Dumb Barney's stupid smartphone questions
12I finally bought a smartphone. I really had thought that I would be the last person on earth to have one. Anyway, I am going to have this thread ready for when I have questions about my phone.
There are a lot of smart, techie people around here and I’m hoping that some of you will have the patience to help me when I need it.
Thanks!

Do you know your phone has more computing power than what we used to get to the Moon?
@therealjrn All I want is for it to work and not give me too much grief.
@therealjrn But far less kerosene, oxygen, and hydrogen.
@Barney @therealjrn
Welcome to pain!!!
What did you get for yourself?
@Barney @f00l @therealjrn
I’m going to take a guess: Moto G6 on Project Fi?
@Ignorant You cheated, you’ve been using my fortune telling machine without my permission.
@f00l
The pain topic is in another thread.
@therealjrn don’t most calculators have more computing power?
@Barney
The pain subtopic is always part of any smartphone topic;
know this if thou knowest anything, smartphone-padawan.
@f00l I get by with a little help from my friends.
@Barney
Then you have found the path to the Light Side.
Congrats! Hope you enjoy!
Smartphones are the most useful things in my life.
And the most infuriating.
Congratulations! How much do you save on your phone bill?
@RiotDemon $25 - 30 a month. Depends on data usage. I have no idea how much of that I’ll use. If I go data crazy, it will be a lot less.
@Barney if you use wifi, you should be ok. Most big places have WiFi. There’s always some security concern. Just don’t do any banking on public WiFi, etc.
@RiotDemon Thanks for the info. It’s advice like this that I need because most people forget that I don’t know ANYTHING about using a smartphone.
@Barney @RiotDemon There is a thing called WiFi assist, at least on iPhones. It will use data to boost a poor WiFi signal which is bad because you use data when you think you’re on WiFi. I turned it off. Maybe someone that knows more about phones can tell you more?
@Barney ask away. I’m sure you’ll get great answers.
For the WiFi option, if you pull down from the top, a little notification menu should show up. Usually in there you can toggle the WiFi on and off.
@Barney @sammydog01 Android does have a smart switch thing. It’ll be in the options for WiFi.
@RiotDemon Do I want to have the WiFi switched on or off? Would there be a reason to have it switched off?
@Barney if it’s off, you save battery, but it’ll use data to update things like your email and weather, etc. I leave mine on most of the time.
@RiotDemon Hmm…
@Barney I try to also leave mine on because sometimes I’ll get home, forget it’s off and burn through a bunch of data. Oops.
@RiotDemon Uh-oh.
I’m planning on using my laptop at home, but I’m told that I probably won’t. I guess I’ll find out in a few days.
@Barney @RiotDemon Leave the WiFi on and carry a battery pack. I know a place that sells them every couple of weeks.
And your laptop has a much bigger screen. You will probably use it at home unless your vision is really, really good.
@RiotDemon @sammydog01 Ah, I also know a place that sells battery packs. In fact, I’ve got a couple of purple ones that still work (surprise, surprise).
I love my laptop. Yes, I will be using it at home.
@RiotDemon @sammydog01 So, here’s a dumb question. How often do I charge a cell phone battery? Can it be overcharged? My Tracphone, I seldom keep it on, and a charge will last me for a month or longer, but I will have my smartphone on all of the time because it will be my main phone.
@Barney @RiotDemon @sammydog01
You charge the smartphone whenever you are near a charger.
At home and in the car, if you are near a charger you put the phone on the charger.
You carry a spare charger with you if you are able.
It sux.
Re leaving WiFi on all the time.
I don’t.
Battery life
And if it is on, it might try to connect to every open network I go past, whether I want it to or not.
@f00l Hmm… My life is about to get complicated.
@Barney
One other fabulous smartphone fact:
Chargers and charger cable break.
Lightning and type C cable are sturdier than micro-usb cables. They last longer.
But always have spare charging cables that will work both at home and in the car.
I always use a good case and a screen protector on my phone. Airways. Phone did not leave the house until those were on it, not even after I first unboxed it.
