Goat Day #14: I'm gonna miss this
18This picture is of a bed. Pretty simple at face value, but it’s part of a routine. A very strict bed time routine.
Step 1: Read a story (her pick)
Step 2: Brush teeth (and sing Beauty and the Beast duet)
Step 3: Potty/Wash Up
Step 4: Brush Hair
Step 5: Turn Off Light/Turn On Fan
Step 6: Big Fat Hug/Big Fat Kiss/Bunny Kiss
Step 7: Tuck Into Bed
Step 8: A few pats on the back
Step 9: Say goodnight, grab the monitor, and head downstairs
Not only is the routine specific, but the details of each item are specific. When we tuck into bed, ducky HAS to be on the left side, pillow has to be facing the right way, and bunny has to be on the right side. Once we do things one way, it’s pretty much not right unless we do it that way every time.
Now, that’s not really the part I’m going to miss. I will, but it’s not at the top of the list in this routine. You see, every morning, around 1AM, then again at 5AM, she gets out of bed, picks up her bunny, ducky, and pillow, and comes into our room dragging them beside her. Normally at 1AM we send her back (it’s hard to turn away your kid when they are asking for snuggles, carrying a bunny, ducky, and pillow), and at 5AM she gets to stay until we wake up.
When she does get to stay, ducky snuggles with mommy, I get bunny, and she gets us.
While I look forward to seeing her grow up, make macaroni necklaces, do school plays, and all the other stuff that kids do, I can’t help but try to capture these little memories.
I heard a saying once, that really got to me. At some point, your parents were holding you, put you down, and never picked you back up again.
I remember as a kid, pretending to be asleep on the couch so my dad would carry me up the stairs and tuck me into bed.
What’s your earliest feel good childhood memory? If you’re a parent, what’s a warm and fuzzy story about your kids?

That’s the most adorable thing I’ve heard in weeks.
We just converted PuppyCat’s bed from crib to toddler bed. (She never did climb out.) Her plethora of friends create quite the ensemble when she decides they are all needed for cuddles.
@Thumperchick I was lucky enough not to have any escape attempts either.
@Thumperchick oh, the times when there’s actually so many friends in the bed that there’s hardly any room for the human? (Not going to lie, I got a little jealous; the stuffed animal pit looked way comfy)
Bonus Footage:
@lichme Cute little Licher.
At night my mom used to let my brother and me both pick a book to be read. He would pick random books, apparently I always picked Cinderella. My mom said it got so bad that she would try to skip pages but I would complain that it wasn’t how the story went.
@RiotDemon ahhh, the old “turn four pages at once” trick … it’s shocking how quickly they catch on to that one.
@RiotDemon My book was “If you give a mouse a cookie”.
My daughter normally picks a story from her princess book. If I have had enough of that book, I typically just offer her choices instead of giving her free reign.
Something like: “Do you want to read Pout Pout Fish, Grumpy Pants Penguin (@PlacidPenguin), or Pete the Cat”. She’ll normally still tell me she wants to read the Princess book, but on the second try she’ll choose from the options given.
The selections get rotated in and out, but we keep her favorites available.
@lichme that’s funny. I don’t think five minute stories existed when I was a kid.
I’m reminded of this song.
/youtube it won’t be like this for long
@djslack Quit it, I don’t need people at work asking my why I’m all teary eyed.
This brought tears to my eyes.
We try to collect quotes from our children. The nature of the quotes changes as the children get older. The younger they are, the weirder they tend to be.
The other day, my daughter said, “Maybe it looks like a men’s restroom because it’s a human restroom.”
Old ones I like:
“All reindeer line up in a fashionable order.”
“I’m not ready yet. I’m playing robot church.”
“I’m the strongest girl in the family, and you hurt my feelings!”
And from my son:
“I burped like a vomit hippo!”
“Meredith kissed me and I said, ‘No, Meredith, you don’t kiss me! You kiss Mommy and Daddy!’” (Meredith was a girl in his class at the time)
“Night night. Go away, Daddy.” (This one is particularly ironic because this kid is the worst sleeper in the world.)
@Limewater It amazes me how the though process of a young child works. These made me smile, as I can relate. Timing is everything. It’s hard to be mad when they do something wrong, and come back with a quote like this. Often times we have to hide our laughter.
I dread the day I don’t get any snuggles. Started
kindergarten this week!
I’m kinda new at this parenting bit - but I put the tot down every night if I can…she’ll be 15 months next week…and has moved on from “night-night cuddles” where I read her a bit of a book (she’s not really into me doing that right now at bedtime) to “rocky-rock” where I actually get to hold her and rock her for a bit while she kinda strokes her softie…all this started in the past week and while I miss the cuddle in bed time…she is wanting to be held which is something that I havent really been able to do since she became mobile…she got too independent too quickly…I’m going to miss all of this when its gone…she’s my one and only…
