Driving Game (Part 73)
5Welcome to the Meh Forum Driving Game!
—
Basic Rules
Connect a new song to the previously played song by name, musician, musical group, or concept. Try to use the format “Artist - Song Title” when possible. Avoid repeats, and do not make two plays back to back.
To avoid repeating past songs, it’s best to always do a quick search of the current thread as well as checking in the official Driving Game Cheat Sheet before making your play.

Natalie Merchant - Wonder
Natalie Imbruglia - Torn
@PHRoG Surprised this has taken so long to get played!
@Kyeh right!?! I couldn’t believe it wasn’t in the list…same with Journey above.
@PHRoG Yes - even more surprised about the Journey song!

Billie Eilish - Ocean Eyes
Boards of Canada - Tears From the Compound Eye
@weasels
Welcome to the playground… you beat my submission by seconds! Well Played!!
@chienfou
Thanks for playing nice! When I saw your submission come up, I was about to delete mine…
@weasels
no problem… yours was posted above mine so you beat me fair and square! Hang around and
race me some morepost some more songs!Third Eye Blind - If There Ever Was A Time
Tool - Third Eye
Andy Grammer - Fresh Eyes
@Kyeh
looks like you lucked out!
@chienfou Beat you by 2 minutes, at least!
@Kyeh
yep. But I meant STS’s post. If they had linked “time” instead of ‘eyes’ you would have been left hanging out there!
@Kyeh
corrected my post above yours. I meant to say time, not tool.
(I also assumed you had linked to my post, not STS’s since the time stamps were virtually identical)
@chienfou Haha - got it, and deleted my response. And you’re right, I linked to yours.
Andy Griffith - Down In The Valley
Andy Bell - Electric Blue
Deadlock - To Where The Skies Are Blue
John Boulter - Blue, Blue, My World Is Blue