That’s prob a bit extreme.
But if you don’t want a broken or cracked screen or scratched up phone, then get a case you like, and get an impact glass screen protector.
There are billions of these for sale on Amazon.
The impact glass screen protectors are much easier to apply than the old flexible ones.
@f00l I have already ordered screen protectors and a case. Not really knowing what I want/need it was just a shot in the dark. I can always buy something else at a later time.
As for charging cables, I’ll have to think about this and figure out what to get.
Me sits, me thinks. It’s so hard.
This is more complicated than owning a dog.
@Barney I usually charge my phone in the evening.
My old phone, the battery went to shit, so I charged it all the time.
Try to use the original charger. If I use different chargers, the battery doesn’t seem to hold a charge as long.
I personally like the low profile hybrid cases. Harder back, flexible sides. Thinner to for in my pocket. I also use the plastic screen protectors because they last longer. Everyone I know that has a glass screen protector breaks it within a month.
@Barney this is the type of case I’m talking about. Usually called hybrid or TPU.
https://m.ebay.com/itm/For-Motorola-Moto-G6-Play-XT1922-Two-Tone-Glitter-Hybrid-Case-Purple/362414996567?hash=item54619dfc57%3Ag%3A7E0AAOSwY8BbdQIp&LH_BIN=1
There’s a bunch of different versions of most phones. eBay usually has some kind of nickname for the different models.
My last phone I had around 5 years and I never cracked the screen. I drop my phone all the time. I don’t know why I’m so butterfingers with phones. Maybe it’s a testament to HTC phones.
@Barney @RiotDemon
Have used glass screen protectors for years. Sometimes the edges chip (tiny chips). Have only broken one once when I dropped that phone a few years ago.
The phone was perfectly usable with the cracked impact glad screen protector, until the replacement came. The screen itself was fine.
Either is way better than no screen protector.
@Barney
Charging cables
Does your new phone use type C cables (same front and back)?
Those are pretty good.
For starters you might get some Amazon basics extra cables. That is a solid brand.
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Type-C-USB-Male-Cable/dp/B01GGKYN0A/ref=sr_1_2_acs_sk_pb_1_sl_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1535672480&sr=8-2-acs&keywords=usb+type+c+cable
Then get perhaps am Anker or Aukey 12-volt USB outlet for the car. Something like this.
https://www.amazon.com/s?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=anker+car+charger&sprefix=Anker+%2Caps%2C246&crid=2E4QWJAMWX225
Those are good quality and will get your started.
@RiotDemon I ordered this the other day.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Motorola-Moto-G6-G6-Plus-Case-Hybrid-Shockproof-TPU-Rugged-Armor-Phone-Cover/302767593839?var=601647756973&hash=item467e5ad96f:g:~UwAAOSw8nxbApRX
Does this mean I’ve done something right? Maybe?
@Barney I have 2 gigs of data which is enough for what I do (maps, occasional google of prices, solitaire card game, text including sending photos, no videos or music). I set mine up to use wifi at home rather than data. That helps.
@f00l I don’t know what cable it uses, I don’t have the phone yet.
@Kidsandliz I’m hoping to keep it at 1GB or less. Does music use a lot of data?
At home, I’m going to use my laptop.
@f00l I just don’t know about cables. There seems to be so many types.
@Barney
The Moto 6g uses Type C.
Most new Android phones, esp the nice ones, use type C.
@Barney How much music uses depends on where you stream it from. I don’t so not an issue. I will send (text) photos from my phone to others presuming I am using my phone on wifi, otherwise I try to avoid doing that. Otherwise, like you are planning to do, I use my laptop at home instead (well except for texts).
@RiotDemon @f00l I did order glass screen protectors when I bought the case. But screen protectors are so cheap, so I’ll just see what kind I like.
@f00l C cable – I’ll order one soon. Charger for car? Don’t know if I need one, I’m not driving around in my car very much.
@Barney
Any streaming service uses huge dollops of data.
Or you can just put you fav music on the phone at home and then play it wherever and never use any cell data for music.
