Driving Game (Part 47)
4If you’re new to the Driving Game, you can just look back at the start of it all here in Part 1 for the full rules.
Please consider the kind folks who maintain our cheat sheet and add your post in the format of “Artist Name - Song Name” followed by a link to the song on the next line. That way they all look the same and it’s easier on the Cheat Sheet team when it’s time to update that list.
Speaking of the Cheat Sheet… The full history of our game, with links to each of the past threads, can be found on the Driving Game Cheat Sheet. Use that to avoid getting vetoed by a duplicate.
Have fun!

Picking up from:
Shakira - Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)
The Zombies - Time Of The Season
Aerosmith - Seasons of Wither
Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time
@chienfou One of my favorite songs, but @januarymick just edged ahead of you. I found a bridge, though!
@januarymick @Kyeh
guess I missed it when I posted it (both within a minute of each other). Oh Well, Guess I’ll save it for another time (after time).
@chienfou But I bridged it, so it’s fixed!
@Kyeh
Thanks
/youtube Seasons After - Weathered & Worn
Jimmy Buffett - The Weather Is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful
Joe Cocker - You Are So Beautiful
Cheat Sheet now UTD thru game 46
@chienfou a thankless job
@chienfou @Yoda_Daenerys I sure hope he knows by now how much we appreciate his dedication! (Esp those of us who are senile & can’t even remember what we had for breakfast most of the time! )
@ircon96 @Yoda_Daenerys
YW verily!
Pulp - Common People
The link is Pulp singer, Jarvis Cocker. The band formed in the late '70s and didn’t find real fame until the mid-90s. Glad they stuck with it though.
@ExtraMedium
Okay, I’ll bite… What’s the commonality?
Edit:
(You posted during my writing this…)
Kind of a stretch I think…
Or maybe, just out of my wheelhouse…
@chienfou @ExtraMedium i guess when you are the creator of the game, you can stretch the rules.
@chienfou @ExtraMedium @Yoda_Daenerys I’m all for the obscure links, not only am i guilty of them myself, but i often learn a lot from the explanations, so it’s a bonus!
@chienfou @ircon96 @Yoda_Daenerys I don’t feel like two musicians having the same name is too far of a stretch. Hiding the link behind the band name (and degrees of fame) is the only part that throws people. If it had been Eddie Money followed by Van Halen I doubt many people would have struggled to link Eddie Van Halen.
But I’m not 100% invested in being right. I gave you guys the game and it’s become as much yours as mine. I’m willing to accept a veto when it’s kicked out. I’m just glad folks are still playing and enjoying the game (most anyway).
@chienfou @ExtraMedium @Yoda_Daenerys I think highlighting lesser-known artists makes things more interesting, I’ve discovered lots of new music in the process. Not to mention, when an opportunity presents itself in this game, sometimes you just need to grab it! After all, who knows when it’ll come up again?
@ExtraMedium @ircon96 @Yoda_Daenerys
Wasn’t trying to shut it down, just genuinely perplexed since I am not familiar with Pulp (though they seem to be a big deal nonetheless).
That’s why I linked to your post, not the one above it.
EDIT… oh wait, that would have been me following myself, another no-no.
@ExtraMedium i was just pretending to be a dick, i’m not really
(please don’t fact check me on that, esp. with my wife or kids)
i love the game, learning as i listen - thanks for creating it.
@Yoda_Daenerys Don’t have a cow, man!
Barbara Streisand - People
The Beach Boys - Barbara Ann
Don Henley - Boys Of Summer
Love this song…
@chienfou Me, too! It came out during my freshman year of high school & it was one of the songs i played on repeat!
@chienfou @ircon96
Good memories of times with that song! I had just graduated in 83!
@chienfou @Lynnerizer Gen X in the house!
/youtube Seals & Crofts - Summer Breeze
/youtube beach boys all summer long
@Yoda_Daenerys Shout out to the marimba!
@ircon96 how is that different than a xylophone?
i watched a brian wilson documentary recently, pretty all right.
@Yoda_Daenerys I’ve always preferred the marimba, it has a warmer, fuller sound to me & has a larger range, so it can go deeper. The xylophone covers the higher range, so it’s brighter & more piercing. They both have their place, but i usually find the marimba more evocative, i guess.
Was that doc “Long Promised Road”? That was great, he’s a fascinating guy. The biopic “Love & Mercy” was great, too, i highly recommend both, esp to fans of his, or music in general.
Janis Joplin - Summertime
/youtube springsteen summertime blues 1978
@Yoda_Daenerys What a catalog… Is there a song he HASN’T covered? I guess when you’re known for playing 4-hour concerts, you need to dig deep!
