has released, but this is my absolute favorite.
Bedouin Soundclash is another go to
@jksquared I used to push this song (When the Night Feels my Song) on people when woot had a turntable room. It’s been a long time since I heard it. Thanks for the reminder.
I first heard Evanescence “Lost in Paradise” in the cafeteria where I work. I had to know what it was, so I used the Sound-Hound app to find out. I now own all of their albums and finally got to see them live in concert last year.
Mood dependent.
Here are a few
I should emphasize that I don’t know shit about music.
Barber, Adagio for Strings
Talking Heads, Take Me To The River (I much prefer the original arrangement)
Stones, Moonlight Mile
2 min from Howard Shore’s TLOTR: TFOTR soundtrack
(Informally known as Gandalf Falls - this music is exquisite)
If you want an hour of that, looped, it’s here
Wilson Pickett, Midnight Hour
John Coltrane Ascension
(40 min)
NIN Hurt
So many more.
The Stones list alone would be pretty long
Tumbling Dice
@f00l
I can no longer hear Take Me to the River the same again after having a Big Mouth Billy Bass
Depeche Mode are my all time favorite band. I can’t say that I have a favorite all time song (by them or any one else) but here are a few that stick with me.
Cheap Trick - I Want You To Want Me
Terrence Trent D’Arby’s version of Who’s Loving You?
Caroline’s Spine - Sullivan
Blue October - I Hope You’re Happy
If you are wanting new music from robert plant or the general led zep sound check out Greta Van Fleet
Hmmm…
It changes from day to day… Mostly music of the 60’s & 70’s.
