Does it look like I'm selling shirts?!
18Well, I guess I did.
Waiting in line at Costco, the guy behind me commented on the shirt I was wearing, and then asked where I got it from. "TeeTurtle." Nothing unusal, but this guy was a lot more serious, it seems, as he instantly pulled up his phone to look for it.
"Do you remember the name?"
"Bananana."
"You know if they still have any?"
"Not likely. It was discontinued over a year and a half ago."
"Damn."
A moment later ...
"How much you want for it?"
I said "What?"
"I'll buy it off you right now. $20 sound fair?"
"Done. I have a change of clothing in my truck."
A little more small talk afterwards, like how his he used to call bananas "bananananas" and his son does too, hence his keen interest in buying it.
TL,DR: I sold my used @walmazan Bananana shirt to a complete stranger for more than I paid 22 months ago.
On that note ... when are you starting up a new shirt site, @snapster?

So I guess that means there are people out there, wandering around, buying the clothes off people's backs. Should I carry a change of clothes in my car at all times?
@Teripie I keep a change a clothes because while it's almost "beach bum" casual at the office, it's not if I'm out and about for business. Catshirt.woot doesn't exactly scream professional, y'know.
Does shirt.woot not have on demand printing yet. Thought that was up and running although I have not cared to look in ages.
@tomdoe Shirt.woot does have on demand printing, it's called the catalog.
@Thumperchick that is what I was thinking....so not so out of print right?
@tomdoe Greasy Grasp of God! A favorite!
@tomdoe actually, the shirt @narfcake is talking about is from a different site, teeturtle. If you click the link he put in his post, it will take you to that site.
@Thumperchick Sorry, I really should learn to read....
@tomdoe No worries. And while it's out of print at TeeTurtle, it's been reoffered at TeeFury, though not with glow-in-the-dark ink and on blanks that are nowhere near as soft as TT's.
Oh great. We will soon have a shirt.meh site. Then later:
Can't wait. It will be wonderful!
@cengland0 Well, at least we will have someone to blame.
@cengland0 Did you mean "whine.meh"?
@cengland0 There would be too much competition. Why not go for the opposite of each category? notepands.meh, analog.meh, homeless.meh, rocks.meh, couch.meh...
@Kevin I like the idea of homeless.meh would that sell superior refurbished cardboard boxes?
@Kevin Sure!, though I can say that a (potential) shirt.meh will already be the opposite of shirt.woot, since they're not exactly using t-shirts anymore; rather, it's some wide-neck-armpit-pinching-shrinky-dink-something-something-something-of-cotton-purporting-to-be-a-shirt for their regular offerings.
@cengland0 And for the truly mehtacular offerings, meh.meh.
@cengland0 you are safe for the time being. we don't plan any dot.mehs. we might do other sites but there's something essential to us about leaving the classic model clean now. Not to say there's a ton of difference but less in your face perhaps.
@cengland0 Don't forget Amazon.buyout.meh
@wisenekt Lunch octopus?
@cengland0 you forgot fukucannotbuyduetoservercrash.meh
I have an original Return of the Living Dead shirt with the punk zombies that I use to wear in my punk days. I had offers from $50-100 for that shirt, but I never sold it.
I still have it hanging in my closet.
@The_Baron You hang your shirts in your closet?
@Bingo That should be on a t-shirt.
@Bingo I hang up all my shirts. Easier to access and no wrinkling.
@The_Baron I did this when I had a big closet. I just had some baskets for socks, underwear, etc and everything else was hung (heh) but I moved into a hundred year old house and it has teeeny closets so I have had to start using a dresser again. I hate it!
@chellemonkey My house is over a hundred years old and has tiny closets like that, except for my room. Benifits of non-standard architecture, my closet doubles as an office with a window. Two racks for my cloths and the rest (pants, undies, socks, etc.) go in my dresser. This was the total opposite to my first apartment in Boston, a tiny studio with one hall closet.
Everyone I know is hoping snapster will open another shirt site. It's sad how badly that was ruined as well. I would think if a new shirt site were to pop up in this neighborhood there would be plenty designers and customers interested.
@LadyLeela Indeed. To the artists, I will say that Woot has the best payout; an exclusive contract pays $1k and $2/sale after the debut day. To the consumer ... bleh.
The way I can picture a new shirt site: non-exclusive contracts to the artists for a sale of a week or less, print afterwards on good blanks to minimize overproduction, and shipped out within the week after so it'll arrive within a month even by SnailPost. I dunno - would that work, @snapster?
@narfcake they first should focus on meh. If they start a shirt business now they really have to start from scratch. When shirt.woot opened they already had a million unique visitors. Meh could really use some sort of viral event to attract more attention.
@Kevin "double rainbow ... meh" "three meh moon"
@Kevin How about some basic search engine optimization? If I search Daily Deals in google, Meh doesn't even show up in the first three pages.
