@djslack It is a three stage charger, delivering ‘max’ charge rate till it hits 70%-80%, then tops off at a lower rate. The third stage is a ‘floating’ status where the battery is topped off as needed.
Sounds pretty nice, but the “dead to start” in 40 minutes is suspect. According to the manual (from whence I gleaned the above), the charger will not operate unless it senses at least eight volts in the battery. This would imply that the time from ‘dead’ to anything would be infinite.
For those who are happily ignorant of the ARNA, it looks like the sordid love child of a Sentra and a Chrysler Horizon. Fitting I suppose, since Alpha is now owned by Fiat, who also owns Chrysler.
@hchavers I did just last night. Car was parked at the Midway Airport Lot for 3 days, came back last night and it was dead. Airport Parking Customer Service came out with a bigger version of the jump starter and saved my ass. It was fucking freezing.
Happy accident it happens to be on sale today. I’m buying one.
@martycaw they have their place. They are easy to charge, aren’t too dangerous in the way lithium’s are, can handle a bit of abuse, have great discharge currents…
The only things going against them IMO, weight and self discharge
@macdaddy1: Check with your post office to see if they’ll receive deliveries from any common carrier if you give the shipper the street address of the post office, with your P.O. box as a “Unit Number _____”. I’ve been doing this for years and it’s a great way to avoid having packages left on my porch. I have EVERYTHING delivered to my P.O. box this way, including furniture that comes in boxes (including a couple of side chairs), big bags of dog food, and four giant tires I bought on eBay.
@wootmania And I always use my “zip+4” zip code, which is my zip code + box number. [In theory. your zip+4 is all the address you need for a PO box.]
And conversely, don’t assume that common carriers won’t use your box. In some ares, common carriers will contract with the Post Office for the PO to provide ‘last mile’ delivery.
And if you live in a small mountain town without home mail delivery (as I am pleased to do)), that means the local PO has to figure out which box is associated with the name and physical address. The zip+4 helps eliminate delays.
If only I could use their 20% off coupon- NOPERS- it specifically excludes Viking Branded [not like it isn’t one of their own proprietary brands, is it??] items…
Which brings the “sale” price to a reasonable 59.99 for a 12,000 mAh Lithium-Fe battery-containing jump starter- with great reviews [some of which may even be from real customers]…
better deal was that energizer jumper from a month ago…I bought one and have used it to jump several chev V8’s in 40 degree weather…worked like a charm…
If you are going to buy a Lead Acid battery jumper like the one being sold, spend some money and get a BIG one…
@fastharry Wow! I was seriously disappointed by mine. It barely started my V6 the first time I used it then wouldn’t even crank the next time I needed it. (Yeah, I kept it charged.)
@fastharry I may have to give that a try! I just figured that it wasn’t up to the job and that I would keep an eye out for a deal on a Noco Genius… I ordered a pair of those for work and they’ve far exceeded my expectations.
Scenario: My daughter left her lights on in the parking lot (again). So she puts the battery maintainer on the car for about 4-5 hours. Would it charge the battery enough to start it?
Meh, disappointing crap today. Offering us a shitty SLA battery and calling it a lithium? C’mon. If you have to sell us a crappy jump starter they need to be a 19AHr model, and dirt cheap. I’ve bought way too many inexpensive lithium jump starters for $60 or less, some of which even start my diesel engines!
@evangelionhd Actually this is a terrible deal-- $55 for a $20 lead acid battery and a plastic box to put it in? The battery should be $28, and the charger $19
@roccopelletiere I’m going to ping a staffer to get your personal information off the forum. You should be able to have a different shipping address from shipping, but I don’t really "know"

Last year picked up a Stanley “Fat Max” at Walmart for 40 bucks but it came with a compressor and Walmarts one-year road service( $50. value) now that’s a kick azz deal. …

