We inadvertently bought two of these a while back. It took a bit of doing, but my husband got them both working and we use an app called IP Cam to view them. Night vision is decent. Intercom isn't really loud enough to be useful.
@Thumperchick I own 2 old school Foscam's, the firmware is updated regularly, but I never used their app/software. So much better apps exist for only $1 or $2 that are compatible. I ordered one of these.
Perfect timing, have one, need 2 more. After the initial rage and frustration in setting these up to my network and mobile alerts, they are highly functional. The one camera I do have notified me back in November when someone broke into my apartment. (They must not have known I work with law enforcement)
Motion capture took photos and video of the two women, I called the police, and they were caught and arrested for B&E. I still have the photos this camera took, two every 1 second.
In for another, we've got a few of the lower end cameras and the insteon from awhile back. Love these cameras and pretty easy to setup. Use an app called iCam on my iPhone to get alerts when scumbags are on my porch or sneaking up the side of my house. We've got five total, but an HD version on the front porch would be nice, can't wait!
Wow. 3rd purchase from Meh in 6 months, but second in a row. You guys are on a roll! Crossing fingers I can get it set up. I'd class myself as moderately tech savvy (can do many things on my Macs, although with Apple routers too everything has been pretty much plug and play so far, network wise). Fairly confident in my googling abilities though, so should be fine! finished-domestic-sidecar
how is the wifi with these cameras? Can you place the camera at a good amount of distance from the router?... the last camera (annke sp1 from amazon) I had which looks similar to this camera needed to be next to the router for wifi to work...
I have a few of the older 480p ones that I use mainly to just check the view outside my front door. That being said, I wonder:
Does anyone use any Linux based monitoring software, similar to iCamSoruce to do motion detection/capture?
IR through glass doesn't work well at night. I've read about installing your own IR LED light outside, just wondering if anyone has done this or other thoughts (aside from installing the camera outside...)
@Alien88 IR night vision on these work fine for me. You can't see very well past maybe 15 feet, though. So it's not appropriate for long hallways. But it's plenty enough for any standard rooms in a house. Unless you are Donald Trump (or any rich dude or dudette).
I have the 960p and 720p plug n play versions of these cams. Decently easy to setup for an intermediate tech person. Novices might struggle a bit with port forwarding, but nothing YouTube couldn't teach.
We've got three of these we use to keep track of the kittahs when we're not home. They really do work great, once you get them set up. Read the directions, and don't forget to change the passwords! Otherwise the ruskies will be watching you...LOL!!!
I have on out front under the eave. 6 months outdoors with no issues. Good picture, good IR distance at night. In for another for out back. I just had my first meh...
Here's my camera setup using a dedicated NVR and seven 1080p cameras. I have one more to install but didn't want to go up into the attic at this time of the year. I don't even know where I would put the 8th anyway (NVR supports up to 16 but I only bought 8).
The drawback to these types of cameras is that they need to be wired, they are not PTZ, no intercom capabilities, and very expensive. The benefits are hi-res cameras, 24 hour recording, alarm capabilities, NVR can be locked away separately from the cameras, and one application and sign-in for all cameras.
Got it last time. Wifi setup was not going well so I plugged in Ethernet cable, set it up easily, then unplugged and switched to Wifi. That did the trick. YMMV
Glorified web cam, i own one pain in the tush to get on cloud and watch your home etc. easy setup sure but .. i rendered it useless it sits in a bag at home could never get it working properly ..I mean if you want to watch your front door and your at home works good but try watching your front door from 25 miles away all sorts of issues
Heres a concept Meh , lets say August try running 31 new items no repeats seems 15 days out of the month are a waste to most of the members who have already seen these items 2 or three times , loosing the luster for me anyway .. almost buy automatic any new items you post under 50 bucks so ty for that ..
i would take one if it supported 5ghz band, but my apartment has too much interference to use 2.4ghz for anything higher bandwidth than the thermostat.
@tjamesturner Do a channel scan with wifi analyzer and select a channel that isn't being used. Most people don't know how to change the channel so it remains at the default setting and you'll see in the analyzer everyone using just a couple of them.
@cengland0 i did that and found at least 3 networks on each channel for 1, 6, and 11. i also tried using each of those channels in the hopes that some networks might be quiet, but had no luck. i even tried channels 3 and 9, but those seemed even less reliable. on a good day i barely got enough bandwidth for web browsing let alone streaming video. but then i switched to an empty channel on the 5ghz band and have had smooth sailing. the only things still running on 2.4ghz are my thermostat and my car stereo. the thermostat only really needs to push a few bites every once in a long while, and my car has its own wifi hotspot. i might have been able to muscle in to the 2.4ghz band with a higher powered router, but why fight over one band when the other is free?
@cengland0 honestly, the best solution would probably be to simply talk to my neighbors and set up an internet connection co-op. but i prefer the introvert solution. although, sometimes i reconsider just for the opportunity to build a mesh network....
Notice that channels 1 and 11 are used more but channel 14 is completely available. You can still use the same channel as other people but with reduced results. Also, there is some bleedover so using nearby channels to heavily used ones isn't a good idea either.
@tjamesturner I like the internet co-op idea; however, I noticed the terms and conditions of home service internet forbids you from sharing your internet connection with neighbors. I have business class and even then they restrict my sharing to my building and not to my neighbors. So any customer that visits my office is allowed to use the internet but not anybody else.
Other issues arise when sharing internet such as the ability to see file and printer shares of your neighbors since they are on the same network. You can secure those but then would need additional setup and inconvenience when accessing them.
Another option is to run a wire from your camera to your router directly. Problem solved except you have to figure out how to hide that wire (if you care about aesthetics). All my cables go through the attic and inside the wall and are terminated with Cat5e RJ45 jacks. Most people don't want to go through that much effort so they go the easy route and that's wifi. Then you run into these issues.
@cengland0 i don't usually pay attention to "terms and conditions" that violate the principal of fair use. as far as i am concerned they have no legitimate reason to dictate how i use the bandwidth i purchase. i realize the crazy IP laws in this country theoretically expose me to a civil suit, but that is quite unlikely.
the security concern is more valid, but not a huge issue. i put user access on sensitive files and don't really care if my neighbor accidentally sends crap to my printer on occasion.
if i owned my home, i might run cat6, but in an apartment that seems like wasted effort.
@cengland0 In the 2.4GHz range, the FCC restricts channels 12 & 13 to low power use and prohibits channel 14. Many devices sold in North America don't even support channels 12-14 since it's kind of pointless unless you want to break the law.
I have a Summer brand video monitor that's almost 18 mo old and the screen is nearly shot from the constant use with our first baby. Any suggestions for apps or other software to use with this?
I have three of the FI9821P (which are exactly the same with the addition of a pan and scan mode) I have them all on the same 802.11G wifi. My biggest gripe was that the motion detection requires a schedule, there wasn't a great way to turn on motion detection and shut it off for all cameras when coming home or leaving. That was until I discovered the CGI commands! http://www.ipcamcontrol.net/files/Foscam%20IPCamera%20CGI%20User%20Guide-V1.0.4.pdf Very awesome! I would buy more but I really have the whole apartment covered with the three.
O.K. I should have bought, but waited too long. (Things are disappearing around my house!-I'll get one next time it comes up-maybe it will be a bit easier to set up.) Where do you hide the base at? It looks like it would be spotted pretty easy. I'm looking at the thieves pics and the camera is bolted up in a corner?
@wew These cameras mount and look HUGE! The idea is that it will deter and if not and they try to mess with it, they are already caught on camera. So let it hang out endowed and proud!

