Dog abuse?
9Recently came across pics of competitive dog grooming. Maybe I'm living under a rock but when I googled competitive dog grooming I was semi-shocked by the results. It's a mix of amazing and highly questionable creations.
Here are few
Is this some passive form of dog abuse or maybe dogs enjoy this process? I guess I just don't get this.
Anyone out there excited about competitive grooming that can fill me in on the appeal?

All those dogs look super happy.
I would go abuse. I mean look at what competitive grooming did to Honey Boo Boo.
@connorbush eeesh, that reference is scary
@denboy
@connorbush Krang? Is that you?
@djslack sometimes. TMNT for life.
My son's dog suffers far worse abuse. He makes him wear a Jacksonville Jaguar's dog jersey.
@Teripie
@Teripie That is abuse and you should be reported. NO ONE should have to wear a Jaguars jersey, especially a helpless animal - SHAME!
@Teripie It could be worse. He could alternate with a Jacksonville Armada FC jersey.
@Teripie
I didn't know this existed. Although I have to say I do kind of like this one, well except the awkward hand print on the ass.
@MrMark That hand print is Native American in nature but I have no clue what exactly it signifies. Great transformation of that dog though, I would actually walk around my neighborhood with that guy.
@MrMark Instead of handprint needs Bills logo
Well, dogs love attention so there's that. Thanks so much for the thread- I laughed my head off.
Eh. Most dogs seem to more or less like being groomed, and presumably the ones that don't enjoy it wouldn't be selected for this kind of thing. What really makes dogs happy is human attention, and I'm sure these dogs get more than most. People neglecting dogs is a far more serious and widespread problem.
@Starblind So you're saying being overzealous with attention is much better than not engaged.....or even worse. Good point. That's the exact reason I didn't get a dog while single and traveling a lot for business.
@Starblind @denboy yeah, I have heard that negative attention is preferred over no attention: hence children with attention seeking negative behaviors. My ex-wife, for example, Instead of ignoring her, we used to do the whole domestic violence thing. I mean, negative attention>no attention. Ya feel me?
@connorbush zomg I can't belevie you just.... Oh yeah, it's meh, not woot. Good on you for giving your wife the attention she "needs".
@denboy Same reason I don't have a dog. I know the attention a dog needs and deserves, and right now I don't want to make that commitment.
@jqubed Good call. On the flip side they are great for meeting other singles and my friends with them would go to parks and dog parks, instant conversation starter.
I guess though, at the end of the day, all said and done, when push comes to shove, when the dust settles, if these people aren't dicks to their dogs and the dogs are healthy/happy...all is kosher and quiet on the western front.
@connorbush All quiet on the western front was one of the few books i read cover to cover in high school, riveting stuff.
@denboy admirable choice.
My dogs would disown me if I did that to them.
No one would ever do that to a cat. would they ?
@ceagee the cats look way more badass I wanna make pokemon
@connorbush
@ceagee The bottom one is kinda cool in a Tim Burton / Dr Suess way, but the lion one is incredibly goofy:
"I want my cat to look like a lion, can you make that happen?"
"You mean cut its hair like a lion's mane? It's a little unconventional, but I could do that."
"No, I want a whole second face on the cat, with a mane around it. Oh, and it has to be on the cat's ass."
"A second face... on its ass. Are you sure that's what you want?"
"Yes. That's how it was in my heavily-medicated fever dream, and that's how I want it. I also want the cat to hover and talk in a voice like Sean Connery."
@Starblind I was just kind of reading along until I got to "hover and talk in a voice like Sean Connery." That did it.
@ceagee
That being said, I think it must be humiliating for the animals. How can they ever face their fellow creatures? I vote abuse (kind of).
@KDemo yeah, can't get much street cred with that look
I'm generally opposed to all of this stuff.
Though I can see the case that others are making about attention and grooming, so I'll refrain from being all judgey. But I would add that if the process is uncomfortable to the creature and you're doing it merely for your amusement, you're an asshole. Okay, I was still a little judgey, but almost everyone is an asshole sometimes, if that's any consolation.
And my brother lives in northern Montana and has poodles. He clothes them for their own protection. So there's that. I would never want an animal that requires clothing to stay warm.
But the whole kids' pageant thing is genuinely sick.
@joelmw
I don't think the grooming is abuse per se, but I don't think show dogs|cats are pets in the traditional sense. If your animal has fancy pants heritage and papers and stuff, and you are grooming them for competition, then they are likely insured and treated differently than a dog you just hang out with like a buddy.
I find things like docking of dog tails, de-clawing cats, or dubbing poultry to be a little more dubious than a fur-costume (generally).