Video streaming will use lots of data. In fact that’s where most of it goes for many people.
YouTube is a fiend if you get lost in there.
If you stream on wifi, no worries.
@Kidsandliz Ha! I don’t know how to text.
@Barney
You absolutely want a car charger. Even if you rarely use it. Safety thing. I used to put stores in my dad’s glove boxes jic.
Suppose you need to call road service or call someone in an emergency and your phone is dead.
That not my idea of fun.
@f00l Nope, don’t see me doing much video streaming on my phone. The screen is so damn small.
@f00l
This smartphone thing is beginning to be not my idea of fun.
@Barney
Re “no vid streaming on smartphone”
Ha ha ha.
@f00l Don’t laugh at me!
@Barney
Most useful
By far, lapped the field, going away.
Most infuriating
Yeah that too.
Think of smartphones as being a kind of
/image Hotel California
@Barney yep! That’s the type of case I like. I would suggest ordering a few more because they don’t last as long as an OtterBox for example. They will eventually break but I’d rather deal with that than the bulk of the expensive cases. My current one is super sparkly. It’s blinding in the sun.
@RiotDemon OK. I’ll see if I like the case, and if I do I’ll order some more hybrid ones. Thanks!
@Barney Well as soon as some of your friends find out you have a cell phone you will get texts from them. Replying isn’t hard.
@RiotDemon @f00l @Kidsandliz I feel like I did on my first day of kindergarten. Dad, yep my dad, dropped me off with a whole bag of school supplies and then left. I didn’t have a clue about what to do.
I’m feeling the same way about this phone.
@Barney @Kidsandliz
This could be heaven or this could be Hell
We are all just prisoners here, of our own device
You can check out any time you like like, but you can never leave.
@Kidsandliz
-sigh-
@f00l Ha, just like my phone will probably end up, this video doesn’t work.
Ah, you switched it.
@Barney Go to the App Store and download something called “Pokémon Go”.
@sammydog01 Hahahahahaha! Nope, I know better than to do that.
@Barney I have only had a smart phone 2 years and a bit. Before that just a clamshell which I only got when the ghetto van was so old it was really unreliable (died in 2015 at 25 years and 3mo old) and needing to call a towing company was a high probability event. I did find having a smart phone has caused me not to have as many phone numbers memorized. I swore I wouldn’t become dependent on the smart phone to find my way around. With a few exceptions I have stuck to that. As a result I still have maps in my head (and some in my car too). Stupid thing has lead me astray a few times and because I knew it was telling me something dumb I ignored it at those turns and it eventually recalculated back on to the route I was planning to follow.
@Kidsandliz I don’t know.
@Barney @f00l @Kidsandliz but, whyyyyy dad???
@f00l @Kidsandliz @RiotDemon Mom worked days, Dad worked nights. Dad went to all of my school events, which was very unusual since most of the Moms, when I was growing up, were housewives.
@Barney @f00l i, personally, have found that it is easier to have a case that covers the front of the phone so if the phone drops the front is protected. a couple examples:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079DNTKLZ/ref=twister_B079DN98XP?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 or one without the wallet thingy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CNP622Z/ref=sxbs_sxwds-stppvp_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=d45777d6-4c64-4117-8332-1659db52e64f&pd_rd_wg=oKYha&pf_rd_r=GA3T3S4GPZZ59G7WQ2JQ&pf_rd_s=desktop-sx-bottom-slot&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B07CN4VPNY&pd_rd_w=XFOQN&pf_rd_i=Moto%2BG6%2Bcase&pd_rd_r=a75d0d48-f860-4bff-be8f-215a2802744d&ie=UTF8&qid=1535902370&sr=1&th=1
@rockme513
Ooooh, such pretty purples.
I don’t know what I want in a case, I’m just going to have to try out a few and see what tickles my fancy. Thanks for showing me this, I’m definitely going to check them out.
@Barney @rockme513
I like cases that leave the front of the phone uncovered (except for the impact glass screen protector) but have a bit of a “lip” or “edge” that protrudes out from the front screen glass slightly.
