Fountain Pens.
11I came into possession of my first fountain pen in the last week or two.
I get it now. You guys were right. It is a big deal (not sarcasm).
Now, as a beginner, I'm thinking about converting my fountain pen and using the fancy bottles of ink.
I'm eyeballing these pretty shiny inks here.
What advice do you have about fountain pens in general? What do you like and not like?

So the pen from the scribe delivery had an accident. So I went online and ordered some replacements....
I also signed up for goulet pen's ink drop :)
@sohmageek That Ink Drop looks so cool!!!! I can't for the next few months :( but Once I can I might go for it, when you get January's though can you share pictures so I can get an idea of how much ink comes in each little bottle, I can't see where it says. Thanks in advance!
@Foxborn 5-2ml samples. If you have the petit 1 that came in the box the cartridge is .6ml a regular sized cartridge for pilot is 1ml and a eye dropper converted petit 1 is 2 ml. I'm looking at picking up their sampler holder too cause it make it look like vials for a lab. :) http://cdn-tp1.mozu.com/6639-8588/cms/8588/files/ebf7fb2d-a1b1-4183-8eaf-48269256bdf5?max=600
I can figure out how to make that an image for here either due to the structure.
@sohmageek Sadly the Scribe Delivery is currently outside of the budget :( But I"m loving my ebay fountain pens
@sohmageek
@justbuyit Was just about to post it, but then I noticed you just beat me to it o_O
@FroodyFrog She stripped it out and I re-posted it. Pretty sure she thought the image wasn't loading right, as it pulls down and then does this weird re-sizing thing in the browser after it is cached locally if you are not on a fast connection.
Check out Mont Blanc Ink. I haven't tried it yet but I picked up 4 of their older rounder looking Shoeish shaped bottles for a buck each at a flea market.
@Foxborn good find! You'll have to let me know how they turn out.
@Foxborn I have a Mont Blanc roller. I replaced the cartridge with a Parker after-market. Once. There's no substitute for that superior Mont Blanc cart! Priced about 10x higher than the after-market carts, and very well worth every penny.
Purple!
@Barney how did you know I have purple ink?
@Foxborn @Barney
Simple logic: Who WOULDN'T have purple ink???
@Foxborn Doesn't everybody have purple ink?
@Barney sadly the petit pilot ones have no purple. So I may have to go get a platinum preppy.
@sohmageek Aww, what's wrong with that company?!?!
@sohmageek I think I have that one
watch out the pink i use all the time had the cap crack so that it falls off
Noodler's!
regarding refills and converters, the little twisty things are nice but you can get by using a plastic pipette to fill the "disposable" ones. I have a refillable converter but it does take some capacity away to make room for the mechanics.
@Lotsofgoats Make sure the pen has no holes if you are doing this directly into the body of the pen... One of the pens I recently got has a hole in the bottom.
@sohmageek oh goodness no, I would only ever do this into a cartridge that was removed from a pen
@Lotsofgoats I'm going to be filling the cartridge I think when it runs out unless I pick up some 100% food grade silicone grease... I make a "big" order and forget the simple $3 item.
I have a little advice... I hate to say it too... but I am currently shopping Goulet pens then buying some off Amazon... it's about 20% less on the one I'm looking at and free shipping... so... :)
Have you tried JetPens out?
@dashcloud yes, I used to buy my gel pens from them :)
ok people. what's the big deal with fountain pens? sure, according to cartoons, if you pull back the lever, a stream of ink flies into your enemy's face. but what's the other advantages?
@carl669 so it depends on how you like to write. I find fountain pens are able to have a finer line that can be smoother and more enjoyable to write with. That's my "beginner" answer. I don't enjoy writing with a ball point pen (I have one or two exceptions, but I don't consider them normal ball point pens)
Also you have the choice of just about any color of ink under the sun (some under black lights)
Also you have different sizes, the flow can be controlled also. Some of this is more advanced stuff like adjusting nibs (you can send away or if you're lucky enough to have a local shop, but that's not the cheapest..) But I find writing fun when I have the correct tool... Kind of like if your car had Square tires... that's how most ball point pens feel to me. It just flows with the fountain pens I've found. Granted you have to watch the paper you're using then, but it's all good! ;)
@sohmageek i do enjoy a good pen actually. what's the cost for a decent starter fountain pen and maybe just some black ink?
@carl669 A Lamy Safari w/ a single included cartridge is a great little starter pen for $24-30 on Amazon.
@carl669 I like the smooth flow though sometimes it gives me a fit
@brhfl thanks! now what's this about you not liking bacon?
@carl669 I tend to write in cursive, so I find that it flows a lot better. The shape of the pen and its structure help me have better penmanship.
This is the one I'm playing with now. It's only about $5.
@carl669 Oh and with fountain pens I don't press as hard or grip as tight so fewer hand cramps YAY
@Foxborn unless you want a deep color/bolder line.
@sohmageek Assuming the nib is flexy enough… try to coax flex out of a nib that isn't made for it, you may very well knock it out of alignment and/or spring it.
@hollboll be sure to keep the nib clean, that sparkly stuff can jam it up if neglected. I'm a big Sailor fan but I'm coming around on Diamine, I gotta say.
I thought the NVizio pen set fountain pens from Woot were the last fountain pen anyone would ever need...
so I bought a new pen because my Lamy AL-Star likes to make my fingers messy for some reason... this new one had a cartridge blow up in the package, so I had some cleaning up to do. I emailed the company to say hey this sucked and you should package your stuff better next time... and they just offered to mail me a new pen and a crapload of free cartridges...
so now I feel bad and I don't know what to do help pls
@Lotsofgoats It's a trap, they're just going to send you a watertight cardboard box full of unbottled ink!
@Lotsofgoats You should definitely accept them.
Koh i noor pens seperate the posers.
Camel has some good quality cheapish ink
So... (rather than going to the other thread, I went back here...) I have to say in the short amount of time since I Started on Fountain pens again, I've been through a lot of cheap ones... I should have just started with a lamy safari, but I would have picked the wrong one back then anyway... :P
I just got my order(s) in... What I acquired since December...
6 or so cheap Jinhao pens, mostly Lamy Safari look-alikes, but I don't like the nibs, They are ok on good paper, crap normal paper they suck at.
about 2-3 bottles of ink (Blue, Turquoise, green)
a Noodlers Konrad which I love the pen... starting to not like the filling mechanism, but I love the amount of ink it holds. IT came with a flex nib... again, great on good paper... not so much on meh paper... so I ended up getting a #6 Extra fine (which writes like it's a medium on regular paper) nib.
Some good paper (Goulet's mix of the paper to see what I like the most)
a few cartridges (NO I don't prefer them.. but I'm starting to think I'll waste less ink if I use an ink syringe and fill cartridges, it will also mean less mess on the grip section.)
My co-workers are tired of hearing me talk about ink/fountain pens...
Oh and I'm thinking of getting a nice TWSBI pen... Looking at both the and the
Mostly due to the ink pots that you can use that help with the filling situation... (I'm tired of inking my hands... lol)
