Does anyone own or have knowledge about the Moto G Plus (5th gen) phone?
2My beloved Google Nexus 5 will no longer be receiving security updates, and it won’t accept software updates past its current Marshmallow 6.0.1. I really can’t afford a new, high end phone like the Galaxy S8, and even if I could afford it I can’t justify the expense, since I use the phone mainly for mail, some web reading, and a few very simple games such as solitaire.
Amazon is currently offering a very good deal on the Moto G Plus (as low as $185 for Prime members), but I don’t want to buy one that will disappointment me.
I know how to interpret some of the descriptions for features and functions, but any info would be greatly appreciated.

I currently own the Moto G5 Plus (4GB/64GB, NOT Amazon and supported). So far, so good, can’t say anything about if the amazon ads are annoying or not.
The thing that looks like a home button is actually a multi-function fingerprint scanner. It can do all three standard button functions (back, home, recent apps) by swiping or tapping. Turned out much better than anticipated.
@KMakato If the ads and such are much like I get on the Kindle, they’re totally acceptable as they’re very unobtrusive and only appear on the lock screen. Thank you for the info about the home button; I can see myself poking it over and over with no movement to the home screen at all. I’m sometimes a slow learner. And I’m encouraged that you’re happy with it. Thanks!
Security updates isn’t much of a reason to upgrade your phone, especially if it’s on 6.x already and you don’t do much with the phone. I only just upgraded from a Samsung Galaxy S3 running CM10.2 (android 4.3), and it was running that for 3 1/2 years.
@KMakato
I have an old S3 sitting in a drawer. I haven’t used it in several years (since I went back to Nexus phones. Still deciding about Pixel).
For fun I upgraded it to the latest LineageOS build (it was on the first build, so it had watermarks on the screen about it being the bridge build from Cyanogenmod to Lineage).
Aha! That’s really good news. Perhaps I’ll rethink the entire idea of a new phone. Thanks again!
@magic_cave no problem. Worse case, if you know someone that can install a new ROM a year down the road, you’ll be able to update that way. Popular phones always tend to have a community of followers supporting phones well after the manufacturer stops.
@KMakato @magic_cave
Especially for a phone like the Nexus 5.
It has a strong following even 4 years later due to it still being one of the greatest (if not the greatest) Nexus phone.
It also has a strong ROM community because:
@PlacidPenguin The Spouse is pretty good with electronics, so I’ll keep this little gem of information handy. He has a Nexus 5 also. Thank you!
@magic_cave Still using my Moto E first gen, so sorry I can’t help. It works great; no need to update imo.
@magic_cave
If you need additional help, there are mehmbers who would glad to help.
@PlacidPenguin Even more great info to hang onto. Thanks!
Keep an eye on google fi they often sell the nexus 5x at a discount ($199.99 + 1 mo so $229 or less) and we should see the first good pixel discounts this holiday cycle
Moto phones generally are pretty good quality for the price point… and lenovo tends too keep the quality pretty level if the ibm laptops are any indication.
@thismyusername
I’m slightly hesitant about recommending the 5X nowadays due to the fact that even newer builds of it have had the bootloop issue.
On the other hand, there’s a class action lawsuit being investigated.
@PlacidPenguin yea I’ve not run across it myself, have you ever seen it happen in RL? Even so 199 for a actual up to date device is a steal… I guess my opinion would be a bit different if I had to deal with warranty… but… not $449 worth of upset I suspect.
that pixel needs to come down.
@thismyusername
No, but that doesn’t mean I’m not even remotely worried about mine.
@thismyusername
On the other hand, getting it through Fi would be better than buying it from a person or even
Amazon/Swappa/eBay.I have the G5 Plus, with Amazon ads. Got the 64 GB because I like to have all my apps on board. I have had no issues in the month I have owned it. Pretty fast in all apps, no freezing issues. I feel like it was a steal at $240
@njack26 That’s exactly the phone I had in mind; I’m not bothered by the Amazon ads, especially since it saves another $70. I really appreciate your information!