Such as the Otterbox Commuter design. (One of many such cases).
This does give the phone screen some protection from drops.
The wallet-style cases always get in my way somehow.
@Barney @f00l @rockme513 I go for the cheapest name brand one I can find- picked up an Otterbox Symmetry for my phone for $8 and Speck Presidios for my kids’ new phones for $15. They should really last longer than your phone.
My new glass screen cover came in a box of crap.
@Barney @rockme513 @sammydog01
I used to use a wallet case. One thing I noticed:. When I dropped the phone the case always fluttered open.
So the screen of the phone always smacked the floor anyway.
That’s why I like one that ductings like the Otterbox Commuter.
I don’t like the Otterbox Defender, tho it will totally protect the phone.
It’s right for some people, esp in factory or hard hat settings.
But when I can’t open the case to get to the phone, it’s too much case for me.
@Barney @f00l @rockme513 I had an Otterbox Defender on my last phone and loved it. It got kind of nasty so I bought a new Otterbox Defender and passed it on to my kid. That phone is still pristine after 5 years of daily use. She drops it a lot too. On one of the new larger phones it would be awkward as hell.
@Barney @RiotDemon @sammydog01 My cell is my only phone. I got a switchplate cover for the outlet above my bed with a little shelf where the phone can sit, so I plug it in and set it there in easy reach at night. It rarely needs charging during the day, only if I play lots of games. The only time I’ve exceeded my 1g on Google Fi was when I watched you tube videos in the dentist waiting room once. You tube is evidently a data hog.
The most useful phone accessory I have is this silicone credit card/id/$20bill holder from Amazon for $6. It sticks tenaciously to the back of the phone case and holds 3-4 items. I don’t have to carry a purse or wallet, just my phone.
Too late to edit. The 10 pack pictured is $7.99. Stocking stuffers!
@moondrake That’s a great idea. I rarely carry my purse, so something like this will come in handy.
I just bought a smart phone too! It’s not for me though.
@sammydog01 It’s just wasted money, spending it on kids.
@Barney That’s why I got a cheap one.
@sammydog01 A cheap kid? I didn’t know there was such a thing.
@Barney They’re called dogs. Not exactly free but you don’t have to send them to college.
@Barney @sammydog01 But yours needs a smart phone?
@rockblossom @sammydog01 Give it up sammydog. You’re not gonna win with us today.
@Barney @rockblossom @sammydog01

@Barney @f00l @sammydog01
@f00l @rockblossom @sammydog01 Is there a video where the dog throws the phone in the trash?
Watch out, Barney!
You don’t know how much you start depending on it until you set a glass of ice water on it in a dark hotel room which drips condensation into it until it fries.
Then, in your bereft state you will locate a magical technician who incredibly brings it back to life making your life whole again.
Just sayin’
@kdemo So I will be okay if I just keep the lights on in my hotel room?
Uh, thanks for all of the encouragement, I think.
@Barney - That should solve several potential issues.
And pro tip - If texting doesn’t come naturally, many phones have a voice-to-text option.
Congratulations on your new dependent!
If you discover that you need the phone every day - as so many of us do - then you might consider getting yourself a really cheap backup phone. So long as it’s usable, even if the screen has some cracks.
That way if something goes wrong with your phone, you have a temp phone ready to go.
Most of us use our old phones for this emergency.
@f00l I’ve been thinking about keeping my old Tracfone (different phone number). It costs me less than $7 a month, so at least I’d have a phone if my other gets water poured on it by @kdemo.
@Barney @f00l @kdemo be interesting to find out how he manages to do that through the airwaves. If he is successful I have skunk spray I’d like to send to someone. Let me know he pulls this off.
@Barney @f00l @kdemo You can keep the phone, let the tracphone service lapse, and reactivate it at need. I keep my beloved but busted up Moto X and when my Pixel woke up dead a few months ago, it took about 60 seconds to reactivate my old Republic Wireless account so I’d have an interim phone.
