Earlier every year?: Shoddy Goods 021
1If you celebrate Christmas, what’s your rule for when it’s ok for the decorations to go up?
We go pretty early, indoors, often the week before Thanksgiving. But try to hold back a bit longer for the outside decorations. Honestly, though, once it starts getting dark early, all bets are off for anything I can do to get some extra light and festivity going.

If you’re one of my neighbors, the lights go up a few years ago.
Back when I did that sort of thing…
When my daughter was young, we used to go to the Christmas Tree farm the first weekend in November. You could go, pick out and pay for your tree in the day time and come pick it up later on at night for the festivities the kids loved, like the hay rides and hot chocolate. We would pick it up the first weekend in December.
I quit bothering when she moved out. But after I became ‘single’ again I bought a fake tree and used that for a few years. It was easier for one person to do. Until as I said I didn’t.
I don’t have it in me anymore. It’s gotten so commercialized and one-uping your neighbors that it is no longer festive to me. It’s not been my holiday since I was a teen. I went from Lutheran to near-athiest to pagan and while celebrating the longest night is near universal, I just pour a glass of something and toast the universe these days. (I know we don’t have any from down under here, but really they should be celebrating in June, not December IMHO)
Message from the Wayne Business Association:
The Board met this morning and we have decided to have two trolleys this year, since it was such a hit last year. We will maintain the previous route for one of the trolleys and will be adding Audubon, Runnymede and Lansdowne to the second trolley’s route. As requested of both routes, we would appreciate participation from the residences in decorating their homes. We look forward to seeing the effort that you all put into the holiday!
What’s Next:
House Decorations: The WBA has asked that we all have our houses decorated as much as we can by that Friday night (12/6.) They are hosting a “best decorated” contest with prizes and we will be competing against the Midland Ave route. Generally in the past, the carriages have been full with waiting lines, so you should expect to see lots of happy families excited to celebrate the holidays.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me. Thanks!
@aetris
Oh hell NO!
Plus we live 1000-feet back off the country road surrounded by forest, so no one would even see the lights, etc. very well anyway.
Outdoor decorations needs to go up before the ground freezes, or it is much more difficult to stake them down appropriately. Christmas is a season in my house - starting some time in November and going through early January (not ending before Epiphany)
December 1st is the day we ALWAYS buy and decorate the Christmas tree, and the first day it’s above freezing after the weekend after Thanksgiving is when the outdoor lights get hung.
Around here, the only thing that’s REALLY irritatingly early nowadays is the cutover some radio stations do, where they suddenly play Christmas-only music starting almost immediately after Halloween. Which is just obnoxious.
I saw Christmas trees and decorations alonside the Halloween decor at Sams club this year.
Dont ever remember seeing that before!
Christmas has become way too commercialized. My family has stopped exchanging gifts with each other. We just get together for a nice dinner and enjoy each others company.
Hubby and I have a very nice artificial tree but its so much work for just the two of us we havent set it up for a few years now. I am considering getting rid of half of our Christmas decor and just put up a few things around the house for a festive feel.
We live on 2.5 acres so not many neighbors, so we dont bother putting lights up except for our chicken run which has solar lights all year long.
Now that I am almost 59 (no children). The holidays dont excite me much anymore. Just the sign of another year gone by.
For me now its all about pumpkin spice and peppermint mocha!
lol.
Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, then pulling them down either Jan 2nd or the first weekend after Jan 1. But we have people in the neighborhood who light up their house right after Halloween (or have color changing LED lights set to orange/purple for 3 weeks before Oct 31 and then changing to more Christmassy colors). And some folks keep their lights up until around MLK day.
Some neighbors have different colors and decorations according to the season.
I vote for year round color-changing LEDs. Red and blue for 4th of July, switch to orange for Halloween. Of course red and green for Christmas, red for Feb14, green for StPat.
The other holidays are more difficult. I suggest, orange and reddish-brown for Thanksgiving, colorful primary colors for either Easter or Spring Equinox. Maybe patriotic red and blue for MLK again and purple for Juneteenth. I’d do pink for International Women’s day and orange for Inauguration day.
This was my favorite one you’ve done. Nice job
