The books themselves are in the public domain, so every time these are sold, sometime points out that they can be had from Librivox for free.
Librivox recordings are made by volunteers. Those recordings can range from good to, for me, unlistenable, either due the narration or the recording quality. These are not from Librivox.
@eeterrific Somehow I doubt they’re mp3s … check the iOS app, it has two 1-star reviews (only). I don’t see anything that says the files are in a proprietary format … but it doesn’t say they’re not either
@eeterrific@MKarell They are mp3s on a flash drive. The app is optional. I transferred mine to a Kindle fire. I’m not sure you can write over the books but I would be surprised if you couldn’t.
@eeterrific@MKarell I just tested out the IOS app with the books I bought a while back on Meh (for a lot more money) and it worked fine. One reviewer complained there was an issue with the way chapters were numbered which is probably just an audiobook thing. And the other one lost his password. Dude, you gave it a one star rating because you lost your password?
@eeterrific Ok…here’s what I’ve determined (will find out after I receive it)…their web site says…“You can use your e-GO! Library for other data if you’ve already safely uploaded all the books to your computer’s hard drive.” And the doc says they’re MP3s…so that’s a winner. I’ve been looking at their USB…and its hard to tell, but it looks like a standard USB 2.0A on one side and a microusb on the other. I’m hoping its right, because that would make it worth it just for the two USB drives.
@mellowirishgent When I click on the “Register here” link, I’m taken to https://www.egolibrary.com/apps which prompts me to create an account in order to download the apps. What web address did you punch in?
The app has several books you can listen to for free if you want to try before you buy. I think this is an amazing deal and I have the 500 pack from before.
e-Go! Library
each book is one long MP3, which can be a problem depending on what you’re playing it on when you want to stop and come back to the book or skip around
but, oddly, some books seem to have been made out of separate chapter-length MP3s because a heavily accented voice will intone “file 12” or whatever between chapters
Mitigating points:
you can pretty easily break these into chapter-sized files with Audacity by simply splitting on silence of more than a few seconds

@jmbunkin Buzzkill
@Aschdrw Why indeed then.
As long as you have a Sean Connery reading Huckleberry Finn, and Matthew McConaughey reading Pride and Prejudice.
@hchavers oh my
@hchavers - Yes, yes they did. And they were naked while they read…
@aetris @hchavers I Heard that in a bad Sean Connery accent.
@Fuzzalini - Yesh, yesh you did…
These are not freebies scraped of the net. The are pro recordings. I have a set.
@radi0j0hn What makes them “pro”? I’m seriously curious. Thanks.
@Kerig3 @radi0j0hn The readers got paid. Pro equipment was used.

aw… there’s no “Curious George & the Electric Fence”
I guess it’s more of a short-story and the ending was too noisy.
@alacrity
@alacrity I am shocked it is not included.
@alacrity Buzzkill.
I wish the kids classics were cheaper without those crap headphones.
Mp3s? Are the drives write protected? $10 for two 8 gig drives plus the stories…

@eeterrific I have the 500 book version but it’s USB on one side and micro-USB on the other like you said.
Reminds me of those “1000 Fonts!” and “500 Casino slots games!” CDs from the “oughts”.
The writeup is great.
Anyone else try to redeem the code from the images? :-|
@tehtruth yes. Said “success” but wanted me to create an account and install an app. Nope!

I realize these are audiobooks, not e-books, but is there a way to import them onto a Kindle to listen to them?
@dmercure They are mp3s and should be easy to import most places. I have loaded them onto a Fire.
The classics are now on sale at the Big A for $62 combined (Prime eligible). I’m in for $10 . . .
What portable device can I play them on?
@firstcrack They should work on anything that can read an MP3 which is most things that play music.

I bought these in an earlier Meh.

My husband loves audiobooks. This ought to keep him busy for a while!