Is a chinaman gonna pee on these?
@ThatsHeadly Also, Dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please.
@jasonbaldwin What if they aren’t Americans?
@klittleman Asian, I suppose. Perhaps the reference to The Big Lebowski was lost on you.
@jasonbaldwin Lebowski was a chiner?
900 Amps should jump start a 4L engine but the 12amp battery makes me wonder.
@jewelshound that’s Ah, not A. In mAh, like most power banks, that’s 12000 mAh. The real question is the charge/discharge rate, or C.
@jewelshound 900 amps is like the power service to 4.5 entire houses. That’s 108,000 Watts at 120 volts. It’s 10,800 watts at 12 volts.
@dickie541 I thought I saw an “m” so my mistake.
These don’t work as a defibrillator so no deal.
@cengland0
Maybe not a defibrillator for HUMANS…
But for a Cylon on the other hand. …
Which is it? SLA or Li-Ion?
@dickie541 According to some quick googling, it’s SLA.
@dickie541 Judging by the weight, I’d guess the jump starter is SLA. So, how often does that need to be maintained?
@mehcuda67 quite often. Once a month, I’d say
Y’all’s specs are all jacked up tonight.
Which is it? SLA or Lithium Ion? (Does it weigh like 10 pounds or less than two pounds?)
At 6A? Maybe a motorcycle battery. Or a just-barely-dead battery. This is more like an overnight charger/maintainer.
Weight was posted just below that. It is SLA.
@djslack It is a three stage charger, delivering ‘max’ charge rate till it hits 70%-80%, then tops off at a lower rate. The third stage is a ‘floating’ status where the battery is topped off as needed.

How much do I love that last pic?
@ruouttaurmind At first, I was thinking OMG, an Arna. But then they were hatchback only, so phew – it’s a Sentra.
For those who don’t know, Nissan had a (short) partnership with Alfa Romeo back in the 80’s. Italian design and Japanese reliability, right?
The resulting car was the opposite! – it had all the “reliability” of an 80’s Alfa Romeo and the “beauty” of an 80’s Nissan!
@narfcake sounds like a Fiat 128.
@narfcake OMG, the Alfa Romeo Nissan Autoveicoli!
For those who are happily ignorant of the ARNA, it looks like the sordid love child of a Sentra and a Chrysler Horizon. Fitting I suppose, since Alpha is now owned by Fiat, who also owns Chrysler.
@ruouttaurmind Fun fact: the Chrysler (Plymouth) Horizon was French in origin. It was originally a Simca.
@mfladd Nah. The Fiat was all their design. Later in life, it did resurface as the Zastava Koral; Americans knew it more infamously as the Yugo.
@mfladd I had one of those for six months. (Bought it new.) The seats were very comfortable. I’d sit in them for hours cursing that car.

Who jumps cars in these days of cell phones, traffic cameras, and roadside assistence?
Looks like another yesteryear product the Meh buyer found in the dumpster. Some thing really need to stay there. Remember the candy corn?
@hchavers speaker dock, anyone?
@hchavers Wait, there’s phone app that jump starts your car?
@hchavers its snowing today so calling AAA or progressive roadside assurance all routes to the same towing company
the wait time while snowing is 2+ hours
vs having a jump starter in your car already
@ergomeh Jumpstart app, hmm… Uber? The minimum ride is what, $7? Sounds like a good deal for a jump on demand…
You must not have any more of the Star Wars ships to go with the theme of the day.
Spent my money on a movie ticket, so I can’t by the Meh today anyway.
after 5 years my iphone4 can’t keep a charge anymore, this should do the trick!
Sla could mean sealed lead acid , they are obsolete, does anyone know?
@martycaw it is exactly that. They’re not obsolete, but they are not as small, lightweight, or non-self-discharging as li-ion packs.
@martycaw they have their place. They are easy to charge, aren’t too dangerous in the way lithium’s are, can handle a bit of abuse, have great discharge currents…
The only things going against them IMO, weight and self discharge

Mehtizens lurv da nitecore.
Too bad they can’t mail the charger to a P.O. Box. NO DEAL!

Copper clad anything is a no deal. Wiring’s got to be pure copper for speakers, ethernet, or jumper cables.
@skemmehs If it’s your service to find cheap flights, why do you need the referral link?
@Pantheist just so I can keep track of how you signed up
@skemmehs Ah, makes sense!
@skemmehs Why does God need a star-ship?
I don’t like Sealed Lead Acid Batteries- they are too heavy and unreliable- hence the need for jump starters.
So maybe this:

@fastharry I may have to give that a try! I just figured that it wasn’t up to the job and that I would keep an eye out for a deal on a Noco Genius… I ordered a pair of those for work and they’ve far exceeded my expectations.
@sig11 let me know how it works out…thanks for the tip on the NOCO, i’ll check it out…I also bought a JACO off amazon, that has been nice as well…
Scenario: My daughter left her lights on in the parking lot (again). So she puts the battery maintainer on the car for about 4-5 hours. Would it charge the battery enough to start it?
@wickhameh yes, it should do that.
@wickhameh Probably not - according to the manual, the charger must detect at least eight volts in the target battery in order to charge.
