I can understand why a person might think about this. But if it troubles you, you're not gonna want to think about what happens to all the other mudbugs we didn't buy. Where we got ours, they sell 'em by the pound, and not to people who intend nurturing them through their golden years.
They're illegal to own as a pet in Pennsylvania now. All of them, not just the ones that would survive in the wild. Sigh. If you're going to own a pet, please do so responsibly. Never release an animal into the wild.
@djslack Guess that depends. I had 4-5 different species of them, and thought they were very entertaining, particularly in a group. They're not cuddly, but they are interesting.
@sohmageek It depends on the species, how they're raised, and permitting. Permits for certain uses are available, just not to the hobbyist.
@Mavyn I had some when i was about 13, toward the end of my aquarium owning days They seemed fun for a while, but then killed all the fish, then weren't as much fun by themselves.
Of course around here we'd much rather eat them than watch them.
@djslack There are species that are suitable for keeping with fish, mostly dwarf varieties out of warmer waters. It certainly depends what one expects from them, but I think their behavior is more interesting than the average turtle. I think turtles are cute, but I've never seen them do much that was interesting.
When I was a kid we use to go out to the creek and use pieces of raw chicken and string to catch crawfish. We usually ended up catching about 5 or 6 crawfish per chicken. My parents were not happy.
No
I do. I hope they are in a crayfish retirement home now.
Mmmm... mini lobsters.
@thismyusername never figured out the butter.
No, but I do worry about crayfish wrongs.
@Pavlov I've had a few of those.
@Pavlov Hmph, I worry about crayfish lefts.
If Crawdaddy Restaurant in San Jose ever taught me anything, it's this fine nugget: "You've gotta SUCK THE HEAD!"

@2many2no Best Cajun in KC. But you gotta go to the location across from KU Med. The Chicken and Crab Cakes A La Mer . . . like BUTTER.
Guess I'm not dieting tomorrow.
@Pavlov

@2many2no Bubba Gump's CrawFish Company
Crawfish rights? Yeah, right into the boiling water!
I'm a big Cray Rights advocate.
@PocketBrain They are fast and powerful, but I am against giving rights to supercomputers.

@rockblossom they are about as fast and powerful as a tablet computer nowadays, I'm afraid. http://www.electronista.com/articles/11/05/10/ipad.2.benches.as.fast.as.cray.2.from.1985/ to note: that article is from 2011, two Moore cycles ago.
I think whomever that was in the video may have a drinking problem
@Bingo
@Bingo @denboy
@JonT I'll NEVER get over Macho Grande.

@Mavyn They're fairly crappy pets anyway.
@Mavyn What about farming them as a food source? I have a friend that farms them... Apparently they are very good at getting rid of waste food scraps.

@sohmageek Farming them is very profitable around these parts.

yes. they have the right to be delicious.
Some crayfish have rights... others are just tasty.