@studerc HAHA Stud your a very funny dude
@mellowirishgent you're*
@studerc how far in were you when you posted? Just curious...
Goooood
I JUST bought one of these on Amazon a few weeks ago. It's a great camera and easily worth this price!
@TBoneZeOriginal Nice try foscam share holder.
@SteveOOO Nice try, D-Link share holder.
Fourth!
I still have my even cheaper 480p Foscam from a few months ago and it is good enough.
@lljk But this is 720p... 720!!!
Speaker docks and knives get all the love ... and by love I mean, not love ... but IP Cams seem to sneak under the outrage radar.
@saodell That's outrageous!!
@saodell I'd welcome some knives at this point.
Not passing judgement one way or the other ... just commenting on commenting
The worst thing besides a JBL speaker

Crap, I just went digging, and the ones I have are similar, but not identical. Ignore this, I guess.
Always good to see Neil Ross back, dammit.
I think Home Depot just dropped these to $52.50 new?http://slickdeals.net/f/7997793-foscam-fi9816p-wireless-720p-indoor-pan-tilt-ip-camera-52-49-more-free-shipping
@jbreedlove Different camera
@jbreedlove Different camera and Slickdeals says the deal is expired.
In for two and renewed VMP, ugh.
aloof-wretched-dandelion
Jeez meh, how many of these things do you have. Or do you just like stocking them?
@DrunkCat 599... they had 599.
Darn it! I just want the Kombi for that price.
garbage
bath? freedom? ummmm i really dont need these but if you give em to me I wouldnt not use them
I am not teck smart. I need a cheap, easy to use camera to see what cat is peeing outside the litter box! Is this thing simple to use?
@mick I think you need at least a small amount of knowledge to set these up (or at least have decent google and direction-following skills).
The reviews are showing some issues with software updates and such. Anyone here have a direct gripe about this cam?
@Thumperchick I own 2 old school Foscam's, the firmware is updated regularly, but I never used their app/software. So much better apps exist for only $1 or $2 that are compatible. I ordered one of these.

@haneyg Haha, nice! I hope they got a very stiff sentence!
@haneyg LOL! Did they even notice the cuffs and badge hanging?
@tinsami1 oh yes, they noticed.
I just want to order the Scooby Doo Mehstery Machine.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Foscam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So when did they start putting the "humourous" picture first? Seems that's a recent-ish (anniversary?) change.
I have the 960p and 720p plug n play versions of these cams. Decently easy to setup for an intermediate tech person. Novices might struggle a bit with port forwarding, but nothing YouTube couldn't teach.

31 $49 things that @mellowirishgent hasn't seen before earns us $1519.
@mellowirishgent I've been waiting for these cameras to come back. I have one, wanted more after I realized how much fun it was.
@mellowirishgent the stuff keeps selling out, so.....

matchless-shocked-bagel Photos were all stupid.
This is my third Foscam, each a little different than the other.
In for three!
Such potential: provocative-beaming-pig
You had me, right up until "port forwarding"
@discussed That is just a router setting. Not sure what router you have but a simple google search with the model of the camera and router number can turn up a guide that will help. For example, here is one to setup the DLink 614 router with this camera.
http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DI-614+v2/Foscam_FI9821W.htm
@cengland0 Oh, I know what port forwarding is, I just hate hassling with it. :-)

Thank you everyone for buying them all up. These are becoming as synanomous with Meh as speaker docks...
Ummm....anyone see any of these as "shipped"?
@eeterrific yours is currently in transit. Check https://meh.com/orders for tracking info.
WTF?