@ircon96 you may know, he just released an album of covers
@Yoda_Daenerys I had heard he was coming out with a new album, but i didn’t know it was all soul covers! I LOVE soul, I’ll have to check it out… Thanks for the heads up!
@ircon96 yup, he pre-released a few videos of the songs too, you can find them on youtube. safe bet some of them will start showing up here
@Yoda_Daenerys Yep, You Tube is my go-to, i already checked out a couple, really good! I have no doubt they’ll be popping up, can’t wait!
The Flaming Lips - Can’t Stop the Spring
springsteen who’ll stop the rain
guess the link to start at 3:07 isn’t picked up
The Avett Brothers - A Father’s First Spring
Beautiful song, and I’m focusing on spring cuz I’m in denial that winter is almost here. It snowed a little overnight here & i just can’t deal.
@ircon96 rain -> first spring, is that the connection here?
@ircon96 @Yoda_Daenerys I’d guess Springsteen -> Spring
@ExtraMedium @Yoda_Daenerys Yep, Extra got it. Bruce puts the spring in Springsteen… In this case, anyway!
/youtube Sarah Vaughan - Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most
@Kyeh Omg, i was planning on posting the Ella Fitzgerald version of this the next chance i got! Get outta my head! Lol… Bette Midler did a good cover, too.
@ircon96 I like both of them too, but Sarah Vaughn just has that something special in her voice!
@Kyeh I can see why you prefer it (in addition to her voice), being a fan of musicals, it’s very orchestral & airy. I think what i like about Ella’s arrangement is it’s more of a low-key piano ballad, which really captures the mood of the lyrics… And MY mood, now that winter is coming! Lol
@ircon96 I love Ella too and I chose Sarah mainly because Ella’s been posted more, but you’re probably right that her arrangement fits the mood of the song more closely.
Speaking of winter we’re in a real cold snap with snow right now.
Matchbox Twenty - Hang
/youtube rob thomas smooth
@Yoda_Daenerys
See… this one I know!
B.J. Thomas - (Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song
Lotsa words to choose from!
Blondie - One Way or Another

Queen - Another One Bites the Dust
/youtube annie lennox david bowie under pressure
@Yoda_Daenerys
OK, enlighten us…
@chienfou @Yoda_Daenerys
I found this (I had no clue either)
https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/david-bowie-queen-freddie-mercury-under-pressure-story-1981/
@llangley @Yoda_Daenerys
TIL
@chienfou it’s a queen song
and here i thought that connection was obvious.
i hope you watched it, they are amazing, me thinks…
@chienfou @llangley @Yoda_Daenerys You got away with this one, there have been 2 versions posted previously, the one with Annie Lennox back in Part 22. But i can never get enough of this song, so I’m good with it!
@chienfou @ircon96 @llangley well it is a different youtube link, if that helps get me out of jail
but, yea, i didn’t check for dupes on this one, admittedly.
@chienfou @llangley @Yoda_Daenerys Can you imagine Driving Game jail? They must force you to listen to nothing but Muzak at full volume!
David Crosby - Music Is Love
@chienfou ok, I’m missing the link here
@chienfou oh nvm, david…
@Yoda_Daenerys Everyone is thinking all the links are secret or subtle so the obvious is overlooked. I’m here for it. I brought a whole bag of popcorn for the show.
@ExtraMedium @Yoda_Daenerys Artist name is one of the things i miss most often, especially when it’s the first name. You’d think I’d learn, eventually, but nope.
Daft Punk - Give Life Back to Music
/youtube springsteen backstreets
/youtube Dwight Yoakam & Buck Owens - Streets of Bakersfield
@Kyeh Buck Owens! RIP, buckaroo!
@ircon96 And Dwight in his skin-tight jeans - I could watch him dance around all day!
Bruce Springsteen - Streets of Philadelphia
Elton John - Philadelphia Freedom
George Michael - Freedom!
/youtube springsteen freedom cadence
Sia - Bird Set Free
@ircon96 So I love strange little synchronicities, and they seem to happen to me often. Earlier I was reading a comment from PoolToyWolf and watching wolves in a PBS show about Lapland, and just now I’m watching this gorgeous Earthflight program. It showed a guy helping a chick break through its eggshell, and simultaneously, I’m scrolling here and seeing this song!
/youtube andrew bird this must be the place
Andrew and Julian Lloyd Webber - Variations
pretty sure this hasn’t been listed before!
/youtube Julian Lennon - Day After Day
Green Day - Welcome to Paradise
/youtube Phil Collins - Another Day In Paradise
Paul McCartney - Another Day
Chaos U.K. - Another Punk Rock Day
AC/DC - For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)
Moving to Part 48 so I don’t have to make it over the weekend.
