I handed them out a couple of years ago (they could choose - fidget spinner or candy and all but two chose fidget spinner). I was the 8th townhouse back in the parking lot and even though I had my porch light on I was getting few kids who would go back that far; they just kept going down the street. But I was mobbed after a kid yelled to others, “this house has fidget spinners!”.
They were the light up kind I bought from here. Some duds so it took me some time swap out LED lights so get them so all three were working - might have been egged or toilet papered if I had given out duds. When I ran out of those I gave them out with the LED part removed. While some kids who had seen the lighted ones were disappointed, they still chose them over candy. Don’t know if kids still prefer them over candy since that fad is basically over, but if kids are given a choice they should be happy.
We did both spinners and candy the last couple of years and the kids loved the spinners. Might depend on the age range of kids you get. (we get mostly younger) Skipping spinners this year as the trend has died down. We’re doing glowsticks and candy this year.
I was going to do spinners but got tired of fixing the duds. Instead I did glow bracelets, which I’ve done for years without egging or even TPing.
If you buy cheap glow sticks and bracelets and necklaces (as I do), I recommend opening, assembling, and activating them before giving them out. It can be difficult for kids or their parents to do it in the dark, and the little bastards will litter your and your neighbors’ yards with the wrappers.
Anyway, the kids seem happy to get these instead of candy. They may even last longer, depending on the kids.
I buy all my Halloween candy on the first of November.
@craigthom@therealjrn I was going to assemble them by putting the connector on the end, but not activating them. I figured that way they could use them whenever they wanted and not just that night.
@JnKL@tinamarie1974 Yes, though it included knives and spoons as well. We upped the ante and doubled the plastic-ware on their lawn (they were friends) Well, still are - don’t mean to imply…
Last year I gave out fidget spinners to over 60 kids and they were a big hit. One of the neighbor kids recently told me they really liked them and asked if I was going to do something cool like that again this year. He suggested I give out gift cards this year. Apple and Xbox gift cards!
Two years ago I gave out the fidget spinner a I purchased on Meh for Halloween. The kids loved them… Seriously, some even mentioned them when they came back last year.
But that was two years ago, and I think they’ve fallen out of of favor.
Not instead of. In addition to
mmmm free eggs
@therealjrn we love deals here

@Dave gave the kids a choice one year and tabulated the results. If I remember correctly spinners won.

@craigthom Yup, we do all for the little bastards.

@medz @therealjrn The problem with that is that they might get a dud. The cheap ones I buy fail or are very dim at least ten percent of the time.
And the kids are outside at night. That might not happen often.
@craigthom @therealjrn hmmm…maybe I have enough to give two each…one cracked and one not…
We have never been egged or TP’d. Y’all live in interesting places…
@JnKL but has your yard been forked???
@JnKL @tinamarie1974 Yes, though it included knives and spoons as well. We upped the ante and doubled the plastic-ware on their lawn (they were friends) Well, still are - don’t mean to imply…
@JnKL @tinamarie1974 @ybmuG
So y’all are a bunch of forkers!
@JnKL @mike808 @ybmuG not THAT type of forker!!!

Around here getting TP’d is a badge of honor. We decorate the houses of the cool people in the neighborhood every year.

@callow Great Idea $100 gift cards, or cash, should be just the ticket. lol
@callow @rickbergess You know, you have a nice house here mister…be a shame for something to happen to it…
@callow @rickbergess @therealjrn so you get a bunch of gift cards at the same value as the fidget spinners. I think they calculated to about $0.15.
@callow He must think you are Oprah.
