@PlacidPenguin@thismyusername I know you from my online meetings, there is always one that takes all the Q&A time to ask questions I can answer because I paid attention to the meeting.
@communist Because I shouldn’t have to. As a general rule, any site that I visit that automatically begins playing videos gets closed immediately and loses my business/page views/clicks/whatever. It’s just a matter of principle for me.
@PurplePawprints agreed. The only exception I make is YouTube. It’s like sites that think it’s cool to put background music on their site. There are very specific cases in which it’s acceptable and otherwise it’s just obnoxious.
What is truly annoying on that site is when you click on the boxes on the bottom, look at what was brought up and then scroll down to click on another one they shift around and the toggling pictures don’t help that. Hard to tell what you have looked at and what you have not. That is an irritating and confusing fail. You need to somehow “mark” which ones we have looked at during a particular visit.
@Kevin What if you, like, don’t remember until after you click and see you’ve already looked? Then when you go to find one you haven’t looked at yet it has moved again. My memory remembers things spatially best, as do some other people. Others it works in different ways. If they’d just keep the stupid things from moving around it would be easier. Then they don’t need to mark it somehow. If the plan is to keep you on the page longer, that is working. If the plan is to piss you off a bit, that is working. If the plan is to be a PITA, that is working. I find it irritating. If you don’t that is fine. And of course they can do whatever they want about this, or not. I am jus expressing my opinion.
@shop6d6ky Too much work, but thanks for the suggestion. When I visit shopping sites I skim and if they make it too hard to do this or to remember what I have already looked at I leave. Generally it isn’t like I actually need any of that crap… if I was looking for something specific at a good price I might tolerate a poorly designed site, but otherwise not.
@Kidsandliz There’s simply not enough events to make it necessary to “mark” which ones you’ve seen and which you haven’t. However, I would like to fix things “shifting around” for you but I’m not sure what you mean. The order of the events remains consistent until we manually re-order them (which happens less than 1 time a day).
There may not seem to be enough events to you. To a shopper who has visited your store, plus many others, there are way more than enough events on Morningsave.
@shawn OK here goes. Hope it makes sense. If the goal is to make a website easy, with minimal effort to see everything and not accidentally miss something, then what you have is not it. And that is annoying, requires extra effort to be sure you have seen everything, and thus increases the chances of a customer missing something or leaving the page prematurely.
Look at ‘steals on the reals’ in the screen shots below. It does not remain between the same two other boxes (using the usual convention of order which is left to right in each row, top row to bottom row in order). In one case it is between meh encore and exclusive deals as seen on the talk. In the other case it is between extra pop-ups and previous extra pop ups.
Add to that when you click on a box it temporarily disappears AND what is in the box product wise keeps changing, it makes it very hard to remember where you are in the list of boxes to see.
Suggestions
give them a “hard” location on the page
temporarily dim the box you have clicked on until you click on another one so you can look down and see where you were to then follow whatever pattern you have been using to go through the page
@Kidsandliz woot’s site does some shit like that. The order of the events keep switching as I go to one and them come back to the initial page. Annoying.
Wasn’t online on the 1st, so I didn’t know about /r/place until after seeing numerous threads on two subreddits as a result of which I did some digging.
@PlacidPenguin
No, I need to get a great one and edit in verbal instructions, so that when I get the $ to pay all the TV happy pretty faces people to make cheery endorsements of my site, those watchers who go where I encourage them to go will get off to a good start on the correct path.
I know a few physicians who might have private stashes of these educational path-guidance videos.
I’m convinced @matthew lives for the tension of the well-executed deadpan delivery. It’s an acquired taste. One that has consumed him and ruined his humanity. Bravo.
Are any of those real TV stations/programs? I’ve never heard of any of those programs and certainly wouldn’t pay $100/month to watch Mario Lopez to peddle Meh crap–
these shows like THE TALK cater to women (its basically a generic store brand version of THE VIEW) cheap to make and distributed across the country to fill time during the day
Now I get why I hadn’t heard of this place… it gets advertised on places that only air while I’m at work. If I was a lazy bum or retiree siphoning off the government, then I’d have heard of it a million times.
Reminds me of when local radio stations have audio clips of famous people saying their own names (and sometimes the station’s name) so I know I’m listening to a good station.
Wait, where do I go?
@thismyusername to hell and back??? : )
@Kidsandliz @thismyusername @woodhouse
(Twilight Zone episode entitled Dead Run)
@thismyusername MorningSave.com
What’s the URL?
@PlacidPenguin @thismyusername I know you from my online meetings, there is always one that takes all the Q&A time to ask questions I can answer because I paid attention to the meeting.
@caffeine_dude
And that one should be celebrated.
Why should anyone ever pay attention during meetings? That’s a job for the person sitting next to you.
Meh.
PSST…
I am going to let you in on a secret…
Check out MorningSave.com
@ConAndLibrarian LOL
@ConAndLibrarian Dammit! I clicked on it!
@ConAndLibrarian haha you got me
@ConAndLibrarian FAKE URL ALERT
this is the real MorningSave.com
@ConAndLibrarian gigglegigglegiggle…
That was very confusing. They needed to be clearer about the site name.
Yikes. I never realized how many daytime TV tie ins morningsave.com had. But I’m never home watching daytime TV…
@tedesj
On days when I’m home and decide to watch talk shows (when BBC America and Chiller don’t have fun stuff on), I frequently see these things.
The sad part is, I remember the episodes of some of the clips from the video.
@tedesj I despise daytime TV
@snapster what ever happened to word of mouth advertising?
@Kevin People don’t talk anymore.
@narfcake They watch other people talk. That’s what these shows are.
@craigthom @narfcake @Kevin And since everyone talks at once on those shows you can’t hear anything anyway so you really are only watching.
Is that like a “web site”?
If the main morningsave site is going to continue to have autoplay videos, I can guarantee I won’t be visiting much.
@PurplePawprints Yeah autoplay videos suck big time.
@PurplePawprints why not download a browsing extension that blocks it?
@communist Because I shouldn’t have to. As a general rule, any site that I visit that automatically begins playing videos gets closed immediately and loses my business/page views/clicks/whatever. It’s just a matter of principle for me.
@PurplePawprints agreed. The only exception I make is YouTube. It’s like sites that think it’s cool to put background music on their site. There are very specific cases in which it’s acceptable and otherwise it’s just obnoxious.
@jbartus
Yeah, Autoplay means the site is a Suckfest.
Mediocre Labs gets a bye. Sometimes. Barely.