“Weird Al” Yankovic - Fat
@PHRoG That’s kind of a stretch…!?
@Kyeh Meh…with all the cookies, felt it worked for complex connection, lol
Could do “Eat It” instead I suppose?
Or, am I doing it wrong?
@Kyeh @PHRoG
covered it with the next one… a “double” at that (one from each )
@chienfou @PHRoG Touché!!!
@PHRoG Not really wrong - I’ve seen more obscure connections! I’m just being picky, probably. But our @chienfou saved the day!
@Kyeh @PHRoG We’ve gotten collectively less imaginative and more literal over the year (good lord it’s been a year) we’ve been doing this. I’m sure we’re all still very imaginative in other contexts, but here it’s THERE HAVE GOT TO BE MORE COOKIE SONG TITLES, DAMN IT.
@PHRoG @mossygreen You think I’m being too restrictive here? It’s gone back and forth with people being creative and others getting mad and retaliating and going totally obscure.
@Kyeh @PHRoG Not at all! At this moment, we seem to be more towards the literal connection/preferably obscure song swing of the pendulum, but you’re right, we’ve had everything. I’ve just spent the evening wondering if there’s a song about Lorna Doones, and, if so, when I will have the opportunity to post it.
@Kyeh @mossygreen @PHRoG
I’m OK with sketchy/stretchy connections if
a) the play seems stuck for a while on a song with very limited options
b) you just go ahead and post the connection right up front. That gives everyone a chance to see how you made the leap…
Fats Domino - Blueberry Hill
Bacon Fat - Juicy
@steeltoesenator
could you put the rest of the title up please?
@chienfou it won’t let me edit on my phone. Bacon Fat (Feat Rod Piazza) - Juicy
@steeltoesenator
Thanks
@steeltoesenator
Had the great pleasure of seeing Rod Piazza (along with Sunpie Barnes) at the Alex City Jazz Fest in 2002. Damn… that was 20 years ago!
@chienfou @steeltoesenator I keep wanting to read it as Rod Pizza.
@chienfou we would go see him and Bacon Fat play at a little dive bar outside of Riverside CA back in the early 70’s. Damn, that was more than 50 years ago! Fun times.
/youtube brian eno - the fat lady of limbourg
the Viceroys - Bacon Fat
Rhett & Link - Rub Some Bacon on It
Can’t believe I got a Rhett & Link one in here.
@PHRoG
almost posted this a few songs back but wasn’t sure it would be accepted as a ‘song’. I do love this bit though…
@chienfou if I gotta listen to my kiddo blast it throughout the house on repeat while dancing to it…it counts!
@chienfou @PHRoG Did you listen to this one? https://meh.com/forum/topics/driving-game-part-73#641cd0ee654a1d2d10894b76
@chienfou @Kyeh I did!
Odetta - Sometimes I feel Like a Motherless Child
@chienfou This one is really stretching, don’t you think?
@Kyeh
IDK… Some and sometimes seemed pretty solid to me… But feel free to skip it if you wanna…
@chienfou OH - I didn’t make that connection at all; I was thinking more along the lines of “theme.” Okay. I do like this song, so …
Paul Simon - Mother and Child Reunion
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - Do You Fear For Your Child?
U2 - Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
Sixpence None the Richer - Kiss Me
ZZ Top - I Got the Six
Jonathan Coulton - First of May
/youtube Bruce Springsteen - Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out
@ExtraMedium speaking of freeze-outs, would you mind making us a new thread for the weekend please? This one’s getting pretty glacial.
@Kyeh tryin to figure out the connection on this one.
/giphy head scratcher
@PHRoG Numbers …You went from STS’s “Six” to “First,” right? Or was there some other connection I’m missing? So I went from “First” to “Tenth.”
@Kyeh hahahaha, didn’t even pick up on that!
But, actually, no…intent of my connection was they were both about sexy times.
@PHRoG OHHH … see, now that I would have questioned, because theoretically, the game is supposed to be something you could play on a long car trip, where there’s not really a way to look up the song or google it, etc (although nowadays people DO do all that in cars too, of course.) But the connection is supposed to be more about the words in the artist-title listing than the content of the song. Or so I thought. @ExtraMedium set up the game up so I defer to his opinion on all of it!
@ExtraMedium @Kyeh yeah, I’d def be interested in better understanding…I figured it was covered under connection concepts in the rules. But, I’m just hopping on this train as of this thread so I may very well (likely) have no clue what I’m doing here, lol!
@Kyeh @PHRoG I try not to be picky. I just like that people are playing and enjoying it. Knowing the hidden meaning of a song isn’t always something you’d have to look up. I mean, I would have needed google for that info, but if the person making the connection didn’t need it then they just know more about those tracks than I do. I’m sure I have plenty of obscure info that links things without google but I also know I’ll have to provide that information to others if I plan on playing them. Something fun off the top of my head would be linking Eric Clapton’s Layla to any George Harrison song because Clapton’s song is about Harrison’s ex-wife who went on to marry Clapton. Wouldn’t expect everyone to make that connection but it does cleanly connect the two artists as far as I’m concerned.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@ExtraMedium @PHRoG Yeah … I think the idea is that people shouldn’t have to listen to the song or look it up to get the connection, and if it’s not really clear there should be an explanatory note. It’s been cool to find new songs through this, though - I don’t listen to all or even most of them, but I have had my eyes (ears?) opened to some great stuff.
Edit: Oh! I posted this without having seen EM’s response; but basically I agree with what he said.
@ExtraMedium @Kyeh thanks for the clarification…that’s what happened here.
Never actually heard ZZ Top’s “I got the Six” (at least recall hearing it). But, listening to it, it’s pretty darn clear what it’s about. (I got the six, you bring the nine…cough) and so one comedic songwriter we listen to often (Jonathan Coulton) came to mind with his song First of May. No Google needed.
However, I do, now, see in the rules when doing this, it should be explained…which, I failed to do. I’ll make sure to do that going forward though!
@ExtraMedium @Kyeh @PHRoG I’m just grateful for this game as I’m currently doing smoking cessation and this is a great distraction from those annoying yet very real nicotine urges. I’m glad y’all put up with me. Added plus is I’ve been able to make some very interesting playlists from here.
@Kyeh " I think the idea is that people shouldn’t have to listen to the song…to get the connection"
Oh noes…I’m even moar confused now. I’ve been listening to ones I didn’t already know before thinking of connections.
@PHRoG Well, I meant they shouldn’t have to, but more power to you for doing so!
@ExtraMedium @PHRoG @steeltoesenator
Wow, good for you! You sure have a wide range of musical knowledge - are you a musician yourself?
@ExtraMedium @Kyeh @PHRoG No, just lived enough years and some of those with musicians to pick up on some things. And yes, quitting smoking is by far harder than I anticipated.
@ExtraMedium @PHRoG @steeltoesenator
An ex-smoker friend told me it’s supposedly harder than quitting heroin. Good luck!
@ExtraMedium @Kyeh @PHRoG @steeltoesenator
In fact, if you look at just the cheat sheet listings it should be obvious how each song is linked to the preceding…
@chienfou @ExtraMedium @Kyeh @steeltoesenator well, yeah, of course…however, since I’m now just joining the game I did read the rules to understand it and there are more difficult ways to links songs (complex connections and concept connections). I do enjoy that kinda stuff and that’s what I was going for here.
@ExtraMedium @Kyeh @PHRoG @steeltoesenator
That’s fine. But remember we are not all in the same wheelhouse. Please try to spell out the connection when you post non obvious links so folks can see where you are coming from (and going!)
A good example of that was last game when someone used Yum brands as a link between 2 songs. Most people are not aware of what that represents so it helps if you connect to the dots.
Having to make these faster and faster. Moving on to Part 74.
@ExtraMedium Thanks. Lots of new people joining in!
@ExtraMedium @Kyeh
yep… this one only made it for 36 hours!
