Ever Buy Meat Off Those Gypsy Trucks
1Just had my once every 6 months or so knock on the door from some random dude in a pickup truck offering to sell me "the last couple steaks for 50% off so he can go home for the day!".
I've always avoided them and don't know anyone who ever has bought meat from them but they seem to stay in business so I'm guessing someone is.
So - anyone ever bought anything from one? If so, how was it? Did you die? Get ebola? Hep C?

Pic from after a BBQ I had using that truck meat.
I bought some from Capital Meats when I was first married. I told him my freezer was full and he said he'd take that challenge. He managed to get 4 boxes in there. It wasn't very expensive and the meat was surprisingly good. Best pork chops I've had came out of those boxes.
I have actually never heard of this type of selling before. I am never home so maybe it does happen in my area and I just don't know it.
Never heard of it either.
They come to my door at least once a year. Have never bought anything.
I can only fathom something like that being even remotely acceptable were I living in a rural/small-town setting where individuals/families sell excess game meat or small seafood hauls with some degree of familiarity and trust. In an urban setting, though? I buy fruit and veggies off trucks on street corners, but the idea of rando door-to-door meat in an urban environment is unsettling. I can't imagine not going to a proper butcher/fishmonger where I can ascertain the provenance of fleshy foodstuffs. In my city, I'd be buying kitty kebabs or homeless hache for all I know.
No, but I used to live in New Mexico where buying tamales/shrimp cocktails out of the back of someones van was acceptable. The best shrimp cocktail I ever had was out of the back of a van. Huge shrimps and chunks of avocado in it for only $4. Never got food poisoning or rabies.
Ick.
A friend of mine used to sell for Diamond Meats. She said their stuff was good and not like, a "fall off a truck" type of deal. That said, I don't buy meat from strangers who come to my door... Unless it's the Scwann's man.
Interestingly enough, Iowa Steak Company stopped by my house about 2 weeks ago. Got a great deal and the steaks are pretty delicious. Exact same circumstances too.