@Kidsandliz I middle click them all on the first page, getting lotsa tabs…
@shop6d6ky Too much work, but thanks for the suggestion. When I visit shopping sites I skim and if they make it too hard to do this or to remember what I have already looked at I leave. @shawn
You’re not thinking like a shopper here.
There may not seem to be enough events to you. To a shopper who has visited your store, plus many others, there are way more than enough events on Morningsave.
@f00l you’re wrong. I can hold 8 events in my head easily.
@shawn
What about those of us with very little brain?
@shawn OK here goes. Hope it makes sense. If the goal is to make a website easy, with minimal effort to see everything and not accidentally miss something, then what you have is not it. And that is annoying, requires extra effort to be sure you have seen everything, and thus increases the chances of a customer missing something or leaving the page prematurely.

@Kidsandliz I see. The order of events isn’t the same on the homepage (https://morningsave.com) and an event’s details page (https://morningsave.com/events/the-talk-3). This will be fixed with the next deployment.
@Kidsandliz woot’s site does some shit like that. The order of the events keep switching as I go to one and them come back to the initial page. Annoying.
But I’m not an alcoholic housewife!!!
@Kevin Never give up on your dreams! Practice often, I’m sure you can become one!
This may mean that Irk will replace Mario Lopez!
So this is how it feels when an offspring actually grows up to be a doctor instead of a vagabond.
@DrunkCat I think that doctor might have dementia since it keeps repeating itself…
What is this?
“As seen on TV” crap?
I’m glad I never watch daytime TV or shopping channels.
@daveinwarsh “As seen on TV” just about always means a rip off piece of crap so that sounds about right. : )
Instructions unclear. Ended up on Pornhub.
@jbartus does pornhub also have morning show endorsements?
@communist god only knows. They certainly were present on /r/place this weekend.
@jbartus
Wasn’t online on the 1st, so I didn’t know about /r/place until after seeing numerous threads on two subreddits as a result of which I did some digging.
@PlacidPenguin
I think Pornhub, Reddit, and Wikipedia are converging.
@PlacidPenguin but you’re missing the best part in that time lapse!
@jbartus
(@mfladd - I’ll make fun of any team from that state. Provided I know what sport the team is from.)
@PlacidPenguin hater’s gonna hate. Notice the patch on the jersey.
@jbartus
I don’t hate anything. That word is too heavy.
@jbartus Yeah, good luck on your wildcard
/go pens
@PlacidPenguin Did r/trees get something together?
@jbartus You BETTER have put that into your favorites list!
@jbartus I thought the Bruins were 2nd in the Atlantic? What happened, did a better team knock them back out?
Edit: Just checked, that’s exactly what happened.
@mfladd put what in my favorites list?!
@jbartus ummmm…pornhub of course.
Who’s buying this crap?
I thought the idea was to funnel traffic from there to here?
Friggin’ autoplay videos. Fastest way to drive me away.
If I had all those bucks, I could hire all those happy TV faces to tell people in the most positive and friendly way possible to go somewhere too.
I would need some colonoscopy footage so that they wouldn’t get lost. People today have no familiarity with their own bodies anymore.
Autoplay it is.
Just this once.
@f00l
I’m confused. You want links to colonoscopy videos?
@PlacidPenguin
@PlacidPenguin Only if they autoplay.
@hanzov69
I normally hate autoplay, but for this little promo, autoplay is the only way to go.
I’m convinced @matthew lives for the tension of the well-executed deadpan delivery. It’s an acquired taste. One that has consumed him and ruined his humanity. Bravo.
First Morningsave order March 2, 2016. Been there, done that.
Are any of those real TV stations/programs? I’ve never heard of any of those programs and certainly wouldn’t pay $100/month to watch Mario Lopez to peddle Meh crap–
@caffeineguy maybe they are wanting to tap into the crowd with a shopping addiction and then help enable that?
@caffeineguy well you are a dude
these shows like THE TALK cater to women (its basically a generic store brand version of THE VIEW) cheap to make and distributed across the country to fill time during the day

They occasionally have good deals at morningsave.com, like this one I bought on Saturday.

@craigthom (ノ°Д°)ノ︵ |
I just ordered a dust mop. I hope it’s not crap.
@sammydog01 if it is, do complain to the tv show THE TALK
@sammydog01 it will probably sit in a corner, collecting dust…
@jaybird Just like the ceiling fans I hope to clean with it
@communist Dear Sharon Osbourne…
@jaybird Well it is a dust mop after all
Reminds me of when local radio stations have audio clips of famous people saying their own names (and sometimes the station’s name) so I know I’m listening to a good station.
@medz Is that a new hairstyle @matthew? It suits you.
I don’t know how you managed to pause this Glen video on just the right frame, but I look great here. Printing a copy for my new headshots.
Seems very commercial.
Almost… not quite, but almost as bad as this:
Play the morningsave video at 2x speed. It’s great.