Public WiFi and data security:
One method is to use a commerical VPN. Then all your data is encrypted.
Downsides
Possibly no streaming media whole it is turned on
Slowdowns due to processing overheads and possible congestion thru the VPN servers
Small annual cost ($30-40/year, look for specials)
this requires a little setup and can be turned on and off as you wish.
I don’t use it much but I mostly use cellular data.
When I use one, I use PIA (Private Internet Access). I think they are reputable and reliable but there are other good ones.
Check VPN reviews if you want to go this way. Check for current specials on Slickdeals.
PIA’s website
https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/
Most reliable apps will encrypt sensitive data. So no need for a VPN if using the app.
We hope.
This would include big name banking and financial and shopping apps etc.
Plan to keep your apps (esp browsers and financial/shopping apps) up to date. And keep your OS up to date.
@f00l Or she could just turn off the WiFi if she has a burning desire to buy something while on the road, right?
@f00l @sammydog01 I don’t know.
@sammydog01
If there is no local WiFi, any data request (including the constant background stuff) automatically goes to lte.
I just don’t like waiting while the phone tries to connect to some WiFi hotspot first, when the signal is too weak, or I don’t wish to accept the t&c at that hotspot.
And battery.
So I keep wifi turned off unless I deliberately mean to use it.
But under Google Fi I might rethink that.
Congrats! The Moto G6 on Project Fi is what we bought for our kids after my daughter fell into a deep mud puddle with her old phone. The batteries are pretty good, and they have rapid charge, so you can increase your charge by about 50% in under a half hour. I would not leave it on the charger once it’s past 80% or so because over time it degrades the battery from what I understand. What I have them do is charge their phone either when they get home from school, or while they’re getting ready in the morning. Overnight they turn on the “battery saver” toggle so they don’t lose much battery while it’s not in use. At school, where they don’t have access to Wifi, they turn on the “data saver” toggle so the phone doesn’t use chunks of data while sitting in their lockers.
These are the cases I bought them for extra protection:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CKPZZJH/
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CG58WHW
I bought these charging bases for quick charge:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B071SHKFRB
And these cords:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N5KL10L
For a car charger, I’ve been using this one for a couple years:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AR8OST8 You can use the above cords with it, or buy any type C to type C cable for rapid charging in the car.
@PurplePawprints Hey, thanks! This makes me feel pretty good that I made the right decision And thanks for the extra info.
@Barney You’re quite welcome! If you have any questions or run into issues and need help, let me know and I’ll try to help. I’m sure between me and the kids we could figure it out.
@PurplePawprints Crap, I got my kid a Galaxy J7. Is this one better? I would hate for @Barney to have a better phone than my kid.
@Barney @sammydog01 I have no idea! Husband and I have Fi and I just bought the phones they had that were cheap enough I wouldn’t want to strangle the kids if they broke them. Of course, I also bought the device protection just in case. I don’t know anything about the Galaxy lines because I just use whatever Fi offers (and Republic before that). Your kid might still have the better phone.
@PurplePawprints @sammydog01 Wouldn’t that be the pits if Barney had a better phone?
@PurplePawprints - I Love Project Fi! Got a great deal on my phone through them as well - several years ago now. I never go over 1gb of data, so bill is always under $30.
@kdemo I will be on Project Fi, too. I’m hoping to keep my usage at 1GB or less. Fingers crossed.
@kdemo When it was just me on the account I never went over $30 either. Husband and I together were usually around $50. With the kids, it’s a lot higher, but that’s because I financed their phones (0%) and am paying device protection, plus they both use more data than either of us adults. I love Fi also and have never had any issues with their customer service.
They livin’ it up at the Hotel California

Make good use of the google assistant app. It’s like having Alexa in the car or where ever. I’m always telling it to remind me in an hour to do… ., Remind me tomorrow to call so and so. Remind me the next time I’m in Walmart to get vitamins, etc. Oh… and if you have a thought while you’re out and wanna remember it later tell google to take a note and you tell it what you want and it will email it to you. Very useful as a memory.
