Goat Day 12 - Evolution

5

While riding out Winter’s most recent rearing searching for the elusive Pomeranian, I was going through my older journal entries searching for pages not so important to burn for heat should my situation become dire enough and found a synopsis of the 1959 movie “The Cosmic Man”:

“Extraterrestrial infiltrates U.S. joint military-scholastic-industrial complex for non-destructive and unknown reasons and heals a paraplegic child before being killed attempting to leave Earth.”

This note was on the same page as some brainstorming about the technological evolution of interpersonal communication:

"Who were, or are, the first people to meet online before meeting in person?
"Also, who were, or are, the first people to meet online without ever meeting in person?
"Who were the first people to talk to each other on the telephone before meeting in person?
"USPS?
"Radio?
“Television?”

This page of my journal caught my attention because the movie synopsis reminded me of “Encounter at Farpoint,” the first episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In my opinion, that episode could have been written in response the the movie.

The brainstorming about communication technology caught my attention because the term “joint military-scholastic-industrial complex” from the synopsis reminds me of the internet and technology-based communication.

From this, further discussion notwithstanding, I’m left wondering, who were the first two people to meet only of the mind, and via which media? My guess is a couple of early humans, whose names were never written down, via smoke signals. What’s your guess?

Fortunately I did not have to burn any of my pages as the storm passed quickly, leaving behind a light, three inch coating of typical snow, and more importantly, a Pomeranian trail to follow.