@Kevin The way I see it, it'd be a separate entity and all be from scratch anyway, since I see meh staying meh. But this is a time to seize an opportunity, just as Ramy did starting TeeTurtle a week after they announced the switch to Anvils. Last I know, Threadless paid as little as 0.25/sale, creating artist flight. Shirt.woot - too many unhappy customers and (lack of) CS making matters worse. GoodJoe :( and KYSO, gone. Design by Humans acts as a print-on-demand site now. TeeFury, Shirt Punch, TheYetee, RipT, etc. almost exclusively caters to pop-culture.
@narfcake looks like you know your shirt. From your comment it seems like there's some good opportunity. A few of those guys already have a good idea of how to run a shirt business.
Silly idea: instead of just shirt designs, why not sell shorts/pants with the shirt? I've got too many shirts. It'd be a wardrobe site. The pants could match the shirt.
@Kevin Considering how varied everyone is, no on shirts/pants.
@narfcake I think woot's payout policy is pretty good. TGentry probably made a million off of them. I feel like he had a derby winner almost every week for a while there.
@jsh139 He printed a lot, but nowhere close to a million. James Cho printed a lot back then too, but nowhere near that either.
For highest earnings, it'd be between Patrick Spens (number of times printed) and RamyB (volume). One aspect all 4 have in common - they did NOT advertise their derby designs pandering for votes.
@narfcake whoa! His name is Patrick Spens?? I always thought it was "patrick's pen"
@chellemonkey Common misconception, since "Patrick's Pens" works just the same. Here's his outdated blog.
@chellemonkey I always assumed that he forgot an 'i' in his username.
@jsh139 Be nice, now; this isn't grade school.
@narfcake Aw, come on, that was funny ;)
@jsh139 Making fun of someone's surname is funny?

This one?
@shannenelaine @cengland0: OH HELL NO! - That's a SHITTY knockoff/design stolen/etc. :( The @walmazan's originals are these:
MEH.
Ugh now I know about Teeturtle... So many cute T-Shirts which I really don't need...
@Gurkie Sorry. Consider this an early apology from a future scap- ... -er, shirtgoat of the month.
@narfcake I think you would be the shirtgoat of forever really...
@chellemonkey Damn. Also, I don't think I have any shirts with goats on them. Catshirts, OTOH ...
@Gurkie I found a lot of gift-worthy shirts there, but they only go as low as $15 and then charge $6.75 for shipping. I'll check back around Black Friday to see if there are any good coupon codes, but this is a bit out of my range for t-shirts.
@narfcake I think this is a hole in your shirt collection that needs to be filled (most my t-shirts have cats on them)
@darksaber99999 @Gurkie Last year, TT had a store-wide BF sale, followed by 12 days of Christmas. I'm on the mailing list, though I think most folks just follow on FB. Only 432k more likes than shirt.woot! - good thing Ramy doesn't enter in the derbies anymore, since 100 votes is enough to print there these days. :(
I think you need to post a pic of your t-shirt collection so that people on here can get a true idea of just how many you have. I seem to remember you posting a few pics on woot a while ago but I can't find them now. The amount was staggering.
@jsh139 For shirt.woot's 5-year, my count was 501. https://www.flickr.com/photos/wootpics/7610427026/
@narfcake I guess there can be more destructive vices...
@narfcake good grief, if you buy extra underwear and jeans you don't have to do laundry for over a year.
It's going to be ok. You're among friends. @narfcake
@narfcake Very nice. Now I don't feel so bad about my T addiction, but yours is so much better organized.
hey. i heard you were selling shirts. how much? what sizes do you have? are they arm pit stain free?
@carl669 And do they come with the second arm hole for free?
@cengland0 i'm not fancy. one arm hole is just fine.
@carl669 The question is what size I don't have! I used to be MXL, then ML was fine, then MM, but when buying on the secondary market, I can't be choosy, so I have woot shirts from WS to M3XL.
I have tons of beautiful, pristine shirts that I basically keep almost museum quality. The rest of me looks drowned ratty. What shorts I like I keep ages because no one makes decent comfy shorts like Next shirts. Why can't they make shirts with a drawstring out of tee material?
@muumol Like the jersey hoodies? Not quite as soft, but definitely the same weight.
@Mavyn Anything on those stating "not for use as pants"?
@narfcake I'd have to check, since sans-pants is the way to go, it's never been a concern.
@Mavyn Good point. The signs in the stores just say "No Shirt. No Shoes. No Service." They never say anything about "No pants."
@narfcake If your house has one of those signs, you should complain to the landlord.
@Mavyn If my house had one of those signs I think I would complain about the lack of service received because I ALWAYS wear a shirt and shoes
@chellemonkey How do you shower?
@Mavyn No landlord, unless you count the bank. Back on topic, @muumol - try looking up "jersey knit shorts". Can't guarantee you'll find any as soft as the Next Level shirts, though.
@Mavyn
@chellemonkey Showering with a lollipop sounds like a euphemism.
