drunken discord accounts and their usernames
15so apparently i have a discord account from 2016 when it was still in beta.
the problem is, i tried to log in and they have MFA with either an authenticator code or a backup code. i have neither, so i’m not sure what i can do. i tried to change the password, but MFA still kicks in. i guess penis lord carl the merciful will just go the way of the dodos on 3/4/24.
goodbye penis lord carl the merciful. i barely knew ye.

I would say that your current username has an indiscriminator in it instead of what they’re describing. You’ve always been fairly indiscriminate. I don’t see any reason to stop now. OBTW, I got one of those emails, too. I have decided to ignore it. If they cannot tell that my current username does not have the dreaded numeric suffix, then they are not sufficiently diligent in their examination of their usernames to merit my continued participation.
I don’t know why, but for some reason your user name makes me think of “Lord Of the Dance” from Primary school assemblies!
Carl, Carl, wherever you may be
‘I am the lord of the Penis’ said he,
@OnionSoup man… you had some weird primary school assemblies
@carl669 now you know why I am like I am.
/showme “wiener” lord carl the merciful
Not what I was expecting… I knew mediocrebot wouldn’t like “penis” though. I was expecting hot-dogs.
@OnionSoup Now I’ve fallen in love with a regal wiener dog who only exists virtually.
I am confused: they are saying they DON’T want user names like Carl13246, correct? So is your user name not unique? Is there a penis lord carl the merciful1 (and penis lord carl the merciful442)? And therefore how exactly will they change it if you can’t log in, will you become the merciful penis lord carl? Because otherwise they have no way to make thousands of accounts unique unless they do like one of those “name generators” where they have x slots they randomly assign words, which is unique but not meaningful. This all seems a lot of work for a name that already meets the criteria.
Are you sure that you are logging in with the e-mail addy you used to sign up? You might assume that if they sent a message to an e-mail address, that must be the one you used, but not always true. (That one messes me up now and then.) It should only have the MFA if you added it yourself or because the system doesn’t recognize your sign-in e-mail. Or the system is wonky.
Or you are trying to sign in while using a VPN.
@rockblossom it’s definitely the same email address. the forgot password email came through and everything. I just have no way past the MFA
@carl669 If you gave them a phone # when you signed up, they may have sent (or tried to send) a verification code to that number. You can always send a message to their support people at: support@discordapp.com
The world needs its Penis Lord Carl the Merciful to stay alive. And Lordly. And Merciful.
@rockblossom i went through their help/FAQ and basically, if you don’t have your backup codes (which didn’t exist in 2016), and haven’t connected an authenticator app, there’s nothing they can do. they won’t turn off MFA for your account.
it’s possible my acct was hacked as well since i remember using a super weak password at the time.
oh well… i’ve never really used that account anyway, so no big loss.
@carl669 @rockblossom could always let it go and try an reregister with it. Although… Now we all know when it may be up for grabs lol.
Idk how you expect them to verify it’s you without a fuck count
@rockblossom @unksol meh. i mean, i care about penis lord carl the merciful, but not enough to do anything.
@carl669 @rockblossom @unksol Sounds like you have become penis lord carl the ambivalent.
@macromeh @rockblossom @unksol can’t spell ‘penis lord carl the merciful’ without ‘meh’
@carl669 @macromeh @rockblossom I mean I can. Normally that statement requires the word be intact not distributed letters lol
@macromeh @rockblossom @unksol
i don’t know. take out ‘meh’ and you’d have 'pnis lord carl te erciful
According to my significant other, whose knowledge of discord is greater than mine, the username that you make visible to the rest of the world is not the real username in question. That one only shows up in your settings somewhere, and I was not vouchsafed the arcane knowledge about where it is. I seem to recall that the username I chose for my own discord account, which I have not used since establishing it, was extremely unique. But I suspect that if I were to sign in, and look in the settings deeply enough, I could find out whether my hidden username is one of those discriminatorized ones. However, I really don’t give a rat’s ass. So I’m not going to. So there. PHLTBTBTBT.
@werehatrack Correct. I checked the last message I got from Discord, and it was sent to my e-mail and addressed to my display name and not my actual user name - because they are different. So apparently the great Penis Lord Carl is the display name, and it is the unknown user name that needs to be changed. That explains the reason for the e-mail, but not why Carl can’t sign in or change his password.

I also would assume it’s somehow related to this crap that made news a year ago when they started screwing with the names.

But I don’t use discord. Talking to people is gross. Lol
We ran a team speak/l4d2 server back in 2006. You need audio to be effective but. You need friends not the general din of random assholes
@unksol Pffffft, Team Ventrilo booooiii!
@MrHappypants I mean this was a dual (physical) 3.4 GHz CPU intel server with 6 hot swap 74GB SAS drives in raid. That… may… have been from a dead circuit city… Ventrillo? Please.
Realistically meh. You need voice if you have a crew to play with and want to be effective. We did on l4d2 for a few years. Some payday 2 heists. Etc. Been a long long time since I’ve played multiplayer.
I’m sure discord works well for the social people.
@MrHappypants you would think there would be some meh gaining groups just. Statisticly
@unksol That does surprise me, I still run plenty of the same types of games I used to, with new people. I’ve even fired up L4D2 once in a moon!
I do appreciate that free time is a bigger factor, with families & other responsibilities we didn’t used to have, but again-at least a few nights a week I’m mixin’ it up.
On the email I got this week, they used my display name. My user name does have numbers which I had to change.