And if you have a moto, use the driving assist and if a text comes in while you are driving it will read it to you can you can answer back all hands free.
@lseeber Today, I am an panic mode. I really don’t want a smartphone. I like my landline.
I’m not sure I would like an “Alexa” device; it sounds kind of unnerving to me.
Yes, I bought a moto, but I don’t know anything about texting. I know very few people who text and if they want me, they have to call me.
I wish they hadn’t priced my landline to a ridiculous amount, I’d keep it forever.
Yes, I am an old dinosaur, I barely learned how to operate my computer.
@Barney Don’t panic! I have an Ooma I bought here- it works off your computer line and is cheap. If all else fails check it out.
@Barney I was the same way… My husband talked me into getting one and once I learned it, it’s pretty handy. And… youtube has tons of how to vids to make it easier to learn. Just type your model phone into the search bar (and maybe also a search on your model + hacks) and you should be able to see how to work most stuff more easily. (I’m no spring chicken myself).
@Barney honestly, you can treat your phone like a landline and ignore any texts that come in. It’ll be ok.
@Barney Yes you can do exactly what @RiotDemon says. Also the people you know who call you may not realize your number has been switched over to a smart phone so may not even try to text you.
At first what I did was treat my phone like a landline. I didn’t even bring it everywhere with me (actually I still don’t). I LIKE being able to ignore the phone, ignore texts… and with a smart phone people tend to presume you will drop everything to answer. Like RIGHT NOW. Nope. I control my devices not the other way around.
I have slowly, on rare occasion, used some of the other features the phone has. I do text - but still prefer to talk instead. I do sometimes use the map/directions function or use the ability to find where I am on a map if I get lost (I am good at taking wrong turns and I practice that a lot) and then type in where I am going to figure out how to get back on track. I used the internet on it a couple of times for price matching in Office depot when I bought printer toner and Walmart last christmas for a kid present. And when I was in a pet store to use my $15 in coupons that weren’t coming up on my loyalty card, showing them my account where they were.
Would I die without having a smart phone. Nope. But there are occasions, rare occasions, that I do appreciate what it can do. Likely I am missing a lot of opportunities to use it to it’s potential (well unless that potential requires buying a larger data plan which I am not doing). Considering I only paid $125 for it on a black friday, I have more than made back what the excess (over a phone card plus buying the phone) landland charges were. So it was cost effective in that regard.
The only other thing I did which I am glad of was to buy one of those rechargeable power banks so that if my phone is running out of battery power I can charge it. I keep it in my backpack so I always have it with me. And also a way to charge it from the car lighter. That’s also worth it.
@Barney @lseeber that google “alexa” app is already on your phone https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox&hl=en_US
its preinstalled on all android phones
once you set it up and get used to it , it can do many many things
including calling people, texting people, checking the weather
it really makes the phone easy to use and requires only your voice
@communist @lseeber Ok, thanks. I will check it out.
@RiotDemon I hate phones anyway. Ignoring it will be easy for me.
@Barney Like me… I still wash my floors on my hands and knees… I don’t think those new fangled mops do as good a job. I was married with a kid before I ever broke down and tried making one of those cake mixes in a box. Hubby talked me into laptop, phone, etc… now… indispensable. You’ll adapt and like once you get it. My 83 yr old dad is always on his iphone doing stuff.
@lseeber Doesn’t everyone wash their floors on their hands and knees? I do.
Yeah, I’m just going to have to get used to the idea that I no longer have a landline. I’m really going to miss it.
@Barney Apparently not everyone does still wash their floor that way. If I mention it, they look at me like a dinosaur with 3 heads. We never got rid of our landline until last yr. We were one of the last holdouts around our circles.
@lseeber Yeah, I am a dinosaur in so many ways.
oh and @barney have you bought a case for your g6 yet?
@communist I did buy a case, but I’ve been told I should have one as a backup. Any suggestions?

@communist I’ll order one of each and that will then give me a couple of backups. The prices are certainly right (and so are the colors). Thanks!
