It looks like a begonia. Possibly strawberry saxifrage, but the leaves can change color/pattern as it gets older, so it can surprise you. Of course, it could surprise you by not being a begonia.
@moonhat I’m impressed with the data collection, but not the conclusion… As a botany teacher, I’m going with vining, flowering plant. I like the creeping Charlie guess below
@moonhat On the other hand, if it actually is a Creeping Charlie, it prefers partial shade. Is there any smell at all to the leaves? It might have a faint mint smell.
ETA: If it is creeping charlie, don’t plant it outside. It spreads, and is tough to get rid of, if it likes the location. It’s a pretty good houseplant, though. Hard to kill, and recovers quickly from neglect.
@bleedmichigan@mike808@moonhat now that I see the hairy stems, I would agree with the violet. Nice plant for someone who isn’t the greenest thumb out there. It should spread out and eventually you could divide it if you want to.
Hmm it is a green plant I am not good at this ‘what kind of plant is this’ game. When you bought it didn’t it have a name attached to it? Hmm duh I guess not or you wouldn’t be asking.
@kdemo This is a different species (glechoma hederacea) of creeping charlie than what was proposed above (pilea nummulariifolia). So same common name for different species.
The leaf shape/size is not right for glechoma hederacea.
I love all these answers! You guys are the best. But you know that.
The plant was technically swag leftover from the last employee giving campaign! Or the kit, I guess. I thought I’d give it a shot (it was a little tiny pkt of seeds and those flat dirt pellets you plump up with water).
I sit her (her name is Penny, I have decided) in the window ledge and she seems to like it even though she looks out at a gross dirty downtown bus stop. But I’m pretty thrilled with her progress.
@moonhat I think it doesn’t get enough light. I have grown morning glory seeds inside and they get crazy tall and flimsy while the volunteers in the garden grow nice and sturdy. I’m totally not an expert though.
@CaptAmehrican@mike808@moonhat definitely not forget-me-not, or at least not the ones I have growing all over the place here (Myosotis latifolia) - very different leaves and plant structure.
appears to be creeping Charlie, like others have said.
gets little purple flowers…
a very hardy assertive “weed”… shows up on its own and creeps all over…
I rip it out by the handfuls in my boxed garden in mi.
tis a nuisance plant…
@mick ok yes looking it up I kept seeing “how to get rid of creeping Charlie” but I also saw pics of some nice houseplants…, I hope Penny flowers a bit but continues to grow into a good houseplant
Yes, I’m sure somebody knows.
I’ll put my nickel on some sort of ivy. Just because I like the song.
/youtube song poison ivy
With zero research and only using fuzzy memories of gardens my guess is it’s a melon or cuke.
That poor plant doesn’t know what month it is.
@therealjrn Trader Joes already has the daffodil bunches being sold… as of late Feb… they normally show up in late april.
@therealjrn @thismyusername I have daffodils in my garden. And mud in the back yard. Must be spring.
@sammydog01 @therealjrn @thismyusername my mud just came in!
@sammydog01 @therealjrn @thismyusername @unksol
Daffodils are the first up here. Usually mid-Feb. Daffs often aren’t too bothered by the late dregs of winter.
@f00l yea I see them pop early at times in nature, but it’s weird that TJ’s already has them so early this year…
@sammydog01 @therealjrn @thismyusername @unksol My mud came in the beginning of February, but a cold snap killed it. Got all hard and crunchy.
@sammydog01 @therealjrn @thismyusername my back yard is a swamp, so my legacy crocuses are blooming.
Last year I had just purchased a macro lens so I got down in the mud to take pictures.
I am less inclined to do that this year, even though I had no idea what I was doing last year and could likely do a lot better.
It looks like a begonia. Possibly strawberry saxifrage, but the leaves can change color/pattern as it gets older, so it can surprise you. Of course, it could surprise you by not being a begonia.
Could be a type of clamatis. Looks like a climber.
I would go with some sort of bean, or cucumber as suggested above.
Did you get it down at the market in trade for your family’s cow? If so, be prepared for some fum.
What we can see:
Leaves in pairs.
Leaves on stems
Leaves have a central rib/vein.
Leaves are somewhat heart-shaped, but not pointy.
The flowers will likely narrow it down a bit more. Temps, amount of sun, direct/indirect, or soil conditions might help narrow it further.
Leaf edges are serrated and not smooth.
I’m gonna go with a squash of some kind.
@mike808 dammmmnn I love this. Are you a botany professor?
@moonhat I’m impressed with the data collection, but not the conclusion… As a botany teacher, I’m going with vining, flowering plant. I like the creeping Charlie guess below
@IWUJackson @moonhat
Nah, just basic … science.
With a smidge of high school biology taxonomy labs.
Since we have an actual biology teacher here, how would we test either (or any) of our collective hypothesis to narrow down the genus/species?
What phenotypes should we be looking for to refine them?
More pictures of the leaves and any flowers or scents or texture are likely to help as well.
@mike808 @moonhat also seeds. I’m assuming a dicot

Very nice photos. That first one of the leaf showing the fine structure is super.
Even @bleedmichigan would be envious.
@bleedmichigan @IWUJackson @moonhat
And the magic internet thingamajiggy on Pl@ntNet says:
Garden Violet
https://identify.plantnet.org/species/the-plant-list/Viola odorata L.
@IWUJackson @mike808 @moonhat Mike what am I envious of?
@bleedmichigan @IWUJackson @mike808 he must think you’re jealous of my leaf photography

@moonhat It might be a creeping charlie (as others have said). Here’s an ad from Walmart that has a nice shot of the leaves.
Here’s the details:
@moonhat On the other hand, if it actually is a Creeping Charlie, it prefers partial shade. Is there any smell at all to the leaves? It might have a faint mint smell.
ETA: If it is creeping charlie, don’t plant it outside. It spreads, and is tough to get rid of, if it likes the location. It’s a pretty good houseplant, though. Hard to kill, and recovers quickly from neglect.

