Inspired by @phatmass bringing it up, here's a fun little game from Microsoft where you have to fight your way out of an XP warzone.
This seems far too hilarious for MS to have done. Kudos to them.
We still have XP machines at work, not all of them, but some of them..
And how many remember when excel had a mock-up of flight simulator built into it? you went to a certain square and then put in a certain formula.
@Cerridwyn "square"? You mean "cell"?
@Cerridwyn I remember it was X97;L97 and the world was purple. That was a fun trick in computer lab
@Moose I wonder if somewhere, someone was listing colors of products or something and suddenly a flight simulator started.
I still use XP I did that reg edit thing and still get updates. Too lazy to put Linux and my antique.
I have XP installed on 3 computers at home. I'm bummed that M$ doesn't support it anymore. Now I'm off to find out what this super secret hack is to get updates...
@jsh139 Please, please don't use XP at home- it makes the Internet a less safe place. Windows 7 really is a worthy replacement for Windows XP, and Microsoft has a great tool to make it easy to migrate your stuff to Windows 7: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/windows-easy-transfer. I used it to do the migration at work, and it worked beautifully. If you're unwilling to pay for Windows, you can run it unlicensed up to 90 days and then just re-install the machine and repeat. If you need any other advice or cheap Windows 7 machines, just ask.
@dashcloud I'm not adverse to upgrading pcs and I have licensed copies of the OS, it's that I have older pcs that will turn into molasses with Win7 on them.
@jsh139 SSDs & RAM are cheap enough now that you could upgrade a machine with them and not spend the cost of a low-end machine now. ($50 128 GB SSDs not uncommon)
@dashcloud I hear ya. ROI just isn't high enough for me at this point. These are really old computers. Like 10+ years old. I'll be using them until they die and then find cheap replacements.
@jsh139 Honestly, if you turn off aero, I've found that on shitty hardware 7 generally still manages to outperform XP. Windows is this big, bloated, overburdened-with-age pile of regrets… and XP was kind of the apex of that experience. 7 saw a lot of optimizations that really make it the best choice in many if not most (even unexpected) situations. I don't blame your stance at all, but I still think 7 is worth consideration, regardless of how shitty the hardware may be.
@jsh139 Have you given Win 8 a try? Runs leaner than 7 since it's meant to run on lower-powered machines.
@techdude9 I have and I didn't like it one bit. Although I didn't play around with it long enough. Seemed more like a tablet interface than a windows OS to me. Couldn't figure out how to get back to the traditional start menu reliably so I gave up.
Ack. My kingdom for a compatible joystick. My keyboard is incompatible with the particular simultaneous button presses.
@dashcloud How about a cheap side Win 7 laptop? User will do light browsing and Facebook type stuff. She would prefer a decent keyboard.
@speediedelivery I'll get you some later tonight- have a price range, or dislike refurbs?
No price range limit, I will be buying and giving to Mom in law. I would rather get a little better machine instead of saving a few dollars. Refurb is ok. I have been out of touch with which brands are decent.
@speediedelivery
Here's three reasonably priced machines- if these aren't really what you are looking for, tell me what you do/don't like, and I'll get you a new batch.
HP EliteBook 8440p - $299
Dell E5420 w/SSD - $329.99
Lenovo T410 -$319.99
All have a 1 year parts/labor warranty.