@Barney @communist I don’t get why someone would want a backup case. Backup phone - well that I could understand. But backup case? For what?

How to use your smartphone without ruining your health [Popular Science]
@therealjrn I wonder how far I will be able to throw my phone? I’m thinking this was a bad, bad idea.
@Barney To throw it far make a funnelator.
Directions here
https://www.instructables.com/id/how-to-make-a-funnelator/
You can also use that exercise rubberband stuff. Then tie the two ends to two porch supports, trees close enough together, put the phone in the funnel, pull it back and let go. Ought to go at least half a football stadium at least.
We used them on tall ships tied to the shouds to shoot white powdered donuts at other tall ships and aimed soda pop cans into the water near them (although shooting beer and soda pop cans out of the cannon was more fun as when the recipient fished them out of the water and opened them the beverage shot all over the place).
Shooting powered donuts we hit the hull of the Lady Maryland (or maybe it was the Dove can’t remember any more) - it had a black hull so left a nice visible mark - they had wanted donuts so we sent one that way. They were about a football field away from us and anchored (we were anchored too, part of shooting the Puerto Rico film of the discovery of Puerto Rico for the park service outside of Jamestown on the James River). After they yelled at us over the radio we took more over via the tender(dingy). I have always wondered if you could see our antics in the background as they were shooting from shore.
@barney, you know you are going to have to keep a smartphone. Because you will get a case you like to much that you have to have a phone to go with it.
@f00l
@f00l
I should mention that I just googled generic purple phone cases.
These prob don’t fit your particular phone.
@f00l Once I get my smartphone activated, there will be no going back, like it or not.

When is the day that you get the phone?
@RiotDemon Sept. 5, but I’m not sure how the holiday will affect delivery.
I could have had it a lot sooner, but I messed around and waited until just about the last minute to order it. (There was a special on it and it looks like a lot of other people procrastinated along with me.)
Want to know a well know secret? I’m in no hurry to get it.
@Barney @RiotDemon Wait, you’re complaining about a phone you haven’t even gotten yet?
@sammydog01 I’m not complaining. I’m just getting prepared.
@Barney I had no idea!
@RiotDemon Yeah, I do have a pretty good poker face.
@Barney @RiotDemon I ordered a bucket of TidyCat litter a couple of days ago from AMZN. It was delivered today, Sunday, on the holiday weekend by the USPS. God bless Prime shipping.

@f00l Hmph.
@therealjrn I really like Prime. However I think this is coming by FedEx and I don’t care for them too much. I always have trouble with their tracking, and then they never ring the doorbell. Packages should not be left on porches in my neighborhood. Never.
so
how is the honeymoon with your phone going?
@communist I am still a smartphone virgin. -sigh-
I have the phone. The phone is charged, but I haven’t activated it.
I don’t know what is wrong with me. I guess I’m just afraid I’m going to screw things up.
Yep, I’m hopeless.
Edit: I hate change.
@Barney @communist
/giphy you can do it
@Barney I had that same conversation with the guy at McDonalds when they made me order from the kiosk instead of at the counter. I told them if they kept that up I would go to Burger King. ( I hate Burger King.)
@Barney @sammydog01 when they lose their job to the kiosk, they’ll understand why it was a bad idea.
@Barney @communist lol. The very first desktop we ever got, I was deathly afraid to turn it on or off. Afraid I’d break it all.
@communist @lseeber
My very first computer was a child’s OLPC (XO) laptop. (I knew nothing about computers.)
See that character in the center of the screen? It’s an XO avatar. Each person, upon opening their computer, has one, which is made up of two different colors. They are then asked to give their avatar a name. My avatar was two different colors of purple. All I could think of was Barney the Dinosaur, so I named it Barney. I’ve used this name everywhere for the last 10 years.
I guess it’s time for Barney to start on a new learning adventure.

@Barney @communist haha… I’ve never even seen one of those.
@lseeber I saw this feature on CBS’s 60 Minutes and immediately fell in love.