Do the leaves smell if you rub them? Are we allowed to ask questions? How many questions are we allowed to ask?
I was thinking bean but couldn’t find any shaped like that.
@sammydog01 has the cat eaten it yet? how quickly did it throw up the green globbies? are you at the vet’s?
@sammydog01 - Good question about scent. Could it be something in the mint family?
@kdemo @sammydog01 Fun fact: all mint relatives have a square stalk.
My first idea was a bean of some sort.
@sammydog01 There is no scent detected whatsoever
Hmm it is a green plant I am not good at this ‘what kind of plant is this’ game. When you bought it didn’t it have a name attached to it? Hmm duh I guess not or you wouldn’t be asking.
This looks close, but not sure of the size of the leaves, they may be smaller than yours.
Creeping Charlie
@kdemo That one does look really similar!! I hope it does flower!
@kdemo @moonhat
@kdemo This is a different species (glechoma hederacea) of creeping charlie than what was proposed above (pilea nummulariifolia). So same common name for different species.
The leaf shape/size is not right for glechoma hederacea.
I’m no farmer, but I think it looks like a potato plant.
@G1 needs a comma…makes me think of THIS
@chienfou @G1 - I believe the comma is not missing in this case. Audrey II was feasting on Seymour.
Kind of a double-entendre.
@G1 @kdemo
/giphy DOH!
Plantsnap says it’s a bleeding heart… I’m not sure I agree…
@chienfou hmmm I wonder!?
It looks like a vining flower not a vegetable not pea nor bean. Sadly I don’t know my flowers as well as my vegetables
I’d say an eggplant, squash, melon and/or pumpkin
I hope it is a flower. Be nice to have a houseplant with pretty blooms.
How did you end up with it?
I love all these answers! You guys are the best. But you know that.
The plant was technically swag leftover from the last employee giving campaign! Or the kit, I guess. I thought I’d give it a shot (it was a little tiny pkt of seeds and those flat dirt pellets you plump up with water).

@moonhat Graphics look like a match here:
https://www.goimprints.com/product/grande-planter-kit-6604672 , but I think the label of basil is photoshopped into the picture
@moonhat Aww! Seeing that I would guess she’s not a vine, just growing leggy since she’s inside. I bet she’s a flower.
@sammydog01 why does a plant grow more leggy if it’s inside? I am learning a lot here.
@moonhat I think it doesn’t get enough light. I have grown morning glory seeds inside and they get crazy tall and flimsy while the volunteers in the garden grow nice and sturdy. I’m totally not an expert though.
@sammydog01 ok, very interesting!
@moonhat @sammydog01 the plants will get leggy inside as get less light so they are stretching trying to get to light
Free is good. Growing and alive is even better! Good job getting this
guygal started. Now on to the ‘nurturing’ stage!Here …
https://www.goimprints.com/product/grande-planter-kit-6604672
the pictures show basil and forget-me-not, but if it was basil you’d have a smell to the leaves (altho they do look like yours), and the leaves you have aren’t FMN, so IDK …
@stolicat thats not basil. Basil doesn’t vine like that.
@CaptAmehrican @stolicat and it definitely doesn’t smell like anything, and I know how wonderful basil smells when growing
@stolicat that is so cool that you found that!
@moonhat google knows everything … maybe King County had some certain seed packet relevant to the area.
@CaptAmehrican @moonhat basil doesn’t have the little hairs in @moonhat’s pictures either.
@CaptAmehrican @moonhat @stolicat
So forget-me-nots? It ties in with the corporate greenwashing/marketing theme.
@CaptAmehrican @mike808 @moonhat definitely not forget-me-not, or at least not the ones I have growing all over the place here (Myosotis latifolia) - very different leaves and plant structure.
@CaptAmehrican @moonhat @stolicat
I think we’re back to Garden Violet, see above.
@CaptAmehrican @mike808 @moonhat yeah, looks pretty close - maybe this one is just a little leggy. Any flower will tell for sure, of course.
appears to be creeping Charlie, like others have said.

@mick @moonhat You have to keep her alive long enough to find out what it is for sure. I NEED TO KNOW!
@mick @sammydog01 Sammy, I will keep you and everyone else here updated FOR sure!!
I thought it was geranium. It was very close to geraniums)
Check out Penny the Plant now! She just looks wonderful!
@moonhat oh she is beautiful. Are we confirmed on what she is?
@moonhat @tinamarie1974
It’s so big!
(obligatory TWSS)
So pretty!
You can use What Is The Plant tool based on AI to identify plants, trees, flowers etc.
@Justinelis82 I was hoping this was an update and not spam.
@Justinelis82 @sammydog01
the really creepy part is they joined then lurked for 2+ weeks before the resurrection.
@sammydog01 No It is not. It’s just my opinion. Being a Botany student, I shared my experience.
@Justinelis82 In that case I apologize.
@Justinelis82 @sammydog01
cool. How in the world did you run across this thread?
BTW welcome to the meh madhouse…