@metageist dubbing poultry ? who does the voice overs ?
@ceagee
@ceagee Cluck Kent?
@ceagee I don't know if this counts as chicken voice overs or chicken dubstep.
We had one of our cats shaved this year. He loves to be outside (back yard only, fence is modified to keep the cats in our yard) and he's a Himalayan with long thick fur.
With temps as high as they can be in the summer (last weekend was brutal, record highs on more than one day), the shaving is the best way to deal with the heavy coated fur.
@lisaviolet and now you have new ideas for next summers shave : )
@lisaviolet My childhood Piano teacher told me about the time when she was a kid and it was a super hot summer she and her sibling shaved the cat.......... Cat stayed cool alright, he hid under the deck till it regrew
@ceagee Yeah, we really liked the dinosaur one, but I don't think the vet's office can do that one. Just a quasi lion cut (not much of a mane...)
@Foxborn The first cat we ever did was Benny. He'd go outside, stay there and I'd find him just laying there panting. I'd wet him down, bring him inside and an hour later he'd be back outside. Panting.
So, he was the first to get shaved and he was a changed cat. He loved it. He rocked it. And they did a great mane...(this was back in 2003).
Then Rocky was done in June. It took him a little to get used to it, but he decided it was a good thing.
Here's a video I took of Rocky. It's so long because I wanted Rocky's previous owner to see how well he's doing here. Her daughter contacted me last year to ask if I could help place her mom's cat. Her mom (who was 88) and dad moved in when her dad was terminal and needed hospice; her mom couldn't take care of him by herself, really bad, crippling arthritis. She brought her cat and the landlord told her daughter (who was two months into a year lease) to get rid of the cat. We took the kitty with the understanding that if they moved to a place where her mom could have the cat, she could have him back. He's still here. This is his forever home.
His previous owner cried when she watched it. She's happy that he's found a great place to live out his life.
@lisaviolet SO CUTE!!!!
@lisaviolet Rocky is a beautiful kitty and very lucky to have such caring and loving humans.
@beachbum Thank you. He's a great cat, I'm sad he didn't get to stay with his previous owner.
@lisaviolet Opportunity missed to give Rocky purple leopard spots?
The title of this thread does NOT mention cats.
WTF?
Effing cat people always have to ruin things.
@beergut Cats are assholes. Cat people are much, much worse.
@beergut Agreed. The cat people need to leave.
Not just here - EVERYWHERE.
Go. Just go. And take your damn cat pictures with you.
@pepsiwine @OldCatLady @beergut
Cat people are people, too.
@pepsiwine No.
@Thumperchick
I see your grumpy cat gif and raise you 3 adorable weiners:
@beergut oh no! Did a cat steal your lunch? Monopolize your best friend's time? Cause a painful breakup? There are people who can help you work through the pain, buddy. People who care.
@pepsiwine @OldCatLady @beergut
@beergut We cats are not listening.
@beergut Sad cats are sad for you and your hate.
@OldCatLady
@ceagee @christinewas @lisaviolet @Thumperchick @pepsiwine @OldCatLady @beergut

(If you need help with the tune. The meter should match. You can sing along if you like.)
@pepsiwine If I'm totally honest, I like cats better than I do little dogs. ;-p
@joelmw There is a special place in Hell for people who inflict earworms on others. You are so there.
@joelmw hahahaha! I LOVE it! I might be singing it all day.
@joelmw
Just kidding, well done.
@joelmw
@joelmw Actually that was quite clever (well done) and it showed that you have way too much time on your hands. I can help you with that. Come on by and bring your own work gloves. If you are picky and want to bring your own tools feel free, but I have pretty much everything here. It might be a good idea to stop and pick up some fresh paint rollers on your way.
Has anybody seen a dog dyed dark green.
About two inches tall, with a strawberry blonde fall;
Sunglasses and a bonnet
and designer jeans with appliques on it?
The dog that brought me so much joy
Left me wallowing in pain.
Quiche Lorraine.
It's a haircut. It will grow back.
@lowerone What if they sedate them for the grooming process? Is that ok?
@Teripie Why does dog 1 have to wear the Jags jersey but dog 2 doesn't? Is it punishment? Because you're right, that is abuse.
@OldCatLady Patches is just serving as a model. The other dog is dark brindle and the jersey doesn't show up as well. It really belongs to my son's dog.
@Teripie Since the dogs don't have a choice of teams, we can give them a pass. Humans, not so much.
@Teripie Jax? I'm just a little north of there. (waves) Howdy, neighbor!
@PocketBrain Just now saw this. I'm over here in Panama City. My sister is in Live Oak and goes to Jax frequently.
This is my favorite dog cut.
